New player with 5 games under my belt. The 5 games were the 5 introductory missions in code one. So forgive me if this has an obvious answer that I've overlooked. In the last game we had a situation in which my Jujak popped around a corner to roast my opponent's Knight of Justice with his heavy flamer. As we worked it out, the Knight was able to pass a normal PH roll to Dodge and avoid all damage. Is that how it's supposed to work? It seemed odd to me that it was so easy given that if I had attacked with the combi rifle profile, it would have been a Face to Face roll and I had a chance to win the roll and force an armor save. With the flamer I automatically hit and there was no FTF roll. This seems weak to me.
You played it correctly. What you're missing is that by Dodging the KoJ had no chance of wounding the Jujak, if they had chosen to return fire you would have gotten a guaranteed hit with a very dangerous ammo type. If you're the Active player then you can also wait to see if your opponent Dodges or shoots before you decide which weapon to use.
That's how it goes, it's a tradeoff With a template you can hit more targets and have a guaranteed hit if the target shoots back, but they can dodge out of it normally.
Ok, thanks. I thought we played it right, but it felt wrong. We're still very sloppy with all the declarations.
It's also not the target a flamethrower is really for, elite HI that take up 20% of a 25 point list are unsurprisingly going to be pretty resistant to a cheap secondary weapon like a flamethrower, but 2-3 Fusiliers are going to be in a lot more danger, especially if some don't have LoF due to intervening figures.
I know, but in a previous game I got the knight when the Orc trooper triggered an ARO and I could hit both of them with the template. My opponent did have a group hiding behind a building, but I didn't have the orders to get there and flame them all.
Yeah, that's when templates can be particularly dangerous as the Knight won't be able to Dodge at all. Even with ARM5 a KoJ stands a decent chance of being burnt to the ground by an unopposed hit.
