Thematically, fluff wise, how would an EXP CCW weapon work? Now I can imagine a blunt weapon with some sort of shaped charge turning some poor fool into a spray of meat chunks, but swords? I don't understand.

From the Wiki page for EXP:

Hand-to-hand combat weapons classified as Explosive have advanced proprietary military technology and are very rare. These weapons utilize similar mechanisms to electro-thermal ammunition: the edge or head of the weapon is covered in micro-grooves filled with superconducting gel. Kinetic impact from the strike turns the gel into ionized plasma, creating a small but potent directed blast.

I'm pretty sure in the case of Ajax' Hammer and the TAG Swords it's just a representation of the sheer SIZE of those things. Getting hit by a superheated, five foot long hunk of iron isn't going to be healthy to anyone :D

Fallout Tactics have two weapons that might fit the bill for a more... primitive approach.

Dynamite Spear (it's a spear with an impact trigger on the sharp end and the sharp end is a dynamite)
Punch Gun (It's a glove with two 12-gauge shotgun shells pointing forwards and a trigger right above the knuckles)

    For double action?
Piston Gloves or Piston Spear. (when they hit something, the release for the piston dagger is triggered and a dagger slams outwards for an additional foot of punching distance)

The fluff to this just sounds ludicrous. The idea alone that someone would sit down and design a hypertech exploding CCW weapon is bonkers, let alone that you’d have a government agency buy these, when you’ve got guns is just ... for lack of a better word; dumb.

I prefer thinking, that DA/EXP weapons are just high quality teseum and a reflection of their handlers ability to use these.

I suspect that the EXP CCW is a shoutout to Priss' Knuckle Bombers from Bubblegum Crisis.

    Booo!!!

I like the idea of an Explosive CCW being a couple bricks of C4 duct taped to a metal rod.

I believe they're designed for situations where overwhelming force is required, but a missile or plastic explosive would be unsuitable. Things like Geckos wandering around in confined spaces probably creates a need for such things. The exploding hypertech is likely used because explosions are cheaper than rare earth metals so rare that they are not, in fact, found on Earth at all. Not to mention it's hard to run out of ammo for your sword; a concern Infinity doesn't really address is the possibility that a force may run out of ammunition over a protracted engagement.

I don't think running out of ammunition is a great issue for the size and type of Infinity missions.
I think of more as Black Ops Missions then real full scale Battles. Frontoviks for example carry 4 Mags and on in the Rifle. If you assume fire disciplin and not just spray and pray. Then 150-250 bullets would do just fine.

For Exp CCW i don't like the Fluff of boomstick. I think of them more of some sort of Energy weapon. Not really Light Sabers but something quite similar.

Black ops missions do have a fairly low chance of running out of supplies unless something goes wrong, but they're drawing from the line infantry most of the time and those guys could very easily find themselves cut off from the baggage train. It's acknowledged in-universe but not in-game; the Red Fury was specifically designed to accept Combi Rifle magazines in case supplies ran low. As for the energy weapon thing, the actual fluff in the first reply shows it basically is; it generates a blast of plasma when it strikes something in a similar fashion to the 40K Thunderhammer.

Depends greatly on your black ops mission type. The LRRPs, the Long Range Recon Patrols in Vietnam, were normally supposed to not get into contact, but they carried a crapton of ammo, on the order of 20 magazines per man. Because when they did get into contact, it would take a hell of a lot of firepower to get them back out of contact. (Was reading a book on this, one time 6 guys had been begging for extraction for hours, finally got it, and the local CO was accusing them of slacking off. The LRRP boss was pissed about not getting his guys extracted, and had them inventory their ammunition in front of the asshole. 6 guys had 18 rounds of ammunition left, TOTAL.)

Close Combat weapons like swords are also pretty handy for boarding actions where distances are much shorter and a stray shot could puncture the hull, rupture a fuel line, or have some other catastrophic consequence.

There's also the psychological factor of a 7 foot tall power armoured crazy person who thinks they are a greek hero of myth with with a massive hammer still charging you after you've unloaded a magazine into him. That's going to make most people question why they are still standing where they are and not running as far away as they can as fast as they can.

    Yup!

When I was in boot camp in 2000, the (Drill Instructors) said that the last time the US Navy issued cutlasses for combat was 1991. Seems a Sailor with a 9mm and 3 feet of steel tended to make the various ship crews not fight when they got boarded. I suspect that cutlasses were issued again after the Iraq invasion.

When they gave him the job, they gave him a gun. The Deliverator never deals in cash, but someone might come after him anyway -- might want his car, or his cargo. The gun is tiny, acm-styled, lightweight, the kind of gun a fashion designer would carry; it fires teensy darts that fly at five times the velocity of an SR-71 spy plane, and when you get done using it, you have to plug it into the cigarette lighter, because it runs on electricity. The Deliverator never pulled that gun in anger, or in fear. He pulled it once in Gila Highlands. Some punks in Gila Highlands, a fancy Burbclave, wanted themselves a delivery, and they didn't want to pay for it. Thought they would impress the Deliverator with a baseball bat. The Deliverator took out his gun, centered its laser doohickey on that poised Louisville Slugger, fired it. The recoil was immense, as though the weapon had blown up in his hand. The middle third of the baseball bat turned into a column of burning sawdust accelerating in all directions like a bursting star. Punk ended up holding this bat handle with milky smoke pouring out the end. Stupid look on his face. Didn't get nothing but trouble from the Deliverator. Since then the Deliverator has kept the gun in the glove compartment and relied, instead, on a matched set of samurai swords, which have always been his weapon of choice anyhow. The punks in Gila Highlands weren't afraid of the gun, so the Deliverator was forced to use it. But swords need no demonstrations.
