I have been out of infinity for a while and I am just thinking of returning. I was going through the Army app and kept finding FTO after some unit names. I have looked at the rules PDF and the Annex and even the Wiki but I cannot find anything that says what this is referring to.

FTO = Fireteam Option. Its the profile you will find in Fireteams.

I assume its FireTeam Operative or some such.
Its just something they put on the profile name to denote which one is allowed to join fireteams.

Thank you, I thought it was something to do with Fireteams but I could not find it defined anywhere.

It’s been used off and on since latter N3 for designating particular profiles for fireteam compatibility but they’ve never been good about formally defining it. Now that it’s actually referenced by the fireteam rules (rather than being in various freeform notes and restrictions) it should really be formally defined.

I’m sorry guys, I have another one. What +3 does the Journalist L1 give you? And why are there unit designations and skills that are listed in the official Army builder that do not seem to be mentioned in the rulebook, rule annex, FAQs or wiki???

Journalist is only relevant if you're running the campaign system, which hasn't been updated yet for N4. It's to one of the rolls after a mission to see what kinds of rewards/penalties you get.

Thanks Toadchild, I just wonder how a new player is supposed to know these things.

It is in the profile names, so it doesn't really *need* a definition, per se.
    upload_2022-3-30_10-33-17.png

It's a reference that has meaning where the meaning is needed, but otherwise is irrelevant. Like the designations; Light Infantry, Medium Infantry, Skirmishers, Warbands, Line Troops, Specialist troops, etc etc.

  11. Here we have another example of arcane knowledge that either you are a veteran of the game and you know it because it was once said in the past or there is no way to know it.

The "Journalist" rule was in the "Campaign Paradiso" book for N2; the campaign rules were updated at the end of N3 in the "Daedalus' Fall" book, but it seems someone forgot to include the rule in the new book... so that rule doesn't exist in either N3 or N4.

How is a new player supposed to know what FTO means. Literally in this thread you have somebody asking.

Truth be told, it is explained in the new rules annex. The problem is that only until you've read the whole N4 rules and the rules annex you find about it.

    Per the post below yours - it is literally in the rules;
    upload_2022-3-31_15-1-14.png

Moreover - as stated, FTO isn't a rule and has no meaning in and of itself. It is a designation on the profile name that corresponds to the Fireteam organisation chart. It is literally the name of the profile being called out as linkable.

If you're not using Fireteams, it isn't relevant. If you haven't read the Annex, you're not using Fireteams... Because you don't know what they are. The game is functional without Fireteams, as are the FTO profiles.

EDIT - Unnecessary side note - removed

Maybe a silly question, but is there something blocking you from taking an FTO profile and not use it in a fireteam?
Also, are you allowed to take an FTO profile in Vanilla?
    Thanks

Nope. You're free as a bird (or a crow... a WarCrow!)

If they are listed in the unit entry, they are legal. There are very few profiles allowed only to Sectorials

AFAIK nothing there to stop you. Just like taking any other Fireteam-eglible trooper and running them on their own rather than in a Fireteam.

If the Army Builder allows a given FTO option in a vanilla army list, you can (especially given Vanillas are now allowed some Duo Fireteams)

    Thanks to you two.

I didn't check thoroughly but I can see at least a few cases where it would make total sense to take the FTO option. Aida Swanson, for example, has an FTO profile in Combined Army which is 3 pts/0.5SWC cheaper than the regular one, just by losing the +1B on its SMG. Which makes her a 0 SWC Viral Minelayer with FD. Nice.
Could also make sense for Jazz if you're really starved for points, even though I can't see a reason not to take that cheap adorable pain-in-the-ass Billy :)
