Yeah, or it's just short for "Japanese". Not everywhere is the same, not every usage is the same. People can say "butt" without talking about an arse and people can say "Jap" without implying all Japanese people are Tokyo Joe.
"I don't think it's offensive so it's not offensive" is a poor excuse. And when multiple people call someone to stop using it the correct way to go is to stop, not argue for a "right" to use ut. A few years back we've had a public prosecutor here arguing that swastika on the wall - drawn in a clearly fascist context - wasn't fascist, because it's a buddhist luck sign. Sure, not every usage is the same, but there are limits how much one can stretch it.
No, it's the polite way. "Correct" speech can fuck right off. Being considerate of other people's feelings is a good thing, and it's not hard to stop saying "Jap" when asked. That said, if someone isn't trying to belittle anyone on racial grounds, why are you guys demanding they correct their speech according to your own sensibilities, with no regard for where they are from or what they are accustomed to? Like in the example from Google Maps, a business can be called Aust-Jap Motors and the Jap is offensive but the Aust isn't just because 70 years ago some Americans made some posters, and the whole world or at least the English speaking part of it has to follow these rules where you can abbreviate some countries and not others. Dumb!
Guys I think that debate has gone far enouph, personally its the first time I hear the term "Japs" been offensive it might be to some, it is not to others, I think the debate is not really for this thread.
Well, now you know that it is a slur. Primarily in the US and not as bad as others but it carries significant historical baggage. So maybe take it into consideration in your future moderating duties.
@Icchan: as much as I like the comic, it doesn't account for one thing: there's a giant difference between "it's offensive because I believe otherwise" and "it's offensive because it's hateful against people" ;) But I agree with psychoticstorm, we've made enough of a shitstorm, and it's only page 10.

Guys if we start accounting what is offensive in every part of the world, I am not sure we will be able to breath without it been offensive, so ok for at least some parts of the US "Japs" is regarded offensive and with a historical baggage, in other parts of the world it is not and international opinions conflict. I think the community needs to compromise and compromising sometimes is accepting that the same thing can and cannot be offensive depending on culture and carry on.
I have a feeling that if he gets drunk enough to spill the beans he'd have started trolling telling people made up stuff a few drinks before so the question is which information you get is really true...
