Just like here where the opposition PR Manager (i refuse to call IT leader) claimed the government kept secret a report on the risks of Coronavirus in february.
Report handed to the government by a member of the health department of a region.
Do you need to be explained which party guide that region?

To be honest, thats a standard answer straight out of the book for politicians, management and anyone else trying to avoid responisbility.

Tomorrow, my unit will be visited by our factory manager and the major of the small city, with entourage.
As i cant be forced to take a day off i have been told to not be seen in the 2 hours when they walk around.
Seems to be the problem with the lack of my brain to mouth filter.

We've had similar issues when our state premier deflected questions about time and cost-overruns in PT infrastructure with "You'd need to ask the Transport minister about those ..." even though SHE was THE Transport minister who oversaw the contracts for those issues and knew that there was no way in hell that those completion dates were in any way realistic.

I'm very wary of this heading down the politics rabbit hole...

Sorry for pushing it this way. I didn't intend to go on specific details and stay at a generic level.
Still your concern is fair and we should not fall in the political sides argument gap.

Telling my boss in front of other people i am already acustomed to being disappointed by superiors wasnt such a bad idea.
Factory Manager came to my workplace interested in what my hob is and how i am doing my job.
Watching my supervisor and unit manager in cold sweet while the factory manager talks to me was priceless.

So this was a fun one that just recently got resolved.

I work for a company that makes parts for military aircraft and, as a quality engineer, I need to be able to access customer prints and specs. Since this is not generally available information, I need to use customer-authorized 2FA which is required to be installed on a special removable drive that can only be used with my work computer. My identity proofing is only good for three years, and must be re-done regularly. Normally this isn't a problem.

Abnormally, my company has split from its original parent corporation so we all have new e-mail domains. Since my 2FA is attached to my e-mail address, there were additional hoops to jump through so that we could change the e-mail address connected to my account. I had to completely revoke my ability to do the 2FA in order to move forward with this process. My new identity proofing was good for one month, during which time I had to complete the download or re-purchase a new identity proofing.

In the course of the previous few years, our corporate IT wizards decided that, for security's sake, we should not be allowed to download to removable drives at all. I had to apply for an exception, which took a week or two to confirm. Once I get the exception, I attempt the download. Doesn't work. I tag IT - "fix this." IT says "you can't install the program, an admin must do it."

New problem...for some reason, our corporate IT wizards also decided that admin accounts should not be allowed to access the internet as a whole. Just intranet. So the Admin cannot download the required files in order to install them while logged into my computer. I tagged the Identity Proofing folks to see if there was a way to download it to my PC and bypass the removable drive. Nope. If we want to do business with our customers, we need to figure this out.

My co-workers thought it was hilarious that our internal security measures were making it impossible for me to do the required external security measures.

IT finally found a way to get my 2FA in line with a single day left on my Identity Proofing. Now I have two co-workers that have to do the same thing I did. Fortunately, I blazed the trail for them.

I won't go into the details about why such IT rules makes sense from a security PoV but I can tell you that they are best practices especially in such a sensitive activity like yours.
I may be wrong but if I understand properly what happened here is (I'm not defending an IT wizard just because I could be considered as one myself):
    - download can be done but not by an admin account (normal)
    - installation can only be done by an admin account
Normally it's fine as a non admin account is used for downloading, then an admin can be used for installation once security checked have been performed on the downloaded component.
Apparently, the real issue is: download and installation should be performed at the same time making the previous process a paradox.
And that's where the real WTF lie: the security component has been developed without taking such best practices into considerations.

I don't want to blame developers in general but I've seen so many of them providing thing requiring full admin access just because they don't know how to do it without... Some just have no general knowledge about how systems work or network competencies when they're supposed to make client/server related things...

But yes, sometime (most of time ?) when we don't know what's on the other side of the curtain, it really looks paradoxical.*

*I include myself in this general statement ;)

Yeah, the download system also installs at the same time. Nothing we could do about that internally and nothing that would be done about it externally as it was considered necessary.

But I think we agree...the real way to have dealt with this was to have a process set up to allow this to happen. They actually had to create one on the fly. Sometimes you just don't know what problems you'll run in to until you run into them.

It was frustrating in the moment, but it's funny now :)

It's been some time now, but I need to share it with you guys.
I had a video conf meeting during the global lockdown with a colleague (that I obviously blurred for the screenshot) - let's say he didn't look very professional/serious.

Well, he was based in Germany. And let me say that he wasn't known only for his CS skills when visiting us in France.
The fact that our premises is litterraly one street close to a couple of bars helped him demonstrate his others skills. Too bad we had to work the afternoons too.

We're out of Tropical Storm/Hurricane names for the Atlantic this year, we're now up to Gamma, and there are still two months left of hurricane season!

I remember a guy who used to post in one of the wargaming groups on Facebook.
You'd often see part of his collection of hentai figurines in the background of any pictures.

Actually you're right (with others). The more I look at this picture, the more I see myself & my miniatures in it. :D
