I always thought that it's just a representation of symbiont armor modified using EI's own biotechnology...

 

I never noticed they changed that in HSN3.

 

Never seen pre-N3 rules, but indeed - nowdays there's a specific clause on the list of exceptions:

"Units possessing more than one Troop Profile whose cumulative Wounds Attribute is greater than one (for example, units with Transmutation)."

As a collateral effect, this Special Ammunition prevents biological beings using the Transmutation Special Skill for the rest of the battle once they are wounded.

That's how the 2nd edition rules were written. You just had to deal with it.

You can reposition the Fraacta's jump pack without risking it breaking (nor cutting it for repositioning, as it looks in the photo) so the "feathers" surround the model and it looks like touching down, specially with the BSG model (it also has the advantage of not using so much space! Great for transport).

 

This is my understanding as well. No longer fire sensitive, and provides extra survivability once damaged.
