Unless the new book brings earth-shaking changes, we should have enough information to make some early Varuna lists. Because I'm a huge fan of TAGs, I want to play around with Cutter-centric lists. What are your ideas? Fusiliers Core with ORC HMG? Kamau wildcard? Croc men? All with Cutters!
I think it's a lot of SWC to take with any of the attack orcs, but 4 Fusi, Kamau MSV2 + Orc Feuerbach is pretty reasonable (and honestly that feuerbach might be worth active turn shooting once or twice.) The problem is that at that point you've got about 80 points, so maybe botspam + whatever KHD you're allowing to bring (or maybe a Jammer?)
I mean, something along these lines feels pretty strong to me. The Fusilier fireteam and Kamau sniper stand alone pretty well... but if you can put the Kamau INTO the Fusilier fireteam? WOW!!! When the Kamau rework was known i played with a Cutter, Kamau Haris HMG+MSR and dont remember if 2 Crocma +/ 4fusi core or only one Croc with a full link.... Remember it was fun and efective. Now we there are to many known unknow to try this (Cobra, Echo, Hellots, Montesa, Character Orc, etc...) Lets just not jump the gun and wait, it's just one or two weeks
Fusiliers fueling Kamau and a Cutter is fine, but the missing unit details are important because they represent the tools we need to support a TAG thatg only happens to be good at long range. The Cutter suffers with only a MULTI HMG, because it doesn't transition from lane-dominating to close-range attack all that well, and Varuna has a ton of cheaper units that can fill that lane-blasting role. We need the full picture of Cobras, Echo Bravo, Helots to tell us what the short range strengths are in Varuna, as well as what area denial/point defense units we have that can keep a Cutter safe and give it bastions to retreat to.
I'd be very interested to know if the Cutter receives a slight points adjustment or a new profile with with a new weapon option.
All Pano TAGs deserve a HFT! And if we are there, Breaker should be Pano's thing. Like Ariadna has AP and T2 everywhere. Breaker Spitfire on Seraph or Breaker HMG on Tik? +Aleph and Yu Jing can keep their Nanopulsers, the Ateks their chain colts, give us HFT/LFT!
Haha, I could see the HFT being omitted on a TAG who desperately wants to avoid fire. Breaker theme would be really cool though, albeit very powerful. For the cutter I was thinking maybe they throw something like the Zapper on him or something like that. or hell, you could go really crazy and give him pandas or parrots as an option
Worth mentioning that the RPG basically specifies that the Cutter has no short-range weapons. I don't know what the timeline was for the RPG though... Perhaps that information was passed to the RPG writer long ago, and the Cutter has since received some tweaks. But if the RPG is consistent with current info, then it's likely the Cutter will not get any short-range weapons. Fingers crossed that they do though...
It was going through the review process very recently, so I'd be a little surprised if something so obvious was totally missed. But it might simply have been held back as a "spoiler".
Problem with TAGs, that while they usually shoot down most of the stuff in their active turn, it's not exactly hard to hide from them. In reactive turn they are too expensive to leave out, HMG range is not exactly good for CQB, while HFT is a really good weapon, it may be too expensive to put them too much in front of free shots. Can I swap Uhlan's Feuerbach for a MULTI rifle, or maybe a pair of them?
eww god no. BS15 base, wiht range, and camo modifiers and a shot that hits like a mack truck when it does win the F2F are good ARO pieces. Especially when they can tank the shot back. Its even better when you stick them into supression fire. and -9 the opponent while shooting them back at B3 BS15 AP or Shock ammo I'll be writing up some cutter lists for sure over the weekend, Im very interested in working out what I can fit into a list htat contains them. Ive been thinking about them for a while however and unfortunately I dont htink they are great for DT missions so id be less inclined to include them in lists for tournaments that have DT missions featured heavily
TAG as ARO is all dependent on what your opponent is toting tbh. It's a case by case situation for me, while Turn 1 ARO is almost always a no-go from me. If the heaviest weapon their sporting by turn 2 is just a regular ol' HMG, hell yeah I'll leave my TAG out.
Cutters had an HFT in N1/N2, lost it in N3. Yes, they were straight up a Squalo with TO camo then. And disgusting!
Funny, the Cutter was one of the game's most iconic units back when HMG was simply "the best gun." Interesting how much times change. I'm looking forward to getting it back on the table though, especially in the full context of Varuna. I wish we had more information on how the Cutter integrates with the rest of Blue Sea. Are they their own unit? How are they structured with other Varuna units? Are they operating more actively off-world, with things going crazy on Paradiso? What kind of application are they being used for on Varuna (I mean, what kind of activities are the Libertos up to that justifies applying a TAG with EXP rounds?) I imagined Libertos operating in small cells, rather than having bases/camps, and using a Cutter vs 5-6 Helots seems far from "low profile".
