    Hi All,

I've recently taken the plunge and started playing Infinity, having collected a fair amount of Combined Army models over the last year or so and I'm loving it!!!

My only wish is that I'd picked it up sooner!

There is currently an escalation league running at my local FLGS and having played about 3 games to date, I'm after a bit of advice in running an Onyx list. The next round is at 200pts and quite frankly, I'm struggling to put a list together that I feel is "decent".

I don't yet know what scenario we will be playing, but I do know I'll be facing a Haqq: Qapu Khalqi list.

Have you guys got any general pointers I can use in my list construction...? I'm currently thinking of building it around a Unidron fire team. To give you an idea of what I've got in terms of figures, here's a list:
    Umbra Legate
    Umbra Samaritan
    Xeodrons
    Overdron
    Maakrep Tracker with Multi-sniper
    Fraacta with Combi-Rifle
    Fraacta with Spitfire
Rodok fireteam box (Hacker & HMG)
    3 x Unidrons
Unidron SWC box (Spitfire, K1 Combi, Plasma Sniper, Missile Launcher)
    Doctor Worm and the wormettes
    Kerr-Nau (proxy Nexus..?)
    Suryat box
    2 x Ikadron
    2 x Imetron
    Q-Drone
    E-Drone/M-Drone

    Thanks in advance,

    Jam800

200 points can be a bit of a sticky wicket for Onyx as they're very elite, almost all Lts cost you SWC, and are based more on alpha strike than defense. Therefore even with cheap TAGs you're unlikely to get anything else in the list at 200 unless you're willing to make some sacrifices and if you want to run a unidron core, you already essentially have a .5 SWC tax for some sort of hacker (or tag) unless you stump for kerr nau, in which case you'll need an LT still.

as such if you're only a few games in and with your selection I'd probably suggest something like this:

    [IMG] Onyx Contact Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]9
    [IMG] KERR-NAU (UPGRADE: White Noise) Plasma Rifle + Pitcher, D-Charges / Breaker Pistol, Knife. (0 | 27)
[IMG] UNIDRON Spitfire / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (1 | 18)
    [IMG] UNIDRON K1 Combi Rifle + 1 TinBot A (Deflector L1) / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0.5 | 17)
[IMG] UNIDRON (Forward Observer) Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 15)
[IMG] UNIDRON (Forward Observer) Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 15)
[IMG] SURYAT MULTI Rifle + Light Flamethrower / Pistol, CCW. (0 | 41)
    [IMG] SURYAT Lieutenant HMG + TinBot A (Deflector L1) / Pistol, CCW. (2 | 45)
    [IMG] M-DRONE Combi Rifle, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 17)
    [IMG] ÍMETRON . (0 | 4)

    3.5 SWC | 199 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

It's extremely aggressive, you're not really concerned with getting your guys back in action since unidrons have dogged, you have a quick little specialist and you have a duo of Suryats to do a lot of your work, gives you a lot of efficiency even if you're only on 9 orders the sacrifices here were the heavy rocket launcher (rather than a HMG) and HD + legate to get an actual LT to make a legal list

If you do want to try and squeeze in a tag however, you could try this seven order nonsense:

    [IMG] Onyx Contact Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]7
    [IMG] OVERDRON 2 Heavy Rocket Launchers / . (2 | 57)
[IMG] [IMG] STALDRON Flash Pulse / Knife. (0 | 0)
[IMG] NEXUS Lieutenant (Specialist Operative) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 16)
[IMG] RODOK Paramedic (MediKit) Boarding Shotgun, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 21)
[IMG] RODOK Hacker (EI Assault Hacking Device) Boarding Shotgun, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 25)
[IMG] RODOK Combi Rifle, 2 Light Shotguns / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 26)
    [IMG] RODOK HMG / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 27)
    [IMG] MED-TECH OBSIDON MEDCHANOID Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 23)
[IMG] SLAVE DRONE Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)

    4 SWC | 198 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

It even has Dr Boobworm to look after your significant investments (which is everything), following on from my earlier point about sacrifices, this list gives up orders, but tries to be a bit tougher with a linked HMG and an engineer/doctor, the only resaon for the nexus Lt is the lack of SWC for a better one (rodok, legate or samaritan) and he fills the fireteam.

Finally as my first tea of the day kicks in you could try this:

    [IMG] Onyx Contact Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

    [IMG]10
[IMG] UNIDRON (Forward Observer) Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 15)
[IMG] UNIDRON (Forward Observer) Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 15)
[IMG] UNIDRON Missile Launcher, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (1.5 | 20)
[IMG] UMBRA LEGATE Lieutenant Spitfire, Flash Pulse / Pistol, DA CCW. (1.5 | 41)
[IMG] NEXUS Hacker (EI Hacking Device) Combi Rifle, Nullifier / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 24)
[IMG] IKADRON (Baggage, Repeater) 2 Light Flamethrowers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 9)
[IMG] IKADRON (Baggage, Repeater) 2 Light Flamethrowers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 9)
    [IMG] ÍMETRON . (0 | 4)
    [IMG] ÍMETRON . (0 | 4)
[IMG] XEODRON MULTI Rifle, Blitzen / Heavy Pistol. (0.5 | 58)
[IMG] [IMG] STALDRON Flash Pulse / Knife. (0 | 0)

    4 SWC | 199 Points

    Open in Infinity Army

A burst 5, BS 15 spitfire with mimetism, a burst 2 BS 14 Missile launcher with the potential for assisted fire, a budget but stilll extremely effective TAG as an assault piece and some chaff to make you up to ten orders, sacrifices: if you lose your hacker and your enemy has one they'll take you to pieces, if you lose the umbra you'll have a very interesting next turn especially if they have warbands, even with the umbra you'll still hate warbands or mid field skirmishers with mines, a 5pt monk or a well placed mine can ruin your link team.

Wow! Thanks for the tips, it's given me some food for thought:+1:.

I was getting quite focused on running lots of plasma to kill off the low bts haqq guys but i guess there's more than one way to skin a cat!

You're welcome, Onyx has lots of ways of skinning cats but are pretty focused on alpha strike (pretty much all of combined army really). Plasma is always good but has its disadvantages against models with total immunity and generally lacks suppression fire. Plasma, shock and fire are all good against haqq as they generally don't leave unconcious troops that haqq can get back in the fight, the Rodok team however still has it's uses with their better BS, visual mods, superjump for attacking from unexpected angles and their immunity to Isolation and EM come in handy against haqq.

Yeah - I'm trying to get my head around all the various special rules and weapon rules. Think this will take some work but I'm loving the depth of the game.

As for the Rodok, I'd more or less discounted them on the basis of high points cost coupled with slow movement so was struggling to see a fit for them in a 300pt list, let alone a 200pt list.

I keep trying to read up on Onyx force lists and read/watch/listen to advice from experience players blogs, podcasts and youtube vids and most seem to steer away from Rodok and plump for Unidrons - so it's refreshing to see your take on it by building in the Morats, as I was beginning to thinkn they wouldn't see any table time unless I moved over to a MAF list.

As it stands right now the Rodok link team is better in Onyx than it is in MAF (just add samaritans) and I'd say its probably MAF's strongest fire team. Unidrons and Rodoks are both extremely strong teams for wildly different reasons for the Rodoks the +1BS the mimetism and the superjump are fantastic and in Onyx it gives you resistance to loss of lieutenant (and as Onyx your Lt will generally be obvious and a high priority target) in the entirity of my CA collection playing all sectorials the highest kill count is my Rodok HMG. Right now in ITS they also get Forward deployment L1 to offset the speed disadvantage as well, with their higher phys they can also dodge effectively in a tricky spot.

Unidrons are great as they are lower cost, dogged and can use assisted fire and pack plasma, they can make a great castle to hide a hacker (kerr nau + deflector bot in a five man team), you can push or hold when you need to using dogged and a bot with assisted fire is an excellent defensive ARO, but in active the Rodoks can do the same but better with manuvering and super jumping to negate cover and catch models at range in ways your opponent will find it hard to plan for or defend against and excel in short range CQB and don't require hacker support

    Great and thanks again!

You've definitely given me plenty to think about and it appears I have more options available to me than I first realised.

I'm go and have a bash at putting a few lists of my own together but I do quite like your initial suggestion with the Suryats in, so may end up running that list (or one very close to it) and will report back with the outcome.

Of course I may need to rethink things entirely if the TO throws in a curve-ball with the his scenario choice but I guess the only real way to learn is by simply playing the game!!

Ok, so I found out that the scenario is going to be Quadrant Control, which looks to be a variation on Supremacy. With that in mind, I had a go a putting a list together. Unfortunately I've since realised I've not got a HMG Suryat, so I built a couple of similar lists but tweaked slightly for the mission. Appreciate your thoughts:

    [IMG] Supremacy
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────
    [IMG]9
    [IMG] KERR-NAU (UPGRADE: White Noise) Plasma Rifle + Pitcher, D-Charges / Breaker Pistol, Knife. (0 | 27)
    [IMG] UNIDRON K1 Combi Rifle + 1 TinBot A (Deflector L1) / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0.5 | 17)
[IMG] UNIDRON Spitfire / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (1 | 18)
[IMG] UNIDRON Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 14)
[IMG] UNIDRON Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 14)
[IMG] UMBRA SAMARITAN Lieutenant Breaker Combi Rifle, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Vorpal CC Weapon. (0 | 40)
[IMG] IKADRON (Baggage, Repeater) 2 Light Flamethrowers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 9)
    [IMG] Q-DRONE HMG / Electric Pulse. (1 | 26)
[IMG] FRAACTA Spitfire, Nanopulser / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 35)
    4 SWC | 200 Points

My alternative is the following, that builds in a Suryat Duo for the order efficiency but I've gone for a heavy rocket launcher over the HMG, purely due to models available in my pool:

    [IMG] Supremacy Alt
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────
    [IMG]10
    [IMG] KERR-NAU (UPGRADE: White Noise) Plasma Rifle + Pitcher, D-Charges / Breaker Pistol, Knife. (0 | 27)
[IMG] UNIDRON Spitfire / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (1 | 18)
[IMG] UNIDRON (Forward Observer) Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 15)
[IMG] UNIDRON (Forward Observer) Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 15)
[IMG] UNIDRON (Forward Observer) Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 15)
[IMG] IKADRON (Baggage, Repeater) 2 Light Flamethrowers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 9)
    [IMG] ÍMETRON . (0 | 4)
    [IMG] M-DRONE Combi Rifle, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 17)
[IMG] SURYAT Heavy Rocket Launcher, Light Shotgun / Pistol, CCW. (2 | 39)
[IMG] SURYAT Lieutenant MULTI Rifle + Light Flamethrower / Pistol, CCW. (1 | 41)

So, I played my game. Took a risk with the following list:

    [IMG] Onyx Contact Force
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────
    [IMG]8
[IMG] UMBRA LEGATE Lieutenant K1 Combi Rifle, Flash Pulse / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 40)
    [IMG] UNIDRON K1 Combi Rifle + 1 TinBot A (Deflector L1) / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0.5 | 17)
[IMG] UNIDRON Spitfire / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (1 | 18)
[IMG] UNIDRON Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 14)
[IMG] UNIDRON Plasma Carbine / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 14)
[IMG] FRAACTA Combi Rifle, Nanopulser / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 29)
[IMG] IKADRON (Baggage, Repeater) 2 Light Flamethrowers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Electric Pulse. (0 | 9)
[IMG] XEODRON Red Fury, Blitzen / Heavy Pistol. (1 | 59)

I only went for it as I really wanted to give a Xeodron a run out to try it. I knew my orders were limited and my low troop count and lack of hackers may have worked against me....

...As it turns out, I got lucky.

My opponent went for a vanilla Haqq list and didn't field a great many hackers, as he was more intent on using mechanised infantry and drop troops to play the mission and claim the board quadrants.

This meant, having won the initiative and elected to go first, I was able to out activate him on the number of orders in the first two active turns. Despite not firing a shot in the first active turn, I was able to get my troops into some solid positions to control the game.

Now I admit that a lot of that was down to luck (my opponent seemed unable to hit anything when it really counted or I was able to save/dodge any hit that landed). Originally my main fire team of the Legate and Unidrons were well out of position and I think were pretty vulnerable to being picked off from the right position, with no real decent lines of fire, but my opponents Halqa's spent an entire two turns crawling around on their bellies on the building above my Unidrons, with no clear lines of fire to anything on the board. So with the exception of a hidden Tuareg with a sniper rifle (quickly dispatched by the Ikadron at the start of turn 2), I was able to move around the board with impunity...

...it was at this point I found how good super-jump can be for getting into advantageous positions and my Xeodron found his sniper's perch overlooking almost the entire battlefield to begin hosing things down with his Red Fury.

If I'm honest, it all went a bit too well in my favour and so it was difficult too learn much from the game in terms of force selection. What was clear is that you can't really afford to lose sight of your opponent in your reactive turn and clever positioning is key.

Next round I think we're at 250 - so I may try a Rodok fire team on for size...
