Hey all, somewhat recently (time flies!) I travelled from NZ to play in Cancon in Canberra, Australia. A satellite event which ended up with ~64 players and is one of Australia's first satellites, so it was a bit of a pilgrimage for me having jealously eyed up their events for a few years.

I managed to come 9th with vanilla yu jing and thought I'd share my recollection of the events for your consumption.

This was a bit of an experimental list, looking at a strong datatracker who could move onto objectives even if the rest of the list took heavy casualties. The aim being that in a cagey scrap missions like Show of Force and capture and protect or against some sectorial link teams in particular the Hac Tao might inflict deadly casualties.

This was the primary list for most of the missions. It was relatively defensive with the ability to attack with the liberto or krakot to soften defenses and the Hsien as a solid sweeper to open holes for the Su Jian to exploit. Although the Su Jian would often be a datatracker for missions like unmasking so ended up held back until later turns.

    Mission 1 Show of Force

    The Plan

R1 - Hold Rui Shi back, skirmish only. Conserve points and deploy deep.

R2 - Try draw TAG out. Otherwise Tiger to trim points. Still skirmish and position near the obj.

R3 - Push for the Obj. Remember army points are important for scoring.

*List reconstructed from memory. There may be errors.

    Initiative -

I lose the LT roll and Dave picks the deployment zone with all the tall buildings. I am left with the awkward village with wall and one small building to deploy my forces. I deploy most of the infantry in the village with Xi and the TRbot to protect the entrance. Both the Mowang and Rui shi start behind the small building with a Zombie and 2 x shaolin to provide the smoke.

    upload_2020-3-9_18-1-0.png

    Turn 1 -
The Rui Shi starting on the left flank advances to the middle of the board, gets some smoke and takes on the TR bot which was covering much of the table from a corner roof. I fortunately don't get crit and spend a couple orders removing the bot as the kurgat engineer awaits nearby.

The rui follows through to the left side of the board, looting ODD, killing a daturazi and the zerat. Pulling back and ending in suppression near my deployment again but on the right flank now

Dave decides the Rui shi must die and moves his tag towards the midfield to drop some mines nearby. Realising I have expendable troops to clear the mines he then pushes up the link, eventually getting a preta around the corner to thrown chain rifle and let the mine off on the Rui Shi. At this point I reveal my hac tao catching 2 more preta, the raktorak and the Raicho. Only the raicho remains, unscathed. Dave redeploys the oznat, but doesn't have enough orders to move the TAG and doesn't want to risk another missile just at the moment.

    Turn 2 -
I manage to smoke out the TAG with a nearby shaolin who then charges into CC, but I get greedy thinking I can CC it to death with him alone. The Shaolin gets 1 wound through before being smooshed. I then follow this up by airdropping the tiger in on the side behind a small building and out of LoF of the oznat. The plan is to remove the oznat and then tie up the big TAG again and maybe get another shaolin over there for a double team. The Oznat dodges 3 times ending engaged with the tiger. OK, new plan. I move the mowang and shaolin up on the left, clearing both remaining pretas and 1 of the 2 daturazi. The mowang has the akylat kanon trained on the morat TAG, and the shaolin is ready to screen from the dat. The hac tao re-enters camo.

Dave continues his R2 success as the daturazi avoids all the ARO's on his impetuous move-dodge, I chose not to reveal the hac tao as I want to force his TAG into tough choices. But he then moves an ikadron just enought to flash stun my shaolin, leaving the mowang and a distant Kuang as the only AROs to the daturazi. This Dat proceeds to dance around, first chain rifling the mowang, then getting smoke down, but not enough to avoid AROs from no less than 3 models to engage the mowang in CC. The mowang tied up he decides to try reposition the raicho to cover near the central objective, firing on the hac tao, killing it dead in one burst. Dave then finishes the mowang off - my datatracker.

    Turn 3 -
Time to pick up the pieces I consolidate my groups. Impetuous phase sees both shaolin die to ARO fire. My last remaining pieces with any hope of securing the objective is Xi and the TR remote. But I need to get through the TAG, which is now hunkered in near the objective. I rev it up with assisted fire and move to the end of the bus to engage within 16". Now returning the favour and putting the TAG unconscious in 1 burst. I put both Xi and the TR bot on the central console, killing the Morat on the roof (who was the Lt). Critically, I choose to put Xi into suppression, standing up.

Dave is in LoL with not many morats left on the board. But with plenty of command tokens remaining he activates an ikadron, who has to move-move twice to get within flamer range of the central objective. The ikadron avoids long range combi and pistol shots to get the double flame. Xi fails to dodge and dies. The TR bot guns down the ikadron and then passes both saves.

Game ends 6 – 0 to Yu Jing.

    Hindsight is 20/20:

Dave played really well after the turn 1 setback left most of his useful pieces exposed, making the most of an opening. My biggest mistake was probably pulling back with the Rui Shi after picking up ODD. Leaving it in his half of the table, in suppression watching all of the right flank troops might have locked him down and possibly with the orders spent retreating I could have moved the TR bot to support.

I don't think moving the mowang up was necessarily the wrong move, I should have respected the Daturazi and really re-camoing the hactao was unnecessary and I should have used her ARO's on the Dat straight away, but the flash pulse was an excellent move as I expected the shaolin to either engage or chain rifle the dat long before he reached the mowang. Although we did rule that the shaolin couldn't engage while stunned and this is turned up to be wrong and might have held him up.

Overall Dave was a great opponent and never gave up, and kept looking for ways to get the upper hand, and he nearly had me.

    Mission 2 Unmasking

    The Plan going second

R1 – If no ARO go for buttons early. Otherwise try to trim enemy specialists or the Datatracker

R2 – Buttons or Su Jian missiles for the Designated target.

R3 – Aim for scoring extra points here – Downing decoys, enemy Datatracker, keeping mine alive.

Generally try to block out attacks on the designated target with smoke and templates.

*List reconstructed from memory. There is definitely errors as I can’t quite figure the last few models in Michael’s list.

    Initiative –

Michael won the roll and opted for first turn. He has stacks of orders so this makes sense to me. So I choose the deployment zone which looks to have better decoy placements and a few key chokepoints.

    upload_2020-3-9_18-1-36.png

The table is a kind of favela style board with tight corridors around buildings and generally pretty limited lanes of fire. My board choice gives Michael some sniper-ish towers but I figure MRRF aren’t going to be able to post ARO threats that would seriously challenge the Hsien.

    Deployment –

I deploy quite conservatively, with two of my HVTs behind the left hand building, the real target being behind the fence and slightly easier to get to – hoping that Michael will guess the decoy tucked in the corner first. This is protected by Xi, the krakot and 2 shaolin, the su jian and zhencha are deployed centrally with the Hsien and liberto on the right. Michael deploys his metro link with a lone briscard marksman rifle on my left opposite my 2 decoys, his briscard haris opposite the Hsien and 4 camo tokens spread across the board, with Jacques on my left and a sapper sniper on the roof with good lanes of fire to my half of the board, his designated target is behind a long pipe on my right. My su Jian is datatracker, he selects his briscard marksman deployed with the metros as datatracker.

    Turn 1 –

Michael kicks off by coordinating the 4 camo tokens several times, advancing the chasseurs and laying 2 mines each in the midfield and re-camoing. Spending all of his command tokens. He then moves the briscards up to press the button, doesn’t fall for my trap and guesses the correct target. Seeing the opportunity to get the designated target with Jacques (who by now is basically on the building it is hiding behind), so he moves up cautiously, first shooting a shaolin, then he just needs to take down the krakot and he will have free shots. He tries to stay out of chest mine range, but is just in and dies while also putting the krakot down. Hes mostly out of orders so repositions the briscards back near his designated target.

My turn starts off with many of my impetuous troops staring down the barrel of the zouave sniper, which looks pretty grim. But between some crucial smoke FtF wins by shaolin and one Kuang dodging, I suffer no casualties. Between a shaolin and the liberto I then proceed to clear out most of the mines in the midfield. The Liberto pegs one chasseur, the Hsien stands up in smoke, takes out the briscard, then another chasseur. The Zhencha moves up the centre to press a button to reveal the designated target behind the pipe and then climb a building to threaten the briscards in later turns.

    Turn 2 –

At this point Michael has lost of his midfield presence and casualties to both combat groups means that he is down to 6 or 7 in group 1 and 5 in group 2 and can’t consolidate. He starts advancing the metros towards my target, but in doing so comes into LoF of a nearby shaolin who sacrifices himself to smoke the target. Realising this will make killing the target with his link very tough now he moves them back defensively to try next turn. Turning the remaining orders to the chasseur to take down the zhencha, they trade as the chasseur kills the zhencha with rifle fire but succumbing to a mine. The briscards reposition and some suppression is set up.

Yu Jing turn 2 is simple, the right flank shaolin crosses into the french table half. Smoking the approach to the target, and then shanking one briscard nearest to the smoke. The su-jian races across the table to kill the target, and picks up a dozer and the unarmed traktor while its there. I don’t have enough orders to retreat to safety though to protect those points so I leave it at a corner covering his datatracker with potential panzerfaust AROs.

    Turn 3 –

Michael’s inability to consolidate orders continues to hurt him here as he now has to spend all of his orders trying to march the link team towards the designated target through ARO fire. He does manage to wade through it to kill it from the building with a regular metro. Picking up some crucial points and denying me one.

My turn 3 is focussed on picking up some extra points. Pressing buttons with the guilang and killing another decoy and Michael’s datatracker with the su jian.

Game end 9 – 3 to Yu Jing.

    Hindsight 20/20:

I was pretty happy with how the game played out. I think Michael’s main blunder was burning all his command tokens to put mines down which were going get burnt on cheap high PH models. Dice definitely went my way which further compounded a good start and allowed me to just carry out the plan without too much of a hitch.

    Mission 3 Acquisition

    The Plan going second

R1 – Deploy very defensively, if Ben wants to advance into my table half let him. Main aim in early turns will be to kill orders and specialists where possible. Snipe datatracker if possible.

R2 – Depending on how R1 goes, try to pick up buttons or continue hunting points and specialists.

R3 – All in on getting the central antenna / picking up consoles with specialists or just controlling them.

Try not to get steamrolled basically.

    Initiative –
I won the roll and opted for deployment. Reasonably happy that if Ben gave me first turn I could make good use of it with the increased deployment zones. Ben chose to go first and I prepared for the worst. Overall I didn’t think the deployment zones were much different, but I picked the side with an obvious sniper tower mainly to deny that from Ben as I expected a dakini sniper link.

    upload_2020-3-9_18-2-10.png

I’d call this a relatively dense table with only 2 diagonal firelanes which did not go from each deployment zone. We had also agreed to play with interiors which I though would just add to the quagmire that would be our large order count lists facing off against each other. Critically the main objective was on top of an objective room, and we did not agree on whether it should be inside or on top. So we rolled and it ended up on top. In hindsight, given this building didn’t have very man means to get on top of without using long skill climb I wouldn’t recommend doing that again.

    Deployment-

I went for a refused flank style deployment. My right side had one building and then the single largest open space on the table in the form of a diagonal road way, while my left was several buildings with narrow alleyways. So I deployed a shaolin, a kuang, the krakot and pangguling on the right/centre. The rest of my army went on the left. The Hsien was on a roof, with the doctor nearby and the su jian was deployed on the roof of a small building in the left corner standing up. The guilang and xi were placed forward to screen the left, with the liberto right up against the room, with her mine on the roof watching the objective. The zhencha was deployed centrally tucked away on a roof to make a last turn rush as the liason.

Ben deployed most of his link on my right. A TR bot on a rooftop on the left and a camo token atop the building in the centre, with the remainder of his squishy support units tucked in deep within his DZ inside of buildings. He had two flash bots deployed on roofs with decent lines of fire. The posthumans came down with the Mk5 on a bridge which overwatched one of the few ways I could get onto the objective room (Which involved moving to his side of the table, climbing up a ladder onto a roof and then walking across an exposed bridge). An engineer was deployed with the dakinis and a hidden assualt hacker was deployed right next to the objective.

    Turn 1 –

Ben started off the game by activating his engineer and moving a palbot into my madtraps. I had deployed them fairly poorly and he managed to set both off. He then followed up by moving his sensor bot towards my left side camp screen (the guilang AHD), seeing the writing on the wall I ARO’d with my liberto to hopefully get a +6 shotgun through, he lost. The sensor then moved towards the guilang and I attempted to oblivion the remote so he wouldn’t get the easy hack. Sadly that failed. The danavas then made short work of him. All going swimmingly for Ben he put marksmanship on the TR bot, and it climbed the nearby tower to get eyes on my Su jian, from this vantage he’d have a pretty dominating view of my DZ. I also realised my terrible mistake of positioning as I think the Bot would see the su jian even if it went prone. Fortunately without cover the cat was hitting on 17’s and got very very lucky to beat the B4 attack first time and immediately end the bot before it could reign with terror. Ben would spend the rest of his turn positioning the dakinis to better defend against potential warband attack.

My turn 1 saw the warbands advance in relative safety in the shadows of the buildings (and thankfully no tower TR bot) and I saw an opening after Ben’s re-position. He had put most of the dakinis and the engineer behind the smaller building and central room, which was enfiladed from the corner of a building on the far left, connected to my hsiens building by a bridge. I lay down smoke so the Hsien could advance, still wary of a long Posthuman sniper ARO and lined up the dakini fireteam. The damned Apsara + link bonii made them tough though! The Hsien with 4 die on 17s vs the 2 die on 10s, with a massive 82% to inflict a wound gets crit by the first combi dakini. OK, glad I’ve got 2W. After several orders, getting crit again and only living because I also rolled a crit, by the end I had managed to down 2 and the engineer. The HMG was still up and I had used so many orders I couldn’t retreat the Hsien. Payback for the TR bot I guess. So I hid behind a nearby box thing prone.

    Turn 2 –

The dakini group was now looking a little less like a force to be reckoned with. So Ben needed to get crafty. He started off by moving his danavas along the backline to eventually get a line to the building the hsien was on, to lay some pitchers and maybe do some hacking damage. 4-5 orders later though he’d failed both pitchers and had to skulk back lest the warbands chew her up next turn. The remainder of his turn was relocating a little with the dakinis to get out of the valley of death and suppressing with the posthuman.

I was feeling good about this turn of events and thought if I could clear the Mk5 and get onto the building I would be in a very good position. I also had shaolins close to both the Mk5 and the dakini HMG which could get me some cheap kills. At this point I got greedy and wanted to guarantee the damage so tried to throw smoke in a FtF which would let me use the irregular orders to stab them. Both shaolin failed and died. I followed this up with the starting to move the su jian towards the objective, But after a few attempts had only managed 1 W on the Mk5 and taken 2 myself. I needed to focus on the objective, and made a beeline for that roof. Ben revealed his Mk2 hacker as I came close and nearly isolated the cat, who now could only slink away, killing the dakini HMG on its way to regather for turn 3.

    Turn 3 –

Both of us had poor turn 2s and Ben was in a good place to capitalise and retake some momentum. But the tax of 3 games was showing as he first moved the Mk5 out to face to face the hsien who was now in suppression, this went poorly for his wounded posthuman who died. Only then he noticed that his sniper could get a narrow LoF to my Hsien (who was inexplicably standing up as an extra ARO threat). Killing my Lt would be game winning, so after a bit of back and forth we agreed he could get a shot by leaving cover. With the Apsara still boosting the sniper it was a pretty much 50/50 who would win. I got lucky once again with my ARO and knocked the sniper out. Ben could only move a few of his remaining pieces to put extra AROs out, secured the right console with his CSU and moved dart from her starting perch down to the objective, taking a wound from the liberto mine. But she then crawled to the edge of the building, took a long range EM grenade spec fire on the nearby su jian needing some thing like 4s, rolling a 3 and having the su jian fail both its dodge and the BTS save. Dogpiling onto the objective along with the Mk2.

So I wasn’t in LoL, so can’t complain too much about the su jian being deactivated. I started by knocking the CSU off the console with the krakot, and securing another console with a kuangshi. The hsien had no hope of getting onto the objective (as despite the picture showing a bridge, I don’t recall it being there and remember thinking I’d risk shots and hacking trying to climb onto the roof). So it was down to the zhencha. Using climbing+ he was able to move onto the roof, where dart had to delay or risk getting shot and I moved into her back arc. I forgot to declare I wasn’t using stealth at this point and the Mk2 got a discover in, revealing the zhencha and crucially denying me surprise shot. This made it a pretty dicey face to face and the zhencha didn’t manage to kill the Mk2. Dart succeeded in turning around and I was now stuck facing both models. I had quite a few orders left to try for it and get the major, but I decided if I spent those orders moving the hsien onto his HVT I’d take the Win and decided discretion was the better part of valour and played it safe.

End game 2 – 0 to Yu Jing.

    Hindsight is 20/20:

Ben had a great list and had several moments where he would have had me on the ropes if not for some decent dice. It came swings and round abouts though as I equally struggled to capitalise on opportunities. I really struggled to get ontop of the building with the main objective and threw away some of my warbands a little too cheaply. Looking back in turn 2 I think I got a bit cocky with the su jian and could have spent those orders pulling the Hsien back to try get an angle on his posthuman and take out the dakinis, saving the su jian for round 3 to help the zhencha. I think I was still worrying about a sniper at this point, as Ben had the SWC for it. The hacker ended up being a much more difficult piece to surmount.

    Mission 4 Capture and Protect

    The Plan going first

R1 – Deploy very defensively, carefully snipe enemy models/orders. Hopefully score an easy classified.

R2 – Start angling to get the beacon. Otherwise make sure to score classified.

R3 – Get the beacon / if that looks impossible absolutely bunker on my beacon.

    Initiative –

Jordan won this roll and opted for deployment. No doubt expecting me to take the classic choice of first turn and let him have the last chance at objectives.

    upload_2020-3-9_18-2-38.png

Boy of boy. So during an earlier round the building in the middle of the table had been switch with those smaller blue crates. This loss of height created a sort of bowl in the middle of the table which was open to most of the two DZs and the placement of the crates and the building, along with the terrain on both sides of the board meant the middle was functionally the only way to advance up the table. For a mission like capture and protect, this made the ARO game very concentrated.

    Deployment –

Jordan announced he had strategos so I was going to be deploying everything and my worst fear was confirmed. I tried to crowd AROs around the objective, with madtraps a little forward, the TR bot nearby and my daoying prone on the nearby small building. The Rui Shi was deployed far forward on the right, and the mowang was deployed on the far left, with the Hac tao on top of the small building on the far left with good lines of Fire into the centre.

Jordan had several buildings to hide behind/on top of so he placed most of his support units prone on the roofs, with a flash bot on the far right corner covering this flank and is DZ. He then had 2 camo markers by the beacon, 2 on my right behind the line of crates, and 2 on the buildings on my left. His marut was position centrally but poking out so it could see between the 2 buildings my rui shi was hiding behind, and covering that right side of the board. A posthuman sniper was on the left covering the rest of the table. He placed both netrods successfully, with one scattering back into a safe spot in his DZ and the other tucked behind a box just outside of his DZ.

    Turn 1 –

I started off with impetuous models moving forward, and Jordan immediately revealed the posthuman to kill my Group 1 shaolin who I thought would be safe running up near my beacon. He clearly thought I wouldn’t be try to bring my rui shi over due to the Marut having a LoF into my DZ that completely cut it off, and he was right. The Mk2 Sniper really got into my head and the rest of the turn was spent aimlessly shuffling bits in my DZ and going into suppression fire.

Jordan didn’t really need to do much at this stage as he had pretty good control of the board. So he simply moved up the liberto on the right side to first set off the madtraps, which unsurprisingly were avoided. He then moved to place a mine near the rui shi. Then pop the corner to face to face me and have the mine kill the suppressing rui shi. It didn’t, but nor did the rui shi manage to kill the liberto, and a nearby shaolin placed smoke covering the bot. He left another mine and moved back to the otherside of the building and tried to shoot Xi, unsuccessfully. He then used the posthuman to try kill the TR bot. It took a few orders as he played it safe and re-camo’d each time to get surprise shot, eventually putting it down and spending the extra orders to take it off the table and not give me a chance to repair.

    Turn 2 –

My impetuous troops moved up and this time my Kuang were getting hit by the liberto. Fortunately surviving for now. I cancelled my shaolin so as to not set off the mine which would hit the Ruishi. But then proceeded to move up a little hoping to maybe discover it and shoot it. I totally misjudged the distance and was easily in mine range and the Rui shi died. Getting desperate I moved up the mowang to shoot the posthuman and managed to kill it in 1 round of shooting. I was too afraid to try get to the rui shi with my yaozao so left it behind. Repositioning a few models to better ARO the liberto. The mowang repositioned into the dead end of the buildings in the left, not seeing the 2D camo markers Jordan was using I had left it totally exposed to his rear camo marker.

Jordan started with the now impetuous liberto charging forward to faceoff against xi and the 2 kuang shi. After a few orders of eating chain rifles and eventually killing both and the yaozao without suffering any damage. He relocated back to where he put the mines to finish off the Rui Shi and ready to ARO the shaolin. He then revealed dart who proceeded to blast the out of cover mowang, re-camoing each time to not risk getting shocked to death. He knocked off 2 wounds before it could finally guts out of LoF.

    Turn 3 –

It was looking pretty grim, I hadn’t killed a single model and barely left my DZ. So the plan was go for classifieds and bunker down. My shaolin impetuous into CC with his liberto, didn’t crit and the liberto survived again. I then spent the bulk of my turn to drop a tiger in jordan’s DZ, skulk around to knockout a yudbot and coup de grace it for a point. My mowang dropped back and entered suppressive fire near the hac tao, Xi zhuang moved to have LoF to the beacon and that was that.

Jordan only had to move the Marut through the remainder of my army with 7 orders, his Lt order and the irregular from the liberto who was still not dead and he would take the major win. It started with the liberto impetuously fighting the shaolin, critting and killing it. He then moved dart up, who got an angle on the mowang out of cover again, and killed it in a single volley. Finally, moving the marut up to spring the inevitable ARO trap. But he first had to move through the plucky engineer. First volley and we both crit. He then continued on to see Xi and I revealed the Hac Tao, the marut split burst 3 onto the Hactao and 1 into Xi. Xi crit flash pulsed the Marut and to add salt the hac tao survived the shots and remained standing and the engineer put a wound through with the free combi shot. At this point, with the marut unable to pick up the beacon on account of stunned, he thought for a bit and then decided to take his naga minelayer which was next to his objective and spend several orders running up to the objective. He avoided the hac tao completely but Xi was still overwatching the beacon as well as the engineer. Jordan seemed to forget about the former’s flamethower and the latter’s existence completely and proceeded to die picking up the beacon. He was too low on orders now, I might win 1-0. Just as he was about the throw in the towel he re-checked his classified, had the one which involved passing a wip on an enemy specialist, and it was one that gave bonus points because capture and protect (yay). He had two orders left thanks to the liberto, move-move towards my daoying who had not re-camo’d. He just needed to survive all of my AROs and then move into BtB and pass a wip check. Which he did.

    Game ends Aleph 2-1.

    Hindsight is 20/20:

I had planned to take Yangstate for this mission. However after looking at the table, and knowing I was coming up against Aleph I was seriously considering taking the Yin list as having infiltrators would give options getting out of a shitty deployment zone. I was also conscious that a Marut would hard counter a lot of my yang list especially on how open/bowl like the table was. Somehow I convinced myself that an Achilles centred aleph list would hard counter my Yin list and somehow that Jordan wouldn’t take a marut for this mission , so I chose Yang. This was my first mistake.

Choosing to go first given the challenging board state and a list with limited alpha potential was another mistake. In some ways I think deploying conservatively and going 2nd might have pressured Jordan into having to advance into the shitty midfield, at which point I could have potentially engaged on more favourable terms.

Overall though I think my deployment was my main mistake. I missed the potential for the marut to dissect my deployment zone and cut off my army from supporting itself which let his skirmishers to attack me piecemeal and limit my ability to respond. Being unfamiliar with Aleph I had wrongly assumed some of his camo would be assault hackers, which in hindsight would be very slim chances especially after the posthuman sniper was revealed.

Even with my poor starting position, once he revealed the posthuman, I should have just taken a FtF vs the marut with my ruishi to escape as there were decent odds I would only be in Unc 2 and the Yaozao was immediately there to fix it up. This would have left me with free reign in the midzone to try pick off some camo and remove the posthuman.

Overall, I got into my own head too much and made some very big mistakes. Jordan did really well to play conservatively and not overextend when he didn’t need to, but definitely became overconfident in just waltzing up with the marut into a flash pulse, while really unlucky, was a risk I don’t think he needed to take given he had a libertos right there to walk up and shoot Xi at close range.

R3 – amass points in the contested zones, set up strong ARO to prevent a sneak into a zone. Particularly watch out for AD or hidden deployment.

    Intiative –

I lose the roll and Josh takes the much better table side and as I’ve barely played against Tohaa and have no idea what to expect there's no way I’m giving it first turn.

    upload_2020-3-9_18-4-49.png

This was a beautiful haqqislam themed table with quite a few very interesting areas. Unfortunately my table side is pretty sparse and between the bridges and streets, theres quite a few ways to advance or hunker down in a zone. Theres a large bazaar type building just on Josh's side of the halfway which I don’t notice has a courtyard that is open from both sides until turn 3!

    Deployment -

Deploying first I stick to my refused flank strategy and deploy heavily on the right flank. The Hsien, the guilang and 2 shaolin hunker around the small building with the tower bit. The zhencha deploys on the highest part of the central bazaar-like building. With the rest of the army either hiding prone behind small bits of terrain or behind the large oval building on the right. The krakot and pangguling deployed forward in the nook of the building just outside my DZ on the left. The Su jian is my reserve on goes on the right side as well.

Josh spreads out liberally, with his sniper located centrally with lines covering the main ways into his DZ down the left or right flank with the kaeltars and krigel triad behind. His chaksaas on mostly crowded on my left side with a lone kamael. The sukuel triad was behind the small building central left. He then placed the grief on the building stairs just around the corner from my pangguling. Jaan star was placed on top of the tower where my hsien and friends were crowded.

The su jian was my datatracker, the sukeul was Josh’s datatracker.

    Turn 1-

Impersonators! Fck. I decided to try and deal with the impersonator immediately above my hsien with a shaolin. However, the Gao-Rael and a liberto were covering the *only* ladder up (there was another ladder I missed until turn 3). The Hsien took on the gao-rael and did no damage thanks to the mate, but he had to guts out of LoF. I then tried on a classic discover shoot on the liberto which failed, I then moved a 2nd shaolin to try discover, and that failed. Meanwhile on the left flank/impersonator, I relocated the liberto to cover the stair and moved the pangguling into the nook out of LoF. Overall the impersonators did their job and I had ended turn 1 without much advance from my start and both impersonators no worse for wear.

Josh started off with the left impersonator, a greif operator, who activated and peaked the corner to my camo liberto. He spent a new order for a discover+shoot and lost the FtF with the liberto. Josh then pushed his datatracker triad down my left side, getting onto the building and approaching the krakot and pangguling. He tried to carefully pick off the shaolin and Kuang sitting at the edge of the oval building, once again getting pretty unlucky and only putting 1 Kuang down, with the 2nd dodging close to chain rifle range and the shaolin covering them in smoke. He decided not to take on the krakot and relocated defensively on the bridge. He moved the gao-rael out again (probably to cover that courtyard I had missed). This allowed Josh to win 3 zones to 1 for Round 1.

    Turn 2 –

For this turn I largely spent orders clearing out Josh’s midfield presence. Between the liberto, krakot and a bringing the su jian over to the left side, the sukeul triad was eventually wiped out. The Guilang stands up to finally flush out the liberto allowing a shaolin to team up on Jaan-staar on the roof, going with B2 CC22 the shaolin loses and ends as a pile of goo, leaving a warcor to hold up the tohaa toolkit. while the Hsien continued an ineffective gunfight with the Gao-Rael, dropping back a little and entering suppression fire. I secured my zones but was yet to threaten Josh’s table side.

Josh had lost all of his forward presence but still had Jaan who dispatched the warcor and could now peek out to shoot the Hsien warrior. However, because of the models on the left tower he couldn’t get a totally favourable angle. He had to try several times against the suppressing hsien, eventually dying in the effort. He followed up with a few attempts with the Gao-Rael, to no real effect. He moved some of the chaksa forward and the kaeltar+kriigel triad up behind the large central building.

We tied on zones, but with Josh’s datatracker dead I got the extra point.

    Turn 3 –

This turn needed to be a strong finish to give me the win. It started well with an impetuous shaolin getting past the chaksa screen and chain rifling the kaeltar team and crucially killing the kriigel agent. The su jian killed the Gao-Rael and one of his makual comrades. Now utilising the large building courtyard to secure the right quadrant, which the zhencha and hsien move to assist. Other models moved to provide extra ARO’s to the Josh’s main group of remaining models on the left.

I had a pretty strong hold of the board at this stage and Josh had to move through several ARO’s to get his baggage over into the right quadrant I was now holding, which died. Finally, he used the kamael FO to pick up a classified by observing a shaolin. Zones to Yu Jing.

    6 – 5 to Yu Jing.

    Hindsight is 20-20:

My inexperience against tohaa really shined through, but not paying enough attention to the table was a pretty bad move as well. I struggled to deal with the impersonators, but I feel in part this was due to some particularly poor dice (except maybe beating the greif with a liberto). I think my 2nd turn went well but I should have possibly being gunning for a 3rd zone, although I may have risked overextending if I had. The zhencha was quiet this game as he was locked down by the liberto mine since again I had missed the opportunity to just clear the mine from my side of the courtyard relatively safely which might have allowed the zhencha to contribute to threatening Josh’s side of the board. Its hard to take too much from this game though as I felt like dice featured quite heavily, with some fairly swingy results but I felt mostly favouring me in the crucial face-offs.

I think josh’s only mistake was to overextend so much with his datatracker. He could have better selected a datatracker that would sit further back and still pull the attack with the sekeul which would have netted him at least 1 or 2 more points.

    Closing thoughts;

So I ended up 9/64(ish) players, and a handful of victory points behind my hero Robert Cantrell with his Yu Jing.

I had an absolute blast going over to cancon in Australia and met so many fantastic people. My 5 opponents were great and I was having great banter during the social events. I didn’t get a lot of practice in the lead up but I was glad to be playing my old favourite yu jing as I was ultimately very familiar with my lists (mostly). I think this helped a lot, especially facing off against unfamiliar lists I was able to adjust to the problems on the fly without too much paralysis. But there were some definite kinks that would have been ironed out with a few more practice games under the belt.

I massively struggled with games where I had to go first, as despite having some absolute beaty sticks I am very much a conservative player and overcoming that is still a hurdle. But the flipside being that my conservatism probably kept me in the game right to the last turn and each battle felt pretty hard fought for the wins (or loss).

The tournament itself had an interesting dynamic where the top tables in day 2 were not all just straight major victories, and it was a mixed field as to OP scored

Good to see real player writing specific details. I must admit I like both rosters' building philosophy, not heading full horde, each rosters picking some unique picks like Hsien Lt or Hact ML.

Also a quite bad luck struck your Day 2! XD ALEPH streak is annoying at least, and each your games showed it wasn't easy game to deal with. Great results and sportsmanship!

P.S) It seems your roster did not quite assumed opponents can bring a couple of AHDs. Were you suspecting to face Mk.2 upon reaching high echelon? If so, what was your plan on that perfect nutbuster?

    Very thoughtful words, thank you.

I definitely made some picks purely on a I want to paint this and play it. The hsien definitely brought his strengths to the event rather than his weakness's.

Day 2 it could be all to easy to blame a liberto passing something like 6-7 armor rolls on the trot and beating a Shaolin in CC. But it would be missing the forest for the trees. I didn't make great decisions and the game ended up as a loss. With only a bit of luck coming back my way to stop it being a total loss.

Regarding AHD it's funny you say that because I definitely remember specifically thinking that people would bring AHD because of the missions encouraging tags. I then clearly decided to ignore it when building my lists. Generally I didn't think the midfield AHD would be a big problem for Yu Jing. There's the non-hackable skirmishers and the zhencha can use camo to get past it. Worst case you hunt them with Shaolin. Yang was not totally equipped to deal with hackers in all honesty, and it definitely weighted into my round 4 performance.

    Thanks for that!

Thanks for the battle report! Really appreciate all the tactical thoughts, particularly the planning and postgame review.

Thanks for the interesting BRs and my compliment for your tournament performance, finishing in the top ten with so many players is an excellent result.
