I found that GW-style gem effects are amazingly easy to do. Crystals aren't much harder, just usually need really steady hands due to how small you need to paint the layers. I had to lay off the caffeine and even have a beer before painting to get my hands steady enough.
The shards actually were much easier than I expected and build pretty much themselves. The process was quite forgiving too. The real crystals on the base will something else due to the access difficulty.
No, eyes are much harder. Much less forgiving of mistakes, unless you're painting the eyes on chibis like Super Dungeon Explore.
Yea, I just did another pair of eyes and I freaked out thinking I had screwed it up. I didn't but it was frightening. At least with crystals, if you screw up, you can cover. Eyes, you have one, maybe two attempts before there's just too much paint and you're out of luck.
Guess what ? Spoiler: Moarrrr Dragons cause there's no such thing as too much dragons So 3 official D&D dragons and a pseudodragon for the campaign (ok there's also 4 elementals but they don't count, they're not dragons). And obviously Spoiler: Even maorrrr dragons The Glorantha:Gods War - Dragons expansion and extra Valyndra* *it appeared that my godson is found of dragons (not my fault) and when I showed him the one I painted last year he said he'd love to be able to paint dragons too (ok, maybe my fault here, but, hey, who am I to spoil a kid's hopes ?). Unfortunately, even with 300km/h (maybe more) trains available we still live far enough so I can't teach him. So the least I could do is to paint one for him.
In fact I already have a unicorn available and painted due to Massive Darkness KS being fully painted in 2018 Potato will be restricted to any Portal RPG that may eventually exist. Ain't it a mandatory monster for any D&D campaign ? Joke aside, I'm pretty amazed by the detail level of the Wizkids minis. Those are branded HD and I understand why. One drawback is, no one seems to paint those small ones (or at least paint them and show the interweb the result). You can easily find tutorial for anything bigger than a Wyrmling none for them. The elementals should be interesting and relatively easy to paint as they're pretty big. For the Wyrmlings I'm considering several options: Black Dragon: Blue ink and black ink or black Citadel contrast paint (that I already have for another project) Other Dragons, Pseudodragons and Sprites flat colors + Army Painter dip (diluted and brush applied) Still not sure at the moment but I'm working on my four Y-J remotes first, so still some time to think about it.
I got some Wizkid stuff but it's all décorations, not characters. IT's very high quality though. I'll be painting treasures next. I should start my own thread to post my stuff.
I've done most of the Elementals' paint yesterday evening. I may post pics here but they're not dragons I couldn't help but ordered a silver dragon from the pathfinder deep cuts range I may show some comparisons.
The elementals really demand fluorescent paint on the clear parts (as do any spellcasters). Your D&D party seems to be headed to a similar place my old group was, where we had enough dead dragons in storage that when the Dragonomicon came out we could make dragoncrafted armor or pieces for everyone, and with enough different dragons to give decent protection from almost all the elements!
Actually those elementals are already done with candy paints (except earth obviously) and the result really makes me happy. Initially I wanted to follow this tutorial which is pretty much the closest thing to an official tutorial I could find. It is really interesting and honestly I didn't digress that much (Earth is 100% the video's recipe). Instead of inks I borrowed my brother's candy paint set he use for trucks and car model painting. I'm not yet 100% sure about water as I tried to enhanced the recesses darkness and it may be too much. Still ok but I may strip it as redoing it is pretty quick. I'll post some pics later. Silver Dragon found its way home yesterday btw. Regarding the campaign, I'm not the DM so my compulsive acquisitions may never see the table. And at our current level, I do not feel the urge to meet elementals yet . I may have been influenced by our current Divinity 2 campaign as my character summon elementals.
I know I have to work on my remaining remotes but I can't help and went back to Dragons. Also, as it's a gift for my godson, I have to work on it sooner than later. Here is the second coming of Valyndra. Spoiler: More Valyndra Also, I added a finish touch to the water elemental Spoiler: Water Elemental On a side note, I took the time to review this whole thread this week and I notice that someone didn't kept his promise
