I’ve been working a lot on my terrain lately and thought I’d share what I’ve been up to. I’ve been working on terrain for Infinity and Bushido. I used some of the Bushido terrain when I play Yu Jing or Ikari but I haven’t played them in a while. Lately it’s O-12 and Starmada. Mostly I like to make things from found stuff but sometimes I’m just too lazy put in the work so sometimes I get kits and pre-printed. Or I want a design you just can’t find. Below is a picture of several things I’ve done recently. I bought some square and hexagon canvas frames. They are made from wood and fairly cheap. They add a little bit of height to things and just make the board more interesting. However, it adds a LOT of cover to a board. A troop can move all long an edge and gain cover most of the way. Some might have seen my homemade buildings before. They are the tan and grey buildings. They are made from plastic organizer boxes from Target. Sadly, they no longer make the lids but I was able to find one more. I just got a larger version of them and will be posting pics of how it looks soon. Unfortunately, I got a little too excited and primed it before thinking of putting some bits on the outside. Since they are so cheap, I may get another. Only $7 for a 12x9x7 box! I figure if it doesn’t work out, I have a good box for putting stuff in! Speaking of, I also store some of my small terrain inside the boxes too. I put a door from Antenocitis Workshop on it and windows I had a friend make with his laser cutter. I also picked up some more terrain from MAS at Adepticon this year. I liked it so much I got the last building my store had. They can no longer get MAS through their distributors. The thing I don’t like about pre-printed is that the edges are the bare burnt wood color. So I actually paint those edges as close as I can do the colors already there. You may have seen also the Buzz Lightyear toys I purchased. So far, they have been put to good use. But I haven’t had a chance to re-paint them. These were a fun experiment. They are cake tins. I designed some paper collars to go around it rather than painting them. Then I painted one of the lids with the same textured paint I used for my building roofs. Nice thing about them is able to put my small terrain inside. More to come!
Funny cake tins - good double use. I usualy use them for mini storage - because the are all magnetized.
Here’s a terrain update. Images are from my game with my Starmada vs. Torchlight. (Believe the hype of the Prime!) I got a big version of the small plastic boxes I’ve shown before, and you can see below. It’s pretty big. I think it’s starting to look great. I’m going to add a door on a side and some art on it for a sign. Below is an easy way to make scatter terrain. They are plastic boxes that D&D dice come in (on the right). It took forever to get a size right for the artwork on the inside. Below you can see the size and how they work as terrain. Here are some planters I made from again the same plastic bathroom trays from Target. Each one cost about $3 all together. The trays were $2 each, free foam on the inside, then some a foliage thing from the craft store was about $4. I have enough to make one more.
I haven't added to this in a long time! I got some CB Kaldstrom terrain at my FLGS auction. Like with pre-painted MDF terrain, the edges show and I don't like that. For MDF I paint it. But for the card board I did something different. I use Mod Podge mixed with grey paint to cover the edges. I used a foam make-up brush to put it on and it worked great. I could run it along the edges faster than trying to be super careful with a brush. If I did go over could clean it up with a rag. The mod podge has a slower dry time. Below I also added a "base" to the bottom so they stand up better. It's black mounting board with some grey paint slapped on to make it look like concrete.
Nicely done. A common trick for cardboard is a simple black marker, but I found that results may vary based on cardboard type/quality.
I noticed that issue with the dice cubes a while ago ... back in the N2 days - having noticed that those boxes came in at least 3 different sizes (to account for different sized dice (12mm v 16mm or polyhedrals).
The maker too. But yes some card board can "bleed". I did the mod-podge to "seal" the edge a bit. I also hit them with mat varnish.
I've since re-did the art inside. It took forever to get the size just right. But I think they look great.
