I was excited for video and after I watched it the amount of disappointment was significant. This is what you lead with? The blandest squat stormcast you could manage? I really wish you guys would lean into what makes your world special and unique and not just another DnD clone.
In fantasy is all invented and done before somewhere. The fastest you accept it, the better for you. If you risk too much with the desings, some people won't like. If you made clonical fantasy, some people wont like. (but will be easier to sell. and if you have quality high enough, make sells from serving as proxy for other games.) you won't be able to please both sides
The land is scourged by the Fat Man in the Little Cloak To arms! You will serve in the van, down by the river, and win glory
This is quickly becoming as exciting as this cola can. "Generic" seems to be the word of this release. Shame about Hoopoe, she seems to be about the only genuine and fun part of it so far.
No. You can have an inventive and interesting new fantasy. Sadly, so far WarCrow isn't one. But, I'm not even making that point. This is a new universe, and you go with a bland, forgettable dwarf miniature with the most overdone pose ever? It's just not a good way to get people in. Even a bad mini would get people interested (if only to see what happens). I want this to succeed, but so far it looks very forgettable.
well, show me that inventive never seen before and if someone here cant find a resemblance to something somewhere. Fantasy, nowadays, is, by definition, bland. (And dont get me wrong. Give me all that "we are not Bretonia" knightly humans, the 1000th iteration of nature lover elves, savage uncivilized orcs... Im totally ok with that. I dont want risks.)
If its not a new or particularly interesting take, why would anyone care about it then? If you're throwing world building out the door, might as well play one page rules, frost grave, or a bunch of other IP agnostic games. If I had resources sunk into an existing IP range, why risk changing systems for something that's not noticeably different? Why bother to put skin on a rules system, if the skin is generic?
Mind you, that's not just my thoughts on Warcow, but pretty much any game that drops. Miniature agnostic is completely viable, convince me why your IP is better.
Truth be told, GloomHaven has very interesting races and designs. Still, I'm not going to complain about Warcrow being "boring" or "bland" until I've seen more of the miniatures and the fluff. That being said... wasn't half of this forum complaining just a couple days ago about "oversexualized" models, boob armour, and such? Well, let's see how this new model fares against the list of complaints: - No boob armour - No wasp waist - No high heels - No miniaturized weapon Looks like this is what people was asking for.
Yeah, but do the shouters about that stuff speak for the community? Do I want all pinup models? No, do I want some, yeah. Variety is good. Lots of people wanted the changes in n4, but not all. Confrontation thought the world wanted unit based prepainted plastic....I see where they are these days. Its a tough road to decide what will really move in the market place. I don't think anyone should assume that what they did yesterday will be enough to keep people around tomorrow though. There was a time when I had thousands of dollars in GW. And then I didn't. Sometimes people change, sometimes the product on offer isn't worth the sunk cost to stay in.
Generic or not generic I do not really care, so long the Game Universe will be consistant and well made. . . For a purely visual appeal, the Sharp Angular "Scales" of the Armour are original enough for Me, and also the Spike-Hammer is a good blend; main head is good enough for "Runic Crystal" of High Fantasy Classic while those "Vial Gewgaws" in the head attachement could be done as Dark Age Alchemical Parts or some far more advanced "Steampunk Tesla-Tech". . . Personally I think that that Miniature could be painted in very starkly different styles; could be a Tolkenian Viking Dvergar, all Brass and Gold, or could be painted as a Advanced "Dieselpunk Fantasy" Techno-Warrior, maybe with neon glows in selected places and the metallic parts highlighted as "Special Alloys". . . But could be just My preference; is just the first Miniature detailedly shown, let's expect some further proofs of concept. . . . ..
I have been thinking a lot about GloomHaven when there were all the initial complaints about how tired all the fantasy troupes are. While I have not played it, it does seem like it could be difficult to expand beyond a board game where these unique races and designs were not confined to a board game role, and would need to be expanded into a full army with varying roles to flesh out the faction. Wrath of Kings was a skirmish game that had some more unique faction designs, (though even it relied on some fantasy troupes like the Vampire/Werewolf factions), but it seems to be dead at this point. There are a number of factors that lead to it being put on a seemingly endless hiatus, distribution, availability, slow releases, and the quality of the PVC minis from the initial Kickstarter, (these made the the initial run of Aristeia! minis look like master pieces in comparison). However, I would expect the uniqueness of the setting and factions made it more difficult to attract new players because they were so unrecognizable, and made it so there was less of a side market for the minis as RPG characters.
So... Aristeia with D8's? Well, I suppose D6 does not provide enough variety. Gotta refrain the judgement until I see a demo game. Even bland unit designs might be fine if the game itself is solid. (Especially when its Chinese PVC)
So far it looks very safe bet territory. Appeal to the generic fantasy. Is it female? I haven't watched the video yet. But it's pretty hard to tell.
Nobody talks about Godzilla walking in front of a lighthouse in one of the sketches? ^^ According to the sketches, there will be some classic knight and a kind of van hellsing from the middle age. The fog will be a terrain element that will impact the dungeon crawler and the wargame, from what I understand. Here is an extraction of the images.
