Welcome to my second thread, this time showcasing my Nomads. After finishing the majority of my Morats and learning more about the Infinity universe I decided to return to the Nomads. I had originally painted them in the red, white and black stuido scheme but I never really liked it and wanted a more hard core look for my Nomads. Each time I choose a scheme I try to challenge myself to learn to paint a new techinique I struggle with. I had never had a good formula for painting black so I decided to have a predominiatly black scheme.

The look I was going for was a group of ruthless guns for hire which contained most of the criminal elements of Corregidor. The studio scheme doesn't make the Nomads look like the proffessional, veteran soldiers they are supposed to be in my opinion. The army includes all of the Nomad heavy hitters and plays very aggressively. This is the army that I have played the most and is what I ended up using in the Strike Zone Wotan Campaign #rememberlaforja.

First up are the poster boys of the army, the models that drew me to infinity in the first place, the Mobile Brigada. Unfortunately my new camera seems to be washing out the florescent green on the models.

    Next the cheap order generators....

My Moran proxie. Love this model and he always performs well on the table.

Hellcat Hacker. I did also paint the HMG Hellcat but its scale and design was so offensive on the eye that he has gone into the bits draw never to return. I am a big fan of the new Hellcat in the beyond Icestorm box but I haven't got my hands on one yet.

    Bandit Hacker conversion.

Jaguars. Top performers on the table but whenever I look at them I feel frustrated I didn't nail the tatoos. It's a technique I need to master in the future. I had them painted without tatoos and spent a whole weekend deliberating on whether to add tatoos.

Intruder MSR...until I but the Beyond Icestorm box.

    Gecko! Star of Wotan.

That is the current state of my Nomads. In my mind they are the first sectorial I own that I consider finished. They are a well rounded army that performs well on the table and looks great on the shelf. I live in hope that a new Corregidor starter set will be released with Wildcats and Intruders in scale. If that happens I will pick it up and add to this army for sure. But until then it will stay as it is. I need to decide if they will return for the next global campaign or if I will play as another faction this time.

In addition I did write some battle reports during Wotan that I will upload at a later date.

Along with every man and his dog I intend to start a Tunguska sectorial as soon as they are released. In preparation I decided to test out a colour scheme on the Spektre I have from O:IS. I had to remove a previous paint scheme and so some of the details were a little lost. I managed to paint this in just 2 sessions which was a massive relief after painting white for the past month. It was only when I had finished that I realised I had strayed pretty close to the official scheme (something I try to avoid).

I plan to make my Tunguska a Criminal Underworld organisation known as the Red Right Hand who specialise in black ops where lethal force may be necessary against civilians or government forces. After seening the Meths copper Haqisslam I wanted to try the copper technique so all of the models will be grey/black with their red arms copper. So enough chat, here is the test piece (tried photgraphing closer but it's not forgiving.)

Also I may have been playing God of War lately....

@PauloCavalcanti thanks, I'm pretty proud of my Nomads. They sit in pride of place at eye level in my glass cabinet.

@Redfaint I'm on holiday at the moment but when I get home I will post a step by step for the black.

Another question for the heap: How did you do the Bandit Hacker conversaion (what parts did you use)? I’m of the mind to do something similar with my Icestorm Healer.

Maybe @Captain Spud tutorial will help meanwhile?
    Grrr... site seems down currently...

Well, one trick to paint black is to use black. And then limit lights to small zones, if you make them too big (like with other colors, applying broad mid shades all over the place), it looks grey.

Ok a black tutorial. First of all a disclaimer that black is hard to photograph so some of these images may be difficult to make out the various glazes.

The good thing is that you only need 5 paints to achieve this version of black:

Next you need to prepare your wet pallete. Don't have one? Stop, go on you tube, then go and make one. It's a game changer. I start by mixing the Royal Purple and Black to make the first highlight. This glaze should be thin and remain fairly dark. Then I take some of this mix and add some Lotheren blue to make the second highlight. I then repeat the process and take some of this mix and add more Lotheren Blue. The final highlight involves adding pure white to the mix. I don't like highlighing with pure white so this is where I stop. I then made the shade using a mix of Bugmans Glow and Black. This should remain fairly dark but be heavily watered down. In the end my wet pallet looks like this. I don't have specific measures and so just play around with it until you can make the colour by sight.

Today's model is the severed legs of the morat pilot.

Ok so onto the painting. First under coat black....duh.

Next take the purple black mix and glaze towards where you want the highlights. I usually start around the mid point of the area leaving at least half black.

Next use the first Lotheren Blue mix to add more hightlights. Draw the brush towards the edges and keep the paint thin.

Use the next Lotheren mix to add brighter highlights in the same manner covering less of the area.

At this point I add the shade in order to get a balance to the are. Take the Bugmans and Black mix and glaze it from where your purple/black border starts and drag it towards the shadows leaving black at the deepest areas. This gives your shadows some depth. It's hard to photograph this but it makes a big difference.

Scan the area for the feline menace. This step can be skipped but if you do then you risk a stray cat hair really fucking up your paintjob further down the line. Use water if necessary.

Now we add the final highlight of Lotheren Blue plus White only on the very edges where you want the strongest highlight. To be honest I went a bit far on this model and I would bring it back to a darker tone using glazes from previous stages.

I hope that helps. It's not an exact process and you can use previous stages of glaze to make corrections if the area gets too bright.

@GingerGiant the bandit conversion uses the arm of Cordelia from the Scarface TAG box and a part from the Moran Proxie which is a Dark Age model Saint Issac I think?

Back in my Warmachine days, I occasionally made simple Photoshop tutorials to answer questions on the Privateer forums. I don't think I've ever collected them anywhere, but let's see how many I can dig up...
They weren't intended to be high-quality pro techniques-- just quick step-by-steps to put people on the path to achieving moderate results. :)
