I have a few questions with regards to fire teams, smoke and special dodge. The grenade rule states; "A BS Throwing Weapon, useful at short range against groups of enemies or obscured targets." (http://infinitythewiki.com/en/Grenades#Grenades). The smoke ammo rule states; "Smoke has the special property of being able to stop an Attack in the same Order it was declared. For this reason, using this Special Ammunition is a Special Dodge." (http://infinitythewiki.com/en/Smoke_Special_Ammunition#Smoke_and_Special_Dodge) My questions are; 1. Does using smoke ammo mean your model is no longer doing a BS throwing attack and instead it is instead doing a special dodge? 2. In which case does this mean a fire team in ARO must choose between special dodging (throwing smoke) and shooting?
Special dodge allows smoke grenade BS attack to be face to face even if the target of the BS attack is not the enemy trooper (normal condition for roll to be face to face) as long as you block the LoF between you and the enemy trooper with your smoke Special dodge rule : Spoiler Smoke and Special Dodge Unlike other Special Ammunition, Smoke can be used to avoid enemy Attacks, but only if those Attacks require LoF and a Roll, and their LoF is blocked by the Smoke Circular Template being placed. Smoke has the special property of being able to stop an Attack in the same Order it was declared. For this reason, using this Special Ammunition is a Special Dodge. However, a trooper who throws Smoke in ARO cannot move up to 2 inches the way a normal Dodge would allow. Bear in mind that Special Dodge and the Dodge Skill are different things with different rules. But you are still using the BS attack skill (with the trait special dodge and targetless) as a short skill or an ARO Therefore, in ARO, the rest of your fireteam can BS Attack too.
throwing smoke is a BS attack, with all what is related with that the "special dodge" is there so you can "aim" a point in the battlefield that blocks LoS against the opponent, and make it a FtF roll
I'll add a counter question here if possible. The ARO using Special Dodge is not modified by malus Like Cover of the trooper i'm reacting to, for example. But is modified by Eventual Surprise Shot (if present) or other malus the trooper are imposing to the defender, right? Plus: if the ARO trooper is in a fiereteam of at least 4 elements does he have the +1B to the Special Dodge of the smoke?
Yes, you get that malus both at firing back and dodging anyway. Unless you have Sixth Sense lv2 (by virtue of being in a Fireteam of 4 or 5 members) Yes, and if it's your active turn, you get to place the 2 templates together or separately (ingenious deployment may let you close bigger areas and still oppose 2 dice to the attacker). Remember that doing a smoke dodge lets you shoot with a Ghost: Synchronized troop (adn viceversa), for example the Guarda de Assalto in PanO and his auxbot with Eclipse smoke (but only the bot gets protected) or the Kerail Preceptors from Tohaa (letting the controller make a smoke dodge while the beast shoots the pulzar or contender)
In reactive turn i have to put both granade in the same place, since i have to aim the same target? I did not understand this, what you mean? Special Dodge protect only the trower?
Exactly, 2 dice at the same spot yes, the same way a normal shot can only deffend the one doing it, smoke only deffends, in that order, the trooper throwing it
But if i "defend" myself well the template is placed and the smoke screen take place for the rest of the Turn? Right?
