This used to be my back up attack piece fo the Grey, but between the grey, Uxia, and a pair of caterans and 4 galwegians I only needed to use him maybe once or twice and half that time he was out of position. Ultimately I decided that leveraging Camo and its abillity to move-move even/particularly against MSV2+ troops to synergise with the FOs and a Katyusha. as Mac pointed out, a good place to get a stand alone AP HMG or a second B5 AP HMG is hte mormaers, pricey, particularly linked but worht considering. You also have Mcmurough, hes TI and should be able to get up the board to monster that Nisse MSR in a pinch. moving 6 and dodging on 16s with ARM4 and 2 wounds.... On another note, consider splitting the galwegians and putting wallace in the combat group with teh vols 1) this lets you use 1 order pool to set up a gal rush, and hte other to rush and thats very effective as a strategy. 2) It leaves you with a link to chuck wallace in if you want that security, and you can still keep the gals in front of him to protect him.
If you want to leverage aggression and 2 B5 AP HMGs. Something like this would be along the lines of what I would build Caledonian Highlander Army ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 8 2 2 WALLACE Lieutenant Combi Rifle + Light Flamethrower, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 35) HIGHLANDER Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 6) HIGHLANDER Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 6) HIGHLANDER GREY AP HMG, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, CCW. (1.5 | 34) VOLUNTEER Paramedic (Medikit) Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10) VOLUNTEER Paramedic (Medikit) Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10) VOLUNTEER Chain Rifle, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 6) VOLUNTEER Chain Rifle, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 6) UXÍA McNEILL (Covert Action) (CH: Limited Camouflage, Superior Infiltration, Specialist Operative) Boarding Shotgun, D-Charges, Smoke Grenades / 2 Assault Pistols, AP CCW, Knife. (0 | 27) 112 Light Shotgun / Pistol, CCW. (0 | 12) GROUP 2 3 4 2 CALEDONIAN MORMAER (Fireteam: Haris) AP HMG / Pistol, Knife. (2.5 | 43) CALEDONIAN MORMAER (X Visor) T2 Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 33) CALEDONIAN MORMAER (X Visor) T2 Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 33) HIGHLANDER Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 6) HIGHLANDER Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 6) CATERAN T2 Sniper Rifle / Pistol, AP CCW. (1 | 24) WARCOR (Aerocam) Flash Pulse / Stun Pistol, Knife. (0 | 3) 5 SWC | 300 Points Open in Infinity Army
Slight tweaks, I think I'd prefer to make that list something like this: Caledonian Highlander Army ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 8 2 2 WALLACE Lieutenant Combi Rifle + Light Flamethrower, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 35) HIGHLANDER Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 6) HIGHLANDER Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 6) HIGHLANDER GREY AP HMG, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, CCW. (1.5 | 34) ISOBEL McGREGOR T2 Rifle, Flash Pulse, D-Charges, E/Mauler / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 26) VOLUNTEER Chain Rifle, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 6) VOLUNTEER Chain Rifle, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 6) VOLUNTEER Chain Rifle, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 6) UXÍA McNEILL (Covert Action) (CH: Limited Camouflage, Superior Infiltration, Specialist Operative) Boarding Shotgun, D-Charges, Smoke Grenades / 2 Assault Pistols, AP CCW, Knife. (0 | 27) 112 Light Shotgun / Pistol, CCW. (0 | 12) GROUP 2 3 3 1 CALEDONIAN MORMAER (Fireteam: Haris) AP HMG / Pistol, Knife. (2.5 | 43) CALEDONIAN MORMAER (X Visor) T2 Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 33) HIGHLANDER GREY T2 Boarding Shotgun, Grenades, Smoke Grenades, D-Charges / Pistol, CCW. (0 | 25) HIGHLANDER Chain Rifle, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 6) CATERAN T2 Sniper Rifle / Pistol, AP CCW. (1 | 24) WARCOR (Aerocam) Flash Pulse / Stun Pistol, Knife. (0 | 3) 5.5 SWC | 298 Points Open in Infinity Army
Specifically I like link teams that can cover all of the range bands with strong responses. Putting the grey in with a T2 boarding shotgun covers that 8 in Range Band with something very threatening. Same idea with adding Isabel to the volunteer fire team, chain rifles and shotguns have the under 8 covered already, and the HMG obviously handles 16 and up, but throwing in a t 2 rifle for that 8 to 16 makes for a nice extra threat in all ranges.
See for me, unless I can get redundancy in thlse range bands it looks like more of a weakness. The T2 BS while excellent leaves the opponent the opportunity to leverage his strengths vs the links weakness (shotgun outside of 16 and ARM3/6 over 8) to strip the AP HMG and the other T2 rifle of their effective bonuses. I prefer the philosophy as looking at the role of the link relative to the whole army, the link doesnt need to cover every range or eventuality in my opinion if the army does as you can take steps to use the tools where appropriate. I can appreciate that this is more getting into a discussion of different philosophies though than a one way is better than the other. EDIT: In terms of composition I like the AP HMG as the active gun for as you say 16-32, with the T2s active once up close, but in reactive I'll be more aggressive iwth the T2 rifles, because even after link bonuses go a B1 T2 shot that his on 13s out to 32s is a solid ARO threat, being ARM 8 and Dogged in cover so that the opponent cant just ignore them makes them even more brutal in reactive. Having the 2 of them as point guards and burying the AP HMG in reactive is more my play
I'll try out both of your lists. I'm a bit skeptical of the Mormaers but I'll see how it goes and the new AP HMG is such a sweet model that I've been looking for an opportunity to buy it.
