I originally posted this on the spanish rules forum asking for a definitive ruling on veteran kazak with NWI active healing himself with a medikit. Some people said he can, others said otherwise and, apparently, if you go strictly by the rules the answer is no, a veteran kazak cannot heal himself. Thing is, it would make sense he could (I mean, he can shoot it away and an unconscious friendly trooper suddenly stands up healed but he can't apply it to himself?) so I hought maybe they forgot to add medikit to the exception in the rules that allows medics to heal themselves or there is something I'm not getting, or maybe there is a solid reason behind it not being able to? Anyway, I would like this post to work both as a survey to see how people play this in different communities and also a place where you can give your point of view on the matter. Sorry for my english and thanks in advance.
I can't see any rules argument against it, as the Requirements (base contact) are the same from both Doctor and MediKit. It's just a very risky thing to do, as you'll need to pass a PH9 Roll or kill the Veteran KAZAK, with no chance to re-Roll.
I see nothing in Doctor that give a special exception to allow to heal himself when in NWI. What he needs is base contact. What the FAQ clarified is that you can count as base contact to yourself. I don't see why that would only apply to Doctor, but not to Doctor Plus, Akbar Doctor and Medikit (used in base contact mode). edit: oops, not a FAQ, but a Remember note in the Doctor skill only that you can indeed use doctor in base contact with yourself.
When you write “the exception in the rules that allows medics to heal themselves”, what exception are you referring to? The ‘Remember’ blocks of text aren’t exceptions, they’re reminders of things established elsewhere. (I checked the wiki, there are 53 uses of the RemeberBox template, and the other uses are redundant statements consistent with rules established elsewhere.)
Also, I was told by an spanish warcor that the veteran kazak woudn't be a friendly trooper (like he can't be friends with himself or something like that), wich I found odd, and that it is not in base contact with himself, which I guess technically it's not. What would you guys say to that?
Why would Medkit work differently to Doctor. In addition, of course the Vet Kazak is friendly to himself, he's not an enemy or neutral, so must be friendly.
Another argument given by spanish warcors is the situation is analogous to a Traktor Mul with mines and baggage not being able to recharge himself. Thoughts on that?
It's exactly the same thing. If you don't count as being in base contact with yourself, it's not possible to Doctor yourself.
Do you want a bunch of English speakers using Google Translate to start busting heads in the Spanish forum? >:-) Some day CB will release an Engineer model with STR, and that model will be able to Engineer to repair itself because it is in base contact with itself. Or a 2 STR G:Servant paired up with an Engineer. You can complain that CB May have forgotten to put “You are in base contact with yourself as far as your skills and abilities are concerned” more clearly written elsewhere, but it’s still an established fact for the rules.
I don't even care that much, I always assumed it could but as someone said before it would be a very uncommon situation when it would be worth it, it was a friend that said it didn't and I thought I'd post it here to get a definitive answer. It's funny how it has unfolded with spanish posters divided but mostly saying you cannot use it (specially the warcors), and american posters saying of course you can.
