I'm gonna answer your question, with the caveat that I think it's the kind of question that begets pointless discussions: I don't care if Vanguards have BS11, PH12, WIP13 and ARM1. I would gladly pay 10 points for a vanguard with that statline and an SMG. if they were BS12 and had a base cost of 12, I'd be also fine with it. At 14 points, I'm pretty much not chosing vanguard over daturazi, ever. In fact, I'm genuinely concerned about daturazi in this remake. Because daturazi are GOOD. They don't need to have anything done with them and I'm pretty sure they will not stay as they are in the near future.
I believe he was looking at the current statline with the SMG points discount compared to a combi. All the artwork so far shows combis though, so probably a hoax "leak"

Possibly a "hoax" but CB has made plenty of misleading stuff in the past. The conjecture about using SMGs to lower their cost would be enough because there was always something to say about Vanguard. I've often wondered what there is to be done about line troops so that they arent just order generators but part of the toolkit. A suppressing vanguard SMG actually seems really good. But what if they got SMGs and stayed 14 points, what other buffs might they get, right...

One thing nobody mentioned yet. That female morat unit weapon looks like Anyat's K1 combi rifle. So if it is Zerat equivalent it is possible their profile is different or we will have new unit armed with K1 combis. Imho it is interesting to see more special ammo weapons in MAF.
If the Unidron Batroids can have it, why not Vanguard? A straight up swap for their "standard" Combis to K1, especially if costs remains static or only minimally increased, would likely make them far more attractive.
I suck at weapon spotting. But this is a cool idea. If we get zerats with K1 combis it will make them a lot more threatening. Just like how the Tyrok punches really hard with her T2 weapon. I dig it.
It seems somewhat silly for any CA/EI trooper to not have at least one kind of "exotic" weapon on their profile. If SEF's "line" trooper can all have at least Zappers, and the Unidrons have K1 Combis or Plasma Carbines, something exotic and punishing on MAF troops makes sense. Perhaps, if CB doesn't want to expand the availability of K1, LFLs as standard could be good. And no, I personally don't count every MAF trooper having a Heavy Pistol as equivalent.
I am hoping the Tyrok is pointing that T2 weapons and hopefully breaker will become more common to MAF. It would make them stand out. While I can see Daturazi getting a Mutt (Haqqislam) like nerf and not be as streamlined, I hope they make Vanguard into a reasonable alternative.
I really, really hope they don't touch daturazi at all. Perhaps give them haris and/or duo and that's it. As they are right now they're one of the few MAF units that always performs within expectations and that I feel are perfectly representative of what an elite, expensive warband should be. Much like the hungries, I feel like any changes to what they are right now might make them less interesting.
