I was thinking about what it is that YJ needs to be a bit more competitive and what things I always seems to have troubles on. For me it’s good specialists. Mainly good cheap specialists. We have some good but not cheap. Just for the hell of it I compiled all the specialists for each faction under 24pts. Surprisingly, it's Not Nomads that have the most (but it's still a lot). But you can see how Yu Jing has the least number of cheap specialists. I'd like them to eventually add a few more. Especially good ones. By good I mean things like camo, forward deployment, climb+, etc. The lists were just every single specialist. Not taking into account things like AVA or that some have special skills and equipment. An interesting topic. I guess the first question is, Does Yujing have a problem completing the mission or securing classifieds? From there we could discuss if there is a need for cheap specialists over quality specialists.
If I was going to shore up one area that as a whole the faction lacks options in is direct MSV counter tech. Regardless of what form it takes, more Albedo, Eclipse, White Noise etc. Personally I would like to see a proliferation of Albedo profiles or Tinbots. It's something that hasn't really been explored too much in general in the game and it'd be nice to see more of it, particularly in say a sectorial like White Banner.
That all kanren are specialists and do have deployables would be a good start. A HD+ for white noise. More E/M mines on for example guilang. Tian gou that can forward deploy if they don't link, some models with frenzy, lookin at you Wu Ming and Hulang. Something for the Crane Agent to get him out of the Cabinet and on the table. Dodge +3, cc+1 burst, breaker spitfire and or a pointsdrop.
Like I said it's from my own problems and experience. For me it's been access to specialists to get things done. Only one Doctor in YJ. ISS is both our single Doctor AND Engineer. You loose them you are screwed. Also expensive. We also don't have many medics. Most of our forward deployed specialists are expensive too. The cheapest starting at 24pts. I'd like something like a Moran or Seed Soldier price. Personally from my experience and this is important as I come from a pure Invincibles/ White Banner player perspective, I felt more the lack of Killer hackers, especially in Invincibles than anything else, I do not care that much about doctors because there are enouph (fireteam) paramedics and high PH to be alleviated.
Vanilla YJ is already very strong, and doesn't really suffer for lack of anything in particular at the moment. White Banner is fine. ISS needs a few profile updates to some notable weak/outdated profiles (Sun Tze, Bao, Wu Ming, Cranes). Maybe a proper skirmisher. Invincible Army needs access to the Long Ya and Haidao being able to join a pure team.
What we need is a playable Sun Tzu. He is the guy who made me start playing YJ, and 5 years later I still have no idea how to use him effectively. He either needs a better gun, or to drop the total immunity for a pont cost decrease. Or something else to make him playable, a Veteran status or ECM? Idk. And maybe a linkable medic for the secotrials, but it seems to me that us having just one medic a faction identity issue - the equivalent of PanO not having smoke. Other than that... I guess we could always use one or two types of HI more :-P
Given that yu-jing relies a lot on heavy infantries for many tasks, I'd like to see more ways to see us lean more heavily on hacking counter tactics and gear. More capable killer hackers, veteran sprinkled here and there, anti-hacker ECM and what not.
I recently returned to YJ for a league after a decent break. Having some experience with Haqq I realized my playstyle wasn't suited for YJ, so I completly changed the way I build and play YJ for the league. And oh boy, going from utility/toolbox style to: go first if able, and apply Su Jian+MBH duo with Hac Tao or Knauf clearing the way felt STRONG. Also hard Aro is something I started to use. Stacking Hundun with Luna, maybe Long Ya and/or Hac Tao was good, and this trap won me 1 game on its own. At the end I lost 1 game, but somehow managed to win the league by 1 TP. YJ feels strong, sure we miss some toys, and we pay premium for many units but there are many powerfull and quite unique troops here that we can abuse. But if I had to make a wishlist: KHD with better trinity, be it AP, +2 damage or +1burst (all of those exist alteady). Every possible unit type but HI, afaik we only need bike for that goal. (And smoke, 6-2move, and impet on hualng for him to be a true WB). IA exclusive HI doctor, maybe even healing 2Wounds. Ninja with Smoke. All Kanren with minelayer and either MTs or mines. Buff Combat Jump Explode to at least 13dam Shock ammo. Daofei BSG becomes specialist, preferably Engineer. Edit: 1 very overpriced unit with Exlipse or White Noise.
I would not count EVO REMs because they are only a last resort specialist. Maybe other people have more luck with them, but I remember only one game (maybe it was N3) were my EVO had activated an objectiv. Also mecenarys are not good for comparsion, because most of them are in all human-like vanilla factions. This! Yu Jing #1 but forgot to buy a few HD+ ... but it seems that Pan O also lacks this device. Easy. Just put Paravati in. ISS has already a bunch of Aleph allies, why not IA? An actual HI would be more stylsih, but Parvati feels like HI - ingame it would be clever to use a LI for that purpose. That would be cool and stylish, but I guess there is a reason that they not get smokes. ... Yu Jing could use some veteran troops.
Hacking device plus is a rare equipment out of the 42 possible army list entries only 12 have access to it and for all it is sprinkled among few and elite units usually only one per list.
Yu jing does have a lot of elite troops and i guess there is at least one of those elite troops where such a rare device would be fitting.
By few and elite I mean mostly EI and AI aspects, and troops that are considered the most elite cyber warfare troops of the Human Sphere, I do not think that most factions should have access to such gear, though theoretically speaking a really specialized unit in ISS could potentially be on the same level as Cyberghosts and Interventors, but I would not really like to see that.
I don't generally agree that looking at numbers is a good way to decide what is needed and what is not. It only takes one good unit and a faction can become the Best at that thing. Just look at heavy infantry and what happened when CB decided to make Nomad and Haqq heavy infantry no longer suck. Or look at how Haqq is increasingly having to take steps back from the Doctoring throne as Nomad and Aleph Doctor+ units come with increasing bling. So what does Yu Jing need? Nothing. Mainly Vanilla Yu Jing needs some good loadouts to be sectorial only. Not you, Haidao CoC. The sectorials, though. IA needs Haidao be less of a detriment in fireteams. IA needs Long Ya IA needs Yan Huo to be overhauled slightly instead of being big, slow, Shang-Ji* IA needs Zhencha to be minelayers IA needs more REM integration** IA needs good light infantry hacking. Could I suggest Mongolian bikers? IA needs Beasthunters or a similar unit. IA needs Zuyong to have a grenade launcher IA needs an overhaul to be honest. ISS needs Bao Troops BSG to have KHDs ISS needs Cranes to be the impetuous murder assholes they are in the fluff. ISS needs Kanren to have something good to impersonate or to become real Impersonation-2 units. ISS needs Sophotect to be able to join Aleph Support fireteams. ISS wants Long Ya ISS wants D-Charges on Pheasants ISS wants Kunai to git gud at shooting WB wants Kunai to git gud at shooting so that they are a serious alternative to Hundun WB wants Blue Wolf Lieutenant option. WB wants Jammers to stop being disposable. * I mean to stop limiting their capabilities so they can be shoehorned into fireteams without breaking design norms regarding max burst on HMG or ML equivalents (those norms have been tossed in a ditch anyway) ** Where's the new heavy weapons Yaokong, huh!? Nah. I think you're trying to justify something that has no justification. This is entirely arbitrary. Didn't Jazz even build her own HD+? Anyway, PanO and Yu Jing totally could field these devices and they even have some hacking capabilities that Nomads, Aleph and O-12 definitely does not that isn't reflected on the table. PanO and Yu Jing don't have HD+ by design. It's as arbitrary as PanO considering smoke obsolete when it definitely is not. If CB does decide to do away with this particular arbitrary limitation (as they have with a number of things for other factions), then I hope Hac Tao is first in line for such a device among Yu Jing. They'd still live in the shadows of the HMG unless NCO moved up to base statline, but still...
I disagree each Hacking Device plus has been justified to be issued either to troops that are Aspects of the two AIs or are elite cyber combat experts. the only two odd ones are Jazz who was selected to be the hacker in an expedition tot he CA space so she should be that good Victor Messer who is something similar and Umbra who are portrayed as been the best (and cruelest) at whatever they do so I think they are justified having one despite not been specifically mentioned as been primarily an elite Cyber Combat unit. Of course I would love to see Smoke in PanO and I have to remind he had one, quite expensive and reliable smoke in father knights and that experiment went that well it was removed.
I think you're stretching the term "justified" a bit beyond breaking. While I didn't feel like reading up on the details of gender neutral bathrooms, as if that's something special, and so on, I did read through a bunch of unit blurbs. Most units managed to "justify" the HD+ a bit worse than Barids do, typically the unit blurbs tend to mention that the unit is a Cyberwarfare specialist with lots of extra combat training (if they can manage "lots" of extra training when they die particularly young according to the Custodier blurbs). What stands out are the Cyberghosts ("Hey ChatGPT, can you give me a unit description of 1000 words for a cyberpunk cop and make it as generic and bland as possible") and Mary Troubles, who does manage to justify it with flying colours... except Mary hasn't got HD+. Now, I realise that it is a bit hypocritical when I don't feel I have the time or patience to read the full lore of each faction and only refer to unit blurbs, and then refer to some much deeper lore about the wider Hexahedron and Yanjing struggles. Just saying, though, using the human units that have HD+ to set the bar, then Pheasants, Hac Tao, and Cranes already clear the bar and the hypothetical Mongolian biker nomad clears it cum laude. But with that said; HD+ is not needed. HD+ is what other factions need to fight Yu Jing and PanO. Or Atalanta. F.
Well, if you had read the fluff then you would have read that Mary problems is no match for Interventors and it was one the driving forces that pushed her to be hired, of course the only thing she is shy of to have a HD+ is white noise. But yes, if we go back to the same discussion that has been discussed a lot lately, background justifies a lot of things some units have, and no none of the units you mention are units that would be experts to have such devices, as I said a new unit dedicated to cyber crime would fit the ISS and could justify having an HD+.

Would be nice also deployable repeaters would not be bad That could be said for almost all factions Why would Invincibles need more light Infantry? Why would Invincibles need something like that? ? I guess any fireteam capable unit would like to have one of those, but most that had it, and there were a lot of them, and most of them got culled down for a reason. Overhaul is a bit much I think, its a good sectorial, lack of smoke and only one KHD in a hacking vulnerable unit that fills many roles (including the only non rem MSV) are an issue, some units could do with a tweak here and there but complete overhaul is a bit drastic. They do not offer the same tactical niches but now that you mention it, I would love to see Hundun sniper to get something to be more desirable than the other two options. I guess? I mean I still have not figured out a satisfactory way to play them, love the model and the unit, but it has not clicked for me, I wish Chief Zeong was a wildcard here or they could form a duo with a repeater. Nobody really wants that, nobody...
