    @Brokenwolf

I hear you. I have played N3 for years.

If you watch the trailer/demo and the previous demo videos for the Operation X boxed sets, they are identical. So is this just a reskin, with new packaging, to create a system that uses the "beginner" box sets rules(modified) to try an create a ground swell of new players before N4 drops? Which is fine and understandable...it's just that if that is the case, it's not something I need/want as an experienced player.

The biggest problem for new players is they think they need to know ALL the rules. When in fact, they just need to know what their own guys/army can do...you'll find out what your opponent can do soon enough. I am all for new people getting into the game, I just don't want to climb out of my hibernation to go down a road that is unnecessary for me.

Code One is an intro to/simpler version of N4, a stepping stone between the Operation boxes and the full N4 rules due in August. It's also designed to be playable as it's own, more curated, game for people that rebounded off the vastness of N3.

I found a problem with the infinity CodeOne Army app, The Gamma is shown the s4, and he has no NWI.

NWI doesn't exist in Code One, so that solves half the problem ;)

Ugh. Just went browsing through the rulebook, and it feels just as awkward as N3 in terms of language, formatting, etc. They also added new art for the graphic examples, but kept all the old ones, so now there’s at least 3 different graphic styles.

I know, it just the looks. But I was kind of hoping this would be a chance to have a much more polished product. Something I could bandy around to prospective gaming partners that are currently too in love with GW slick looks...

    They aren't the same.

CodeOne is about midway between the Operation: X missions and N3 in terms of complexity.

I understand. While Code one is aimed at the beginner, it does make things simpler for experienced players who just want a quick game. They are aiming to include 15 point battles to only take less than 45 minutes in a small board size. It also limits the game to one combat group as well. I can definitely see the appeal of a quicker system to utilize. I look forward to a chance to try it.

Yeah, that's what I had assumed. Cool, I'll go back into hibernation until N4 and hopefully there will be new players.

That would make a lot of sense, but I'm not so sure how I'd feel about the extra 1 SWC on AP/Shock Snipers over just Shock Snipers then

Honestly, we have little idea what will have shock in N4. If shock becomes more limited in N4, multi-weapons will raise in value.

Hopefully that carries (at least partially) into N4. I think "shooting though smoke" needlessly dominates N3 tactics. All smoke being "eclipse" would work for me also.

I would like if smoke just caused a penalty to hit (A -6 low vis zone). By making it all or nothing, it seems like it causes a dependency. Heck, people sometimes determine an armies "power level" on if it has MSV2+smoke.

Which, I can confirm to be nonsense, being a PanO player and all ;) Smoke access is important for armies that want to close the distance, though.

I like the idea of it becoming simply a visibility modifier. I guess we'll see.

I do like that there's now reasons for Doctors to use their Medkit, or even to take Paramedics instead of Doctors. Certain profiles being listed as FTO is a headscratcher though, and should probably be removed in Code One.

All smoke being eclipse would definitely not be an improvement for the game. Eclipse removes interactivity from the game, which is what many people think the issue with Smoke + MSV2 is right now.

ah well ... like I already said: Every state that can be cancelled with a reset is not worth an order.

It's nice in ARO and since there are no KHD, Hacking in C1 is pure defensive board control. Might be intended, but I hope for more in N4.

I disagree completely. It often isn't worth it when the effects will wear off on their own, but if the affected trooper will have to spend orders to get out of the state it's likely that your single order costs him somewhere between 1-3 orders. This is a good deal from game mechanics pov, even without taking tactical advantages into consideration. And both Carbonite and Spotlight have significant ones.

Yeah if it's resetting while you're missile launcher-ing it I reckon it's worth it.

Also IMHO hacking is definitely better as well as simpler in Code 1. That's a nice thing to get done.

Spotlight as an ARO is great. It makes for a really interesting soft defensive option I think.
