At the start of the year, I alluded to a secret new project for 2024 in my other painting threads. Today, I'm happy to finally announce it: It's Tohaa! Backstory Sometime early in 2022, a guy on Ebay sold his Spiral Corps starter for so cheap I couldn't resist. However, I quickly realized I wouldn't have time to paint them until two at least two years from them, so I sold the box again. Then, in 2023, @RobertShepherd won CanCon with his Tohaa, and his winning list reignited my wish to play them. More specifically, to play the exact same list as good old Rob (I only changed the name [for the worse]): Too Qeul For S(u)keul ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 9 1 3 SUKEUL Heavy Machine Gun, D-Charges / Pistol, Breaker Pistol(+1B), CC Weapon. (0 | 5) 6 SWC | 300 Points Open in Infinity Army Coincidentally, at the same time, a friend of mine who paints much better than me wanted to sell his Tohaa collection, of which a couple models were already half painted and a few more fully so. So I bought his collection. The twist: He had started to paint them in the official Spiral Corps color scheme (with one exception). And since I wasn't going to repaint something that was already perfect, for the first time since I started painting Infinity, I found myself painting an official studio scheme. To show you what level of painting I had to compete with, let's start with the models I got from him fully painted. It's basically studio level quality: Rasail (Spitfire) – painted by adam_ferrum Draal (Shock Marksman Rifle) – painted by adam_ferrum Kotail (Spitfire) – painted by adam_ferrum The Kotail was apparently painted some time before the others, hence the older Tohaa scheme, but oh my, look at that skill level! I knew I wasn't able to reproduce this, but I also knew I might get close. Luckily, Adam had also given me two almost-finished models to practice on: A Sukeul with K1 Combi, and the Kosuil with BSG and Panzerfaust. These were missing only the black metal parts, the weapons, the holsters, the mint green buckles, and the hair on the Sukeul. Here's what they look like finished: Sukeul (K1 Combi) – 90% painted by adam_ferrum Kosuil (BSG) – 90% painted by adam_ferrum Now that you know what I have to aspire to, here's my first attempt at painting as well as Adam whil copying the official Corvus Belli scheme: Taagma Schemer (Viral Sniper Rifle) – painted by me Now, since this Taagma will be my Nikoul proxy for the list shown above, I needed a 40mm base for him. I made one out of acrylic paste and VJ Diorama FX Ground Texture and added magnets to fix the model in place: Since we're talking Taagma, let me show you the second one as well. She will stand in as my Diplomatic Delegate: Taagma (Breaker Combi) – painted by me That's it for now. I've painted most of the list already, so you'll see more Tohaa these coming days :)
Oh boy, these are gorgeous. Your buddy ist really skilled. The Rasail is just perfect (one of my favourite minis in all of Infinity). But it is so cool to see Tohaa from you. I am looking forward to see the Rest of the army. Don't be so hard to yourself. Your paintjobs are super awesome and, at least for me, a huge inspiration. Hell your Sith-RTF almost got me into Haqqislam. Wish i could like it more than once.
Good lord these paint jobs are awesome. You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. You are very skilled and I'd say you've successfully matched your friend's style. Just out of curiosity, how long does it take your friend to paint one mini? How long does it take you?
Thank you! Thank you! I'm only pointing out the facts though – he is objectively better than me. But you've also hit the right spot: He spends at least twice the amount of time on a mini as me. I try to not spend more than 4-5 hours on a mini after I'm done with basing and airbrushing. For him, I know it's 8-12. Haha, thank you for those kind words! Sad to hear it was only enough to almost get you into Haqq :P What made you decide against it in the end? Since you were asking for the rest of the army: Here's some more :) If you play Tohaa, you need Taqeuls. Since there are no official models (although it can be argued the regular Hatail was supposed to be a Taqeul before release – everything fits, the Symbioarmor, the Medium Infantry armor plates, the weapon options...), everyone gets to choose their favorite proxies. Mine are the two Hatails. So here they are: Spiral Corps Army Box Preorder Bonus Hatail (Spitfire) / Taqeul proxy Regular Release Hatail / Taqeul Proxy
Your "Taqeuls" are very nice. How do you manage to have that output in such short time? The Hatail minis are perfect for them. The inability to finish more than 1-2 minis a month and my huge pile of shame. But that does not mean my pile is partially made of Haqqislam packs/blisters. Keep it up. I am very excited.
By painting every day if I can :) I understand. I'm hellbent on finishing my backlog until the kid arrives next month, but I don't think it's possible. It's still 25 minis, including two wolves and two S6 TAGs... But at least I'm done with my Tohaa :D Here are six more, the Kaeltar and their Symbiomates/bombs: Kaeltar (Light Shitgun) Kaeltar (Combi Rifle) Symbiomates & Symbiobombs Complete box
Thank you. The turquoise recipe (not just for the jackets) is: Base: VMC Periscopes Highlight: VMC Park Green Flat Highlight: VGC Foul Green Edge Highlights: VGC Foul Green + Ice Yellow Speaking about teal: It's not the same recipe (the base color is VGC Jade Green), but here's another teal fella. He's on a 55mm base because he's my Motorized Bounty Hunter, and I painted him like the other Symbiobeast from the boxart:
Great job as usual. If I may, I'd like to mention that Periscope is not part of the VMC range per se, but from the panzer aces range. It may be a detail but around here the range is only available in a few specific shops country wide. It's on my shopping list for years now and it's very frustrating that the only option is to do a specific online order just for one ref
The relationship between Prince August and Vallejo is very enigmatic (especially when Vallejo suddenly starts going through Legion Distribution to sell directly separately in despite their contract) but Panzer Aces are well distributed in France: https://www.prince-august.net/?s=panzer+aces Usually it's by bundle, but a store that distributes PA can ask PA to send only specific pots, this is the way I got my pots or you can write a mail directly.
@Koin-Koin thanks for the catch, you're right, it's from the panzer aces series. Don't you guys ever order paints from online stores though? I don't think I've bought more than three bottles of paint from a local store. I understand if you want to support your LFGS, but waiting years for a bottle of paint that you can order online and have delivered three says later? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Actually there's one local store in Paris that store Panzer Aces but unfortunately each time I went to it Periscope was out of stock (I suspect the range not to be bought enough to get a refill) and before the health crisis this store was about to move far away but I learnt this week that it never did so maybe I finally get my hand on it. Beside that, yes as a general rule I tend to choose local store before online one except when the availability and/or price makes sense. In the case of paint, I regulary by set online like GWS ones (also because they're not that easy to find in local stores) for instance. But I like to be able to just go out and get back with the coupple of bottle I miss without having to wait one week foe them. That's a call and I own it, not problem on that. The periscope case is really frustrating as it is the only ref from this range in AG's recipes and I missed it fro several projects (but I can deal with that and use another paint). @Wizzy I know that PA has an historical white brand deal for decade with VA but apprently they never rebranded this specific range (apprently only one store in France get it from them, the others get it from VA). Anyway, sorry for hijacking the thread. My point was only to highlite the potential random availability of some ref. in various area.
I live in Canada, so buying anything online usually means a hefty delivery or import fee. I suppose there's always Amazon, but I choose not to support their business practice not to mention carbon footprint. Anyway, let's get back to looking at your models
Interesting. Thanks for all the input, guys. Here in Germany it's pretty easy to get anything you like from one of the many well-equipped online stores. I don't feel bad about it either, since my local hobby store here in Munich doesn't carry any Vallejo at all. Right you are, sir. Here's my Liberto proxy, the SMG Helot. Since I am painting studio schemes on this project, I decided to paint him in the official scheme as well:
Thanks! They're actually quite easy to make. Just use your favorite modelling medium to create the vines on the base, then put some structure paint on top :) We're nearing the end of the project already. Every Tohaa list needs Makaul, but since they're oop, I needed proxies for them as well. I settled on the Igao. Amazing sculpts with enough CC vibes and eclipse grenades on their belts to get the idea across. Translating the Spiral Corps colors onto these was especially fun, and I think these turned out as some of the paintjobs I ever did: CCW Igao / Makaul Proxy Combi Rifle Igao / Makaul Proxy
Every Tohaa list needs at least one Chaksa... but not Longarms. I don't like the old Chaksa models, however, so even my Chaksa Auxiliar is a proxy. I was surprised at how small these models were. The boxart gave the impression that they're quite bulky, almost like HI, but they're actually pretty tiny:
