I agree that tournaments impact the way we play, more so the larger ones. But as others have said that alone does not make them official.
Well that's exactly the problem... if you go to such an event (wherever in the world it happens to be) you'll be playing by those rules - whether or not it's communicated to you before play.
Yes, I'm saying that I don't think that ruling reflects the way most people play the game. Comments from @ijw and others, in fact, suggest that wasn't even how everyone at that tournament played.
To be honest, the way I read all of this, I wouldn't be surprised if this never shows up again and that next time there's going to be a different oddity.
It's in CB's hometown, gets top billing on their site, and it has a LOT more nations involved than the US tourneys pull in, including many of the best American players. By definition that makes it the world championships. Note the "world" part there, not "Hey we got a lot of dudes from Texas to one very large tourney." BTW, Murrican here, living in Europe. I thought the US was the center of the world until I left. Turns out it's far from it, and getting farther every day.
I think you misunderstand why i don't think of it as championship in this context ('top level play' being the center of the discussion) Its not because only a few US folks make it over, its because it is whoever jumps on the site the fastest and gets in plus the 10 spots for satellite wins are the ones who get to play. It is not the top ranked players across each region by invitation. That is my def. of a championship. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
The 10 spots for winning satellites go to some of the best players in the world. Those players have won other international tourneys, which I'd call top ranking. With the satellite system set up, it is definitely the world championship. There may be a fair number of non-uber-champeens there too, but the champs of the large sanctioned events are all there. ITS ranking is more about playing a crapton of games, winning a fair amount but sheer win ratio is not the determinant of ITS points. You just have to play a crapton. And some of the previous winners have basically beaten baby seals in small tourneys for the wins, thus the recent seasons' weighting system for tourney size. As for "only a few US folks make it over", lots of US folks make it over by ratio with the number of nations represented. I'll be one of them this year and there's apparently quite a herd usually. 4th most populous visitor nation out of 20 despite being an ocean away. You're right it's mostly Spaniards, but then isn't half their playerbase from the single nation of Spain? [Edited to be more precise and remove my jerk attitude. Been grading all day sorrz.]
Back to minelayer though: Here's hoping for a FAQ on that soon, maybe starting with the "are camo tokens declared as part of a group?" question first. Will Bostria or Interventor be at any events where we could ask them anytime soon? I assume one of them will be in Lyon in April, but it would be nice to know before then. Will one of them be at Adepticon?
I wasn't going to bother pointing out an ITS rank doesn't necessarily equate to top level play play... but there you go. Winning big events still doesn't out-weigh quantity of tournament play when comes to the K value changes in the ranking. We know the ranking system isn't telling us much about skill. Interplantary has roughly 5 US per year (which for an entire player region is an unrepresentation) The reason i brought up Spain plus Euro and other is the regions are represented unequally due to lack of ability to travel for various regions (US and Rest of the World) Again, the interplanetary was listed as a the 'top level' tournament as a means to generate weight of authority to accept a ruling on camo markers, when thats not its purpose nor has it ever been advertised as such. It IS a global event with some of the best players in attendance but a majority is just the fastest to click / sign up. You are taking a portion of the conversation and running in a different direction (Murica is all that matters blah blah) than what we are talking about. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
Guitier is um... funny about answering rules questions based on my interactions with him over the years at tournaments. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
Well, if there's a World Championship it has to be -somewhere-. That somewhere being CB's hometown and the country with the longest-running and densest playerbase makes sense. Players from elsewhere not making it over will be an issue no matter what continent it's on. Establishing it as the world championship might help encourage better attendance, and that's probably part of the satellite structure's purpose. Fair point. But if the champs are there, even if they're diluted by a lot of us other folks who are not champs, it's still a way for them to face off. Actually even better by design IMO if you introduce a bunch of spoilers/give outsiders or newcomers a shot at coming out of nowhere for the most prestigious trophy. Also good point. I cut that bit out, to be more polite. I get a little bitter about the homeland these days.
Met him at dinner at the Lyon event last year, and everyone kept respectfully away from rules, mostly on fluff when the game was discussed. Now I understand why, good to know. :)
yeah... When you have an "Arguably" ambiguous rule, and one interpretation of that rule makes other rules pointless and unworkable (ambush camo) while the other does not. Its safe to assume that unless directed specifically otherwise (in an FAQ) the one that doesnt cause ramifications to other rules is the correct one
Well considering that at least one TO at a high-level event found it logical... and there have been other specious rulings, like the recent Shock vs. NWI/Dogged one.
Also we arent talking "unexpected" like the 2w shock ruling. We are talking actually breaks ambush camo. Theres a world of difference there
The contents of your Camouflage and TO Camouflage Markers is private information (cf wiki). Unless you find an argument saying combat group is not part of it, the interplanetario rulling is wrong. PS : and I agree with daboarder : this rulling destroy ambush camo making it 100% useless => more weight on it being wrong
