    Observation of the Army Lists

    1.VH Is Not a Must-Have
There are frequent calls on social media to nerf VH.
In fact, neither the champions nor the runners-up across both tournaments used VH. Does this suggest that VH isn’t actually overpowered, but rather the subject of complaints from players who haven't learned how to counter it?

2.Midfield Defense Strength Dictates Tournament Success
Factions with stronger midfield defensive upgrades consistently achieved better results in the tournament, whereas factions with weaker midfield options were far more prone to losses. Factions like Morat, Starmada, and Steel Phalanx failed to perform well this time around. Having access to fewer Classified Information options also made their offensive strategies much more predictable.

I got a problem with the spreadsheet, the lists don't total 300pts or about that (I got 114 at some point). Are you guys having the same problems?
Happy for OSS! Not bad faction distribution, although I would have appreciated a more uniform spread. Once I'm able to see the lists I'll comment on units

I suppose the answer to that question is "Yes". The 1st rule of Infinity is: don't get too attached to your units... they WILL die, sometimes even horribly. So I'd say no, VH may require a price touch-up, but they're mostly ok as they are because it can be demonstrated that VH=Win is not an equation true all the time. Even more so when you consider that Axel won with OSS without the need for Tarkshya. We have a chef, mostly dedicated to very local (very heavy to digest), recipes that says "It's not needed, but it helps" for some ingredients... VHs are not like "ingredients" considering the cost in points, but for some they are a help. Mostly it's a self-fulfilling prophecy: I really wanted to have VHs, now that I have them I WILL WIN... and sometimes it works that way. But when the game gets tough and the tough guys come to play... VHs are not so determinant after all.

I tried it, and I’m having the same issue too.

Some individual VH units are indeed exceptionally strong offensively, but extending that argument to the entire VH category seems rather strange.

In my region, the players who complain about VH as a unit category tend to be those who play less frequently and lack experience with defensive play. Players who play regularly tend to focus their discussions on the specific VHs that pose particularly serious threats, such as Redeye, Go-Pod, Haytham, Zeybek, Skyhound, and Tarkshya.

On the other hand, there is almost no discussion about Feiquan or Firebat. They can basically be considered relatively low-threat units.

Another indication that VH may not actually be too powerful overall is that factions without VH units are still competitive, such as Varuna, Tartary, and VCA.

That said, I still support nerfing VH. But my reason isn't whether VH is actually too strong.

For new players, or players who aren't as technically skilled, learning how to deal with VH can be a significant burden. I don't want a new player to join the game, get absolutely destroyed because they don't know how to deal with VH, and then leave the community altogether.

To me it's more productive for the local communities to take care of growing the players rather than asking for something from "up high". The learning curve can be fun also and generally creates a challenging meta that becomes more and more fun as the players grow. If you ask or stand for a nerf then the result rarely pleases everybody and then other requests come and the system enters a cycle of modifications that may end up spiralling out.

You're talking about modifying 75% of a newly introduced unit (because you say nerf) and not the other 25%. What happens when all factions have VHs? Maybe a new nerf or a bonus? To what? Stats or points?

When you teach a club/group mate to deal with a problem he/she will learn a strategy (like midfield defences or specific counters to recurring opponent's strategies) that can be applied directly or scaled to other aspects of a match up or generalised to the whole of the game itself. I remember watching a video on countering typical vCA lists that had some recurring aspects like Charontid/Anatematic + Nourkias/Speculo with a support of cheap impetuous troops... it applies to any faction that has a "named Character and friends" type of lists which I later saw applied against me. Taught me a lot of lessons.

About the lists codes: can somebody do something about it?

I think part of the attraction of Infinity is the large number of threat vectors you need to balance your responses to, and I'd rather not have anything removed. Balance patches by all means, to encourage list diversity, but leave the threats in place.

I'd rather just make sure that newcomers are only exposed to a subset of the complexity during their first 5-10 games - ie teach mechanics like camo, hacking, hidden deployment, parachutist DZ, pheroware, guided missiles, TAGs (and man-shaped TAGs), flyers (or superjump in general) etc etc one at a time, and let the newcomer know what to expect before the game.

I'd say flyiers are just a bit too mobile and good at finding the perfect angle to engage 1v1s on favourable terms. Change their move to 6-4 and remove that +1" on their super jump. Also 'underperforming' flyiers should get a little something as compensation, while the rest should keep their points for time being to see if they require further adjustments.

I had an epiphany: the updates to Army that just occurred happened after the beginning of the Interplanetario and so the list codes published cannot be seen from the actual Army available. We need somebody from CB to use a previous version of Army to unpack the codes.
Can it be done? Some admin to push the request upwards please?

I am going to use this to show how the local community can actually turn the situation on its head:
Super jump (especially jep propulsion) is a powerful skill to relocate a trooper that has it. It does come with a big limitation in my opinion: along the whole trajectory the super jump trooper is completely exposed to pretty much anything that can fire. VHs also have no cover, which means no MODs not just for the whole trajectory, just in general. This means that placement of defensive units (not only snipers, TR bots and anything else that has a strong weapon to ARO) is key in neutralising a VH. A Missile Launcher in Hit mode (AP+Exp) is particularly lethal to something that ends up have 3 rolls at ARM2, a K1 sniper rifle has ARM=0 also, HRL in Hit mode has better PS and Continuous damage (a wrong roll there is tricky), plasma pushes double roll ARM+BTS so miss one and it's a hit, a total reaction HMG or even Thunderbolt can be quite the number of hits.

In other words: if you saturate you'll see that the number of damages can rump up pretty quickly. That is a rule that applies to any game in which dices are involved: more hits equals more saves which turns into more damage to get through. In this context the Super jump can easily become a 1-shot glass cannon and teaching/learning this lesson helps you not just in dealing with VHs, but any jump infantry.

Generally on tables which I like most, this trick wouldn't work very great (I love very busy tables with 3-4 storeys buildings). Though from what I've seen on pictures from tourneys, this is not the case (they rather look like "sniper's heaven" to me) so I have the feeling that what I just wrote is not the perfect, but definitely a good strategy. Also, factions with no VH have all the weapons I listed, either in the roster or as Mercs and when all factions have a VH the problem will become an all-around issue. If everybody can count on one gimmick, then it ends being a gimmick, it becomes general status. So learning to deal with it becomes a necessary skill.

Hey! First of all, thanks for adding me in the “good things” list haha.

This was my third Interplanetario and to be honest, I was planning on using ISS or White Banner, but in the end, I decided to go for Caledonia as a main Ariadna player and because, in all honesty…I wanted to have some laugh with my triple HMG Mormaer list.

I ended up with a 3-1-2 score, and that tie was against StorJaan, who ended up 8th if I’m not mistaken. I could have won the game but in my last turn with the rush and adrenaline, I forgot about Wallace’s impetuous order from Frenzy and that made me have one less order in the end that I could’ve used to score my last point and win, but even if changing the first order for the impetuous (I used his Lt order) wouldn’t have changed anything of the turn as I just berserked with that order (which I could also do with the impetuous) I didn’t want to make changes and kept the tie.

My first game was against Vanilla ALEPH, a really tough game against a good friend of mine that I managed to barely win thanks to doing my classified (4-3).

Second game was against StorJaan and I pressured him since his first order, but in the end, one of his Shaolins became an inmortal monster killing like 120 points of my list (including Wallace after two f2f rolls with me rolling 3 dices on 27s and failing twice to crit…) and his Lunah was something I could not deal with during the whole game (killed my Mormaer with her first order obv…). 6-6 tie.

Third game was against a german guy, really nice guy, with NCA in Akial, but the game was more or less decided in my turn one when one of my Cameronians was blessed by Lady Luck, and between dodges and armor rolls and him failing shots on 16s or 17s, managed to go b2b with his Aquila Lt and kill him turn 1. He couldn’t do much. 8-2 for me.

Fourth game was against Leirbag with Vanilla CA in Superiority and here is the first time I used my triple Mormaer list.
I think he had like 80 points alive by the end of the game. We could’ve tied or even I could have won, but there were two key moments for him. The first was Ko Dali shooting out of cover three on 14s vs my Isobel in cover on two on 15s…and I rolled like a 2 and a 19. Thanks to that, he dominated more quadrants one round.
The other moment was his Charontid basically winning two f2f rolls against my mormaer (pistol vs pistol but I had better odds) and then using the templates and surviving my free pistol shots without cover. Later on he also survivied 3 light shotguns to the face without cover. I think it was 4-2 in the end.

Fifth game against a colleague from our game club with White Banner and the game again depended on one roll. He put me in Retreat, but with two orders, if I killed his Liang Kai touching his console and in that same order, one of his Shaolins failed the dodge-3 roll, I would win. Unfortunately, the Shaolin passed the dodge-3 roll and even if managed to kill Liang Kai, he won I think it was 3-2.

Last game was against Hassassin, and it was a slaughter. I used again the triple Mormaer list, and by the end of turn 1 (I won initiative and went first) he had like 80 points alive and 0 chances of contesting me on anything, so he conceded as it was a clear 10-0.

Ended up 15th, really happy about the results and the experience, specially knowing I could have ended top 10 easily, but considering I went suffering from a kidney stone and having spent the thursday night at the hospital…I am really happy

Thank you @Achelon, very nice report. Considering the controversial topic at hand, can you relate your experience with VHs? As a Caledonian player you don't have VHs so I think it'd be interesting to understand how somebody can deal with them from a disadvantage point
