Fix it then. Explain the logic in a coherent way that we can use to answer the question when it inevitably comes up again. I think this is what the logic is: Any weapon (from http://infinitythewiki.com/en/Types_of_Weapons ) that performs a BS Attack is a BS Weapon. Only BS Weapons gain Burst bonuses from Fireteams. Everything else used to perform BS Attacks are just skills and equipment and do not.
But I have said my piece. It's not being heard. In a couple of months it will be all sorted because players will just explain how it works to each other. But it really is an example of why it's difficult to learn this game just by picking up the rules. This game works because of the amazing work of people teaching people and only using the rulebooks and wikis to clarify.
Update was pushed to include Zapper etc. It's a wiki you can check previous versions of it. It's not at all nefarious.
I'm sure it's not. Ijw it's absolutely not nefarious. Anyway it's really smart to point out this kind of thing so nobody could doubt (and maybe don't ask) . Mask
So Suppressive Fire Mode is a weapon now? Must be because you're so much smarter than everyone else. That's why you can distinguish which one is relevant between the "Weapons Chart" and the "Types of Weapons" List on your own without the aid of being told what to think at all. Alternately, all the people confused by it are stupid or lying, because it's not confusing or inconsistent or hard to understand in the slightest. Clearly why there's a 7 page thread about it.
Modest too Also, just quitely, its always funny when people start talking about how "smart" they are on the internet, with no clue of the education, employment or intelligence of the people they are talking too. Just always good for a chuckle.
For what it's worth, the FAQ entry lists the items that don't get the Burst bonus and that don't work with Triangulated Fire: Do MediKits, Forward Observer, Discover, Deactivators and Minesweepers get the Burst Support Bonus granted by a Fireteam? Can they be used with Triangulated Fire?
I guess the core problem is in the "why did they change that anyways?". If we had such an explanation, it would be rather easy to explain that to beginners (or yourself). An urgent reason might help to make that change clear...still can't see it. It feels like an unnecessary exception for something that has literally no impact on anything. Clearing up the motives might be much more helpful than arguing the wording of the rules. The faq is not out of logic...I do see the reasoning and they can be drieved from the rules. The problem is again in the details. It's a BS-Attack, so it get's the +3 on WIP in a 5 man fireteam, but it doesn't get the other bonus because not every BS-Attack has to use a BS-Weapon...and FO is treated like a BS-weapon (just as a Throwing or Technical Weapon, but in this case it's different)...this is hard to understand for anyone...just because it's so counterintuitive. An of course the WIKI is only a fanmade tool...but please...for someone who needs a quick answer, FO is listed under weapons. This has to lead to confusion! What is most important for me is not the tone of this thread, what is logical or who is right on what, but rather that I can go out there and can have reasonable and SHORT answers for things like this. And this here is just...not short.
I think CB itself do not know the rules for its own game (not know, not remember, not working, manyana - doesn't matter), instead of using rich base of rules they constantly add new rules. But no one is doing deep testing. I think they are quite small to perform nice testing of a product and that ends with "rule holes", "unintuitive moments", "strange FAQs" etc.
Let's be fair here: the ruleset is probably the most complex of all "popular" tabletops and only in relatively few situations do the rules not provide a sollution. In almost any situation, the rules are pretty consistent. Just try a game by Osprey...you will appreciate Infinity pretty damn soon. For sure designing rules is far more difficult than most of us imagine and testers usually have a sort of "intention bias", I'll admit that, but only the larger community will come up with rule holes as there are a lot of "creative" people out there. It's not that CB have wirtten this incompetently...but knowing the reasoning behing these changes would certainly help...especially regarding the flip-flopping of multi-wound+NWI+Shock, which doesn't really help trust in this faq.
This one is pretty simple - to make people buy more Asuras :) Oh, Ospray wargames - played some and I can agree, that those can be...strange. But almost none of them has a miniatures company behind. Compare CB to gripping beast, wyrd games, GCT studio...brr...even to Mantic games...or even Battle Gods by quickworthy ( and I didnt mention privateer press...well because it s a huge company ...so things might be different there) - and look at their rate of FAQs, rules "consistency"...
IJW is payed by CB to maintain the wiki and make sure it's 100% accurate with published information. No, forum answers, even if official, do not count as published.
Oh it's a fun bit of disjointed ruling. Throwing a javelin, for instance, is an "attack with a melee weapon" but not a "melee weapon attack". Likewise, punching someone is not an "attack with a melee weapon" but is a "melee weapon attack". it sounds simple, but some mechanics can make it very complicated
