I quote the Reference Guide: In addition to Actions, some Character cards include Automatic Skills, indicated by their orange title . Automatic Skills’ Effects are always active, even during an Enemy’s Activation, or when the Character is in the Infirmary or the Bench. So "You can suffer instead of an adjacent Ally" Flipping a burning token can cause damage = so I would say Yes, Maximus may absorb the damage.
And that's the right answer, 'cos Maximus may suffer Damage instead of an Adjacent Ally, but "Get Behind Me!" does not specify a source this Damage comes from.
