I've started my own table/terrain project for my Haqqislam army: a (low) crater that can be the site of all manner of settlements/lab/factories etc. The idea is to have a low impact terrain setup that can be filled with all kinds of buildings (I have Mass Effect 3 modular colony buildings in mind).

I've made it somewhat modular, by having three parts that can make up the three table sizes of N4 and can be configured as having a crater or a central ridge.

Nice I guess the important thing is to make sure there’s no LOF from one side to the other due to the height of the crater

Looks like a death trap. The final resting place for a great many soldiers and their bleached bones.

Guys, take into account that this is just the beginning of the board, there's no buildings yet, much less scatter

I like it. That said, some questions:

    The crater’s edge is climbable?
If it is not, will you add stairs or ladders to reach the edge?
What is that winged thing in the fourth pic?

Thanks, guys! I agree that the center needs some heavy and high cover to keep the thing from becoming a death trap. :D

The edge will be climbable (it's less than S2 in height), but I've also added some stairs and ramps.

That winged thing is a "Spacehawk" toy starship, which I got cheap. The plan is to paint it up nicely to be a possible center piece for the baord.

The basic color alone looked very dark but with the highlighting the table looks great.

Would be neat to make a board like this with space ship parts, as an impact crater/ crash site. A couple prefab buildings maybe for something to stand on and shoot.

Yes, I'll admit of thinking about tearing my "Spacehawk" apart and convert it into a multipart wreck. But I think that's something for the future. Currently I'm working on some scatter terrain and an objective room.

Nah, leave the ship as is, too nice to smash it. Just some paint and keep it.

Then build the wreck as parts of a huge ship, with some card for hull and inner ribs, scattered all over the place and even "nailed" into the ground. One or two companies sell MDF kits showing that exactly.

Least effort policy: easier to build scrap and rubble that can look pretty bad, than to build a complex, mechanical thing when already done for you.

looks also like a mine, that could be another option, add some heavy machinery and maybe some piles of dirt or something

Yeah stuff like that. Imagine there is a site where something big is being digged, send the armed forces to secure the load

Great ideas folks, thank you very much! For now I'm building some papercraft buildings for a small colony or outpost, but I think I'll eventually replace that with better (and more durable) stuff.
