@Aspect Graviton , please, pretty please with sugar and spice send me those Necrofinity rules. My local group would blow a fuse with them, as many players like the Infinity rules but don't like the minis, so this would be a cool way to introduce them.
As you wish: DISCLAIMER: Infinity need some pretty heavy modding to get to a way that reflects down and fleshwounds etc It is even more rules heavy than infinity Do not get attached to any of your gang members, they will all die, it is still infinity. It's more of a cautionary tale as to why a life of crime in a dystopian hypernightmare universe is lucrative but often extremely short lived. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1dSJ_1qd2hyz9kogtjH7x9xcDLSqlsRdv We also have an FB group for the Beta to discuss it all where I tend to answer questions more quickly as I get notifications, If you drop me a PM I can arrange adding you if you wish.
Speaking of board games and minis, I'm hoping it's finally out by Christmas, is Giga-Robo. I tried it out at Adepticon and loved it. I've been interested in Bushido. Mainly because some of the figs I could also use in Frostgrave. I want to do a Chinese fantasy themed group.
You, sir, are a gentleman. Thank you. Also, regarding boardgames: I bought The Others recently and my two gaming groups are loving the hell out of it. It's a dark 1vsMany game with lots of gribbly monsters and lots of throwing dice and punching stuff in the face. Pretty fun.
Not going to count D&D as a mini's game, so: Dropzone Commander & Dropfleet Commander That's it. That's my list.
Any interest in Kings of War: Vanguard? I'm tempted... a bit... Also, I'm trying to get into Dragon Rampant. Slowly assembling a somewhat crazy army for that...
D&D 4e was a miniatures game. Really. Frostgrave is very beer and pretzels. It's popularity peaked and faded quickly in my group. Someone pointed out MERCs 2.0 as an "Infinity Lite" game. It's from Megacon games. The rules are a free pdf. ( I think a link would be against forum rules, but a quick search will find it. ) The minis are not CB quality by any means. I have yet to convince my group to try it. We spend a lot of time playing D&D 5e.
Infinity is my main game at the moment but heres the list: 40k: Orks, Space Marines, and Imperial Guard (They will always be the Guard to me) 9th Age (formerly WHFB): Undying Dynasties (Tomb Kings) and Warriors of the Dark Gods (Warriors of Chaos). Also have Empire but am in the process of selling those. Battlefleet Gothic: Imperial Navy. Likely will use them to play Dropfleet Commander since that's picking up somewhat in the area. Dystopian Wars: Kingdom of Britannia and Russian Coalition Dystopian Legions: Kingdom of Britannia
Started with playing X-Wing 1.0 but didn't switch to 2.0 till now. Infinity is my main system and from time to time I'm playing Wastlands.
My huge Dark Angels army and my Beastmen and Dark Elves rest on my shelf, because of meh rules (40K) and dead game (WFB). I've got LotR and historical armies too, but never played them (I used to be more a painter than a player). I tried Kings of War, which is a nice game, but I've always preferred sci-fi, so... For a while I play X-Wing alot, that's a very fun and tactical game, but the transition to the second version let me unwilling to pay again for pieces of cardboard :x For now, apart from Infinity, my main game, I'm diving into Aristeia! This game is to my surprise really fantastic! I've just bought The Walking Dead: All Out War, too. Very cool-looking minis, nice and nervous rules (more interesting than Zombicide imo). I recently realized that as the years go by, I am more likely to play skirmish games, which wasn't the case ten years ago when I was dreaming of great apocalyptic battles... Adulthood or children's vampiric influence?
I've also got a small Empire of the Blazing Sun fleet for Dystopian Wars, but I've generally abandoned the game due to the rules lacking any fun, tbh the only reason I still have them is because the 2nd hand market for them is largely dead
Depending which battle group you have 1st ed or 2nd I'd be sympathetic to that, the 1st ed naval battlegroup was pretty dull, the 2nd ed had the Kaiju H.Battleship which was one of the most fun ships you use, @Fire@Will was and is still our native EotBS admiral so he'd know better.
I played in 1st edition mainly, game was already dead locally by the time 2nd came out. My beef with dystopian wars was the way weapon effectiveness degraded with damage taken, pretty much every game I played went thusly: Turn 1 - Massive explosions and exploding D6s everywhere, so carnage, much damage. Turns 2 -5 - Everyone sails around plinking ineffectively at each other as all their weapons now did significantly less damage and couldn't get through armour anymore
I had a similar issue with Firestorm Armada, the game just wasn't very interesting, and exploding dice made it very swingy.
So... any other interesting skirmish games you know of? As I mentioned, Mantic just launched Vanguard, their skirmish companion to Kings of War. It seems a bit like Infinity: warbands of dozen or so miniatures fighting it out, each trooper controlled individually etc. It's tempting, but I'm not sure if it's any fun? I haven't played it...
Infinity is my main game, but occasionally I like to mix things up a bit. Osprey Publishing makes a bunch of fun, light miniature games to use as an off-game. They are also generally miniature agnostic, so great for those that have orphaned miniatures collecting dust. Just don't go too hardcore on them. The systems I have tried have all had rules that could be abused hard. I have played 'Frostgrave', and 'Ghost Archipelago', both fun games, and close enough you can cross them. Recently I have been dabbling in 'Gaslands', which is a fun post-apocalyptic-vehicle-race/combat game. It is a lot of fun finding some hotwheels, scuffing them up, and gluing on some guns and rams. (If you own a dremel, or similar equipment, you can get into some really awesome hotwheels conversions.) Just the other day, my ambulance with mines welded to the side, blew up in spectacular fashion when my opponent used the nitrous boosters on his snowplow-equipped corvette to T-bone me. Like many I started with Warhammer 40k, but checked out at one of the times they lost their minds. Recently a good friend of mine has been pulled back in with the new Killteam game, but I haven't even been tempted to go back. I think it is a common affliction. Both of them.
2nd did a lot with that and EotBS suffered a lot from jack of all master of none, your rockets either did something spectacular round 1 or you lost a big advantage and had to fall back onto other weapon systems as your opponents got to effective range or you played FSA and just parked in your deployment and rellied on massive guns. 2nd everything became a lot more mobile, we did shed loads of the playtesting for it. generally our games at 1250pts in 2nd played to more infinity like game lengths turn 1 was positioning, turn 2 was a mid range scrap to try and reduce the effectiveness of key units turn 3 was the decider or as a prussian player what our group generally refered to as "swap boats at half time" as you sank or prized anything you could get close to. either with guns, assault points or sailing a battleship through it. I liked the aesthetic of firestorm but I was never truely enamoured by it, it was a game that wanted to be played at about 2000pts and at 2nd edition 800 was a manageable game length. Open combat remains my suggestion, it's basically bloodbowl mechanics as an actual skirmish fight, well worth a look. you use whatever models you like and then stat them according to a formula which is how you get a points value. Also Arena Rex if you can get hold of it, very good skirmish game.
The first one that gets mentioned in these questions is Song of Blades and Heroes. It's lauded because it's fast, easy, cheap and you can use whatever minis you please, so it's commonly used as first drug dose introductory wargame for newbies, specially at conventions. I've meant to try it since forever but always forget except when somebody asks a question such as this one
