I'm a little confused on why people are thinking rooftops are scenery. they are, in most cases, specifically not cited as scenery. you cannot shoot them, destroy them, or generally interact with them at all outside of getting cover. Infinity is pretty explicit about what is scenery and what is not and buildings rarely ever fall into the category of "Scenery" maybe CB choosing the word scenery wasn't the best choice.
Great, and that’s in keeping with what others are saying; no problem. Please could someone provide references to these rules for us? Thank you.
http://infinitythewiki.com/en/Scenery_Structures These are the rules for defining what is and isn't scenery. if you are applying these rules to a building or console or whatever, then it is scenery. if you are not, it is not technically "scenery" as defined by CB.
Ok, thanks. We have a historical thread with some flaming* and Palanka affirming @toadchild's post: So (1) the answer to my question is that a Scatter-ing AD unit can indeed land on any flat surface such as a building's roof, if it's large enough for the unit's base, because the flat surface is not considered 'Scenery', correct? However, if we'd applied the Scenery Building/Structures rules to that flat surface from @MikeTheScrivener's link then (2) that same roof would become an illegal landing place, and the unit would just walk on at the Deployment Zone for a failed drop? Frankly, that seems a bit of a stretch, but I'm getting used to Corvus Belli's inability to use negative clauses); do we think (3) this means that applying Scenery Structure rules to a Landing Pad would stop it being usable as such, at least by default? * I must say I think the thread serves as a sobering lesson in how forums can read retrospectively...
Easiest way to solve that is 'unless you're drying to blow a hole in the roof, it's not scenery' if 'you're trying to blow a hole in the roof' then it has some of the properties of scenery (to allow you to attack it etc).
I guess theoretically, if you assign a scenery profile to a landing pad then no, you couldn't land on it. Just note that under the scenery rules they explicitly state that these rules are rarely used, so landing on an illegal roof would likely never happen. only when the mission explicitly says these rules are in use they are, or you decide to house rule it.
So does that mean we do the same as after an Encounter - moving the model 1 mm to show it isn’t in cover?
Wow, this thread didn't even take one full page to get derailed. Regarding landing in buildings, the Landing Assistance rule in ITS 11 says the following: If I understand the "closed scenery elements with a full or partial roof" part correctly - that means no dropping under a bridge, either.
How was it derailed? Looks fairly on topic all the time to me. Keep in mind that Assisted Landing doesn't exist outside of ITS 10+ and didn't exist when I asked that question during late ITS 9. Even during ITS 11, the question of "can I land under a bridge or other elevated scenery while technically not landing indoors?" remain.
