The latest (5.3) rules update gave us this rules change to impetuous. "Restriction: Impetuous Troopers cannot enter Marker States (Camouflaged, Impersonation...), or any other States that say so. Furthermore, they cannot enter Prone state at the end of the Order." Can impetuous trooper go prone after movement? Can impetuous trooper go prone after failing a guts check? The reason why I'm asking is that unlike with the minelayer* change, CB didn't write the a RAI (rules an intended) for the impetuous change ("Adjusted the restriction on the Impetuous skill.") * The minelayer RAW (rules as written) is ambiquous but RAI is very clear based on the change log ("Clarified Minelayer skill to prevent an exploit when deploying deployable repeaters.").
I suggest simply ignoring this FAQ. This is a discussion I had on Discord earlier. https://discord.com/channels/118301609146056709/617207022965882913/1544390003944194210
Not while using the Impetuous order. After that, no problem with regular or irregular orders. You can deploy prone but if you use it they need to get up. If you need to make a guts check when you used an imp order, you can't go prone. It's all about when using that one order.
But the rule categorically states Impetuous Troopers, not impetuous phase. If it's only restricted to the imp phase, the rule will state so as in the bullets above this rule.
I'm reading the Impetuous rule and it says Phase in the case of prone. If they could never be prone, why even have the below rule? In the Impetuous Phase, when declaring Move, Jump, or Climb, the Trooper must cancel Prone State, move the full corresponding MOV value, and cannot enter Prone State at the end of the movement. Under the Prone rule it only has these restrictions. Impetuous is not in it. Restrictions Chart TAGs cannot go Prone or declare Cautious Movement. Troopers mounted on Motorcycles cannot go Prone, declare Cautious Movement, Climb, use ladders, or perform an upwards Jump. Troopers with the Aerial Special Skill cannot go Prone or declare Cautious Movement. Vehicles (VH) cannot go Prone or declare Cautious Movement.
Ok, so they really need to FAQ this because what does the 5.3 update of the rule as posted by OP even mean? As of now the rules contradict each other.
Like I know that is very poorly written. It's painfully obvious for anyone who has actually played the game. Ofc no-one here could ever answer the question because how could they because it's so poorly written? Another case of Normus Belli. I'm merely trying to raise awareness about this issue and force CB into releasing a (hopefully) better FAQ next time.
I sincerely think this is just a new restriction to Impetous troops. Nor that they can not go prone EVER. But just that they can not go prone AT THE END OF AN ORDER. Want to go prone with an Impetous troop? You must go prone at the start of the order and then to your movement. Effectively limiting what you can acomplish, but not forbiding it completely. Of course during an impetous order you must stand up no matter what...
Except activated troopers can go prone at the start (and end of) movement, not end of order. I'm not saying that you are incorrect about the RAI (rules-as-intended) of the rules change. It's just is so poorly written that it's impossible to determinate the RAI. "A Trooper may change its status from Normal to Prone, and vice versa, at either the start of their Movement or at the end of their Movement, by performing any Short Skill or ARO with the Movement Label (except for Jump) (See FAQs.) or as a result of a failed Guts Roll. However, this will affect their Silhouette and the distance they can move around the game table." RAW the problematic sentence only affects guts move which happens at the end of order. Or to be more precise during "5. Resolution" of the OES. Is "5. Resolution" the same thing as end of order in this context?
There are several possible ways to interpret this FAQ: 1.During the Impetuous Phase, if an Impetuous Troop is activated, it cannot enter the Prone state at the end of that activation. I think this is probably the most reasonable interpretation. The intent would be that the Troop cannot end its movement in the Prone state. However, an Impetuous activation does not spend an Order; it activates the Troop directly. 2.A Troop with the Impetuous Skill cannot enter the Prone state with its second Short Skill or Long Skill before the Order ends. This would make things particularly awkward when an Impetuous Troop uses skills such as Cautious Movement or Climb. 3.A Troop with the Impetuous Skill cannot enter the Prone state when making a Guts Roll. If this were the intended meaning, there would be no particular reason to specify “at the end of the Order.” They could simply state that an Impetuous Troop cannot enter the Prone state as a result of a Guts Roll. 4.The Prone state is automatically cancelled when the Order ends. If this were the intended meaning, it would be a significant nerf to Impetuous Troops, since they would effectively lose the ability to remain Prone after their Order ends.
Excellent summary @Angus . One quick comment: 4.The Prone state is automatically cancelled when the Order ends. This would be a buff for some Impetuous troopers (looking at you competitive priced 6-2 impetuous+nanoscreen HI troopers) could advance in prone state and then pop-up those emitters/panzerfausts without triggering ARO (or using orders). Like cautious move+prone (behind a parapet) and then pop-up for free to challenge the entire game table.
I have no problem with them just not getting Prone at all during the Impetuous order. Nice and simple. You can’t use it with that order and done. I like simple.
In particular because they already have to cancel their prone state at the beginning of this activation.
