The question has arisen as to whether or not a trooper, who is being attacked through a low vis zone, suffers a -3 to their use of a smoke grenade in ARO assuming the target point of the smoke is not within or crossing the low visibility zone. Essentially some disagreement as to whether the trooper's ARO LoF requirement is being taken from the enemy causing the ARO on the other side of the visibility zone, or the target point of the smoke grenade which does not pass through the low visibility zone.
It's the LOF of the BS Attack that determines vis MODs. So no, it doesn't matter that you're being shot at through a low vis zone.
Why dodge has -mod from Low Vis Zones then? from FAQ: Q: How do the MODs for Low/Poor Visibility Zones apply to Dodge Rolls? And to Engage? A: The MODs apply whenever a Skill, Special Skill or piece of Equipment requires LoF and is declared from, into or through a Low or Poor Visibility Zone. Note that if the trooper is within the Visibility Zone this also applies to Dodge Rolls against template weapons from outside LoF. So: Any Dodge declared inside a Low/Poor Visibility Zone suffers the negative MOD, even in Close Combat or if the Dodge didn’t involve LoF. Any Dodge which LoF to the enemy trooper passes into/out/through a Low/Poor Visibility Zone suffers the penalty. The negative MOD will also apply to the Engage Common Skill.
Smoke grenade is a BS attack, not a dodge. The LOF of the a dodge would be through the Low Vis zone. The LOF of the BS smoke grenade would be to the point where the grenade is being thrown.
Or rather, when you Dodge your target is the enemy trooper. When you shoot a smoke grenade at your feet your target is the ground at your feet. If the LOF is obscured to your target, you suffer the MOD, so if you choose to shoot the smoke grenade into or through the Low Vis Zone, you get a MOD there as well.
Weeeeeell.... It is not only LOF from BS that goes through Low Visibility is important (though it is important too)... After careful reading Low Visibility Zone I can't agree 100% 0_0 The declaration itself goes by LOF through Low Visibility already applies MOD... It reminds me previous discussion about smoke dodge vs impact, when main target for impact is not the guy with smoke. " Any Skill, Special Skill or piece of Equipment that requires LoF and is declared from, into, or through a Low Visibility Zone suffers a -3 MOD to the relevant Attribute in the required Roll. Consequently, any Skill, Special Skill or piece of Equipment whose LoF makes contact with a Low Visibility Zone suffers the -3 MOD. " Smoke dodge Is declared through Low VIsibility Zone, so it fits to first paragraph... Or do I understand first paragraph wrong?
If you read it that way, it only gets -3 in the reactive turn as an ARO. In the Active turn you don't need LOF to any enemy to throw the smoke. That seems wonky to the point of it probably isn't meant to work that way.
Smoke ammunition has a target. That target, thanks to Targetless trait, does not need to be the enemy trooper, but instead can be the ground. LOF for BS Attack is determined to be a straight line between the attacker and the target.
What target Dodge has then? :) I don't think it is only about target? Smoke dodge was declared through Low Visibility Zone... what, according to direct words from first paragraph lead us to minus MODs... No?
Dodge doesn't have a target. The MODs imposed by Low Vis Zones/ Poor Vis Zones happen because the rules say so.
