So I returned to the game a little over a month ago after being a very active N2 player. I was really drawn to both the models and fluff of Spiral Corps so I dove in head first and have putting spiral through the ringer the last six weeks. I think I might approach Spiral slightly different then most because I've never played vanilla Tohaa and have no interest in Tohaa. I have been having good success with Spiral in both testing and tournament play.

Through two ITS events I only have one loss to the #2 ranked US player after thinking capture was kidnap in countermeasures. Purely for discussion sake I just wanted to share some things that I like doing/using that I don't see discussed on this board. Spiral reminds me a lot of an old school sectorial where your options are extremely limited but you have serious redundancy in your lists. Spiral can play the ARO game so well and has some extremely tough units, I really love the play-style. Another interesting thing about Spiral is their access to breaker and viral pistols, I have never shot so many pistols before playing this army.

First and foremost is a module that I call "the wall".

This is the best thing in the army, its usually my second combat group and then I just make a 253 point limited insertion list. With units this cheap you are rewarded highly when you have good luck and not really punished by bad luck. Every F2F you win or armor save you make will be a dagger in the heart of your opponent and the absolute worst case scenario is he uses one order to kill a 13 point model that was providing an order you weren't using. I start every list with this and it cannot be stated how many games these 5 alone have won me. Your opponent cannot ignore these 5 and every order spent dealing with them is just another win for you. I usually deploy them with aggressive line of fire onto objectives or important corridors, I I usually stack the warcor and Delegate next to a Helot forcing units to split burst or eat a free flashpulse. If you have an excess of SWC left but need points (Something I never have) you can change to the LRL Helots, these guys are the bane of fireteams and while I have had some insane success with them I prefer the extra burst of the SMM Rifle for winning F2F rolls.

Next is the second most important piece in my lists:

I'm sure most of you are taking the Taagma sniper but I am almost always including him in my Tri-Core, especially if I'm going second. Spiral has a difficulty with long range gun fights, I will put the sniper in a tri-core with a Kriigel with smoke to clear ARO threats from the deployment zone before swapping links for a close range gun fighter. After your meta has faced him enough the Holo means next to nothing but I will usually holo him as a Kosuil panzerfaust or warcor to try and influence my opponents deployment. Taking the Taagma sniper in the Tri-core on top the aforementioned wall module makes taking second a really easy choice.

The next piece that I use a lot that I don't see often is:

I know mates are the Tohaa cheese and that having CoC is great for using Rasail's and Neema as your Lt but I have a serious personal issue with symbiomates. For whatever reason whenever I use a unit with the Mate attached it encourages me to make stupidly aggressive plays that almost never work out. Some people see mates as a way to remove variance in the game but in the opposite way the wall module works I see mates as something that is punished by bad dice and wasting good dice. My brain works kinda weird on this but lets take a Draal Sitting in cover vs some mook with a rifle. The common argument I hear is that the Draal has a 95% chance to pass that armor save, you should be taking mates. If you roll a 9 or higher in this situation there is literally no difference to not having the mate except that now its gone and you wasted the points, if you roll a 1 or get crit you lose the mate and a wound. I will concede that the total immunity and chain of command is great, but I prefer to not get hit by a missile or flashpulse then to be able to ignore the special ammo. I am also always starved for SWC in Spiral so even the .5 saved taking bombs is a great relief. The bomb boy is also our cheapest triad filler.

Taking the bombs also lets you pull of the tricks I've detailed here https://forum.corvusbelli.com/threads/double-kiiutan-bomb-is-not-a-meme.35053/

Which bring me to my next units I'm in love with:

Our impersonators have done so much work for me once I stopped thinking of them as fidays and speculos and started thinking of the as superior infiltrators that don't have to roll. I will often take all three and just put Greif on a rooftop and the two Kiiutan on the ground. Combine these three with the wall, and the Tri-Core sniper and your opponent has too many threats to deal with on turn 1.

Almost done guys but I have a few units that I see almost no one talk about that have become big players for me.

    The first is

I started taking her in Countermeasures out of necessity but she is the definition of tool box. Shas has become big in my meta and being able to sensor in the midfield with a great midfield gunfighter has been priceless. There have also been several niche interactions that have come up that I was so glad she was on the board for, things like triangulating shots into close combat from 38" away when my opponent was trying to complete a CC classified or being able to killer hack linked hackers to eliminate the 5 man bonus.

The final unit is my special boy that I never see mentioned on here:

Most of spiral's pieces are just coming straight this is our one piece that can come on the side and he has the perfect gun and is pretty cheap. I'll be honest I've never hit anything with his medikit but I've hit a lot of things with his shotgun!

The final things I want to talk about are the Draal and the Kriigel. Yes these guys are amazing and I put them into almost every list but the Draal does not need to go into the Tri-Core, its just overkill most the time. Tohaa players consider him a must take without tri-core and I think he works better as an additional threat on top of the Tri-Core or joining a tri-core late game after its gunfighter has gone down. With the Kriigel I have screwed myself over so many times trying to aggressively Eraser things. Isolated isn't dead and that one order may be all that unit needs to break your tri-core. Eraser is best used to surgically break a link or out of LoF AROs, but even without Eraser the Kriigel is still a must take for the smoke and Mirrorball.

Well I typed this out mostly for fun because I have truly been loving Spiral but plan on trying my hand at vanilla Ariadna for a bit, just wanted this written down so I remember it all when I come back to Spiral!

The kaauri is there to fill points because nothing in this army costs 9 points after making him a warcor

I like to differentiate my battlegroups, in ACTIVE and ARO duty.
My experience if you play the Taagma Sniper for aro defense it's always better to no put him and his Link on the main BG.
They are candidate target for enemy infiltrator and Template. If the sniper is in the second BG if enemy kill him you just lost ARO piece and not precious order or you main.

I usually like to run something like this as secondary BG :

    Spiral Corps
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────

CHAKSA AUXILIAR (Baggage, Sensor, Fireteam: Special Triad) Heavy Flamethrower / Pistol, CCW. (0 | 10)

If I play extra Helot they goes here. Then usually my main BG goes around 9/10 model and regular orders.
The Brawlers are a worth upgrade over the Chaksa if you have the points, 2x Light Shotgun gives the Taagma a good defense. The taagma being Shock immune realy benefity from having a Doc just for ressing him and considering that they are in the second BG you don't have to "steal" orders from your rambo or other specialist.

I will have to give that a try but like I said I really enjoy tri-coring the sniper and using him in active turn. I do like the concept of using the brawlers with him and holoing him as a brawler HRL

    Nice post!

I've been using only the LRL Helotbur I should give the MM rifle a try.

Depending on the rival and the table setup, I tend to hide the sniper tagmaa and use him in a give turn through smoke.

The reason is that usually, three helots and a warcor is enough to slow down the enemy for most of their first turn. Then I like a chaksa triad with the tagmaa lieutenant or something, so B2 HFT is enough to protect some building edges or short fire lanes.

I agree on kiuutan. Two is far better than one, but it could determine too much your playstyle.

    Have you tried Jan Staar?

I totally agree on Aelis. Totally a must in every list.
