I don’t think i’d have as much of a problem with it if it didn’t remind me of 40k. They put skulls everywhere. They have some sort of fetish for them. I’ve been using the 1st ed. Hsien.
@Sedral That could've been a neat way to do it as well. Let's say there's two Hulang sculpts and they have different patterns carved in. Nice character to it.
Think people would understand if I use an Igao in Dahshat for a Hulang? I think it would be cool to have something similar but NA2 related.
I like the nubs on the helmet, but I'm not crazy about the skull. Might putty that into a featureless facemask.
This is more Army of Two and military shooters for me, and I think that's more what the sculptor was going for. The Skull-helmet or Skull-mask is very common in military shooters and as much as 40K likes their skulls, the skull helmets of the Chaplains are, unless I'm mistaken, more recent thing for GW with one of the the oldest example being an Eldar unit (Deathreapers, specifically Maugan Ra). Spoiler: Army of Two
Skulls on chaplains has been a thing at GW since Rogue trader aka 1st edition. https://images.app.goo.gl/2EhEzinRixk9g6Xk6 Skulls as a shorthand for badass has been around for ever in tabletop games. Just look at the original Atlas in battletech. 100 ton nuclear powered death machine with a skull the size of a bungalo on top of it. I think a lot of people may be burned out on skulls with all the examples that are being listed. Personally, there aren't a lot in infinity and I think it fits. I still have a little room for "skull faces soldier is scary" in my personal preferneces, so I like the design. Though I will probably hold off on this model as I think the pose is meh and I'd prefer SMGs akimbo like the Scots guard model.
He looks a lot better painted. I think there's a lot that can be done with the head. In a way, it's a bit of an homage to Shaolin/Buddhist shaved heads. And some monastic traditions did ritual scaring on the head to represent Buddhist beliefs. The triangle might even be used for the third eye.
Well, I feel it's a rather unpopular opinion here but I do like his helmet. Stylised skull just as I would imagine it IRL (in contrast to the way too explicit sculpts of 40k most of the time).
Well, those are really trivial to remove if you don't like them. Much better than, say, dealing with poses or weapon designs you're not fan of.
I do think that he's just a great simple HI with sword and combi. The Skull-like helment will not look skull-like if it's not painted as such.
I think with some decent free-handing on the skull, you could make it look less overtly... overt. Now, going to the subject of actual usability, as much as I've lamented its practical functionality in the face of its otherwise really cool and funky toolkit, I'm wondering if there might be some good synergy in vanilla SunTze builds. Could SunTze's enormous degree of control over the deployment phase of the game help to mitigate some of the worst aspects of Huey's vulnerabilities? Now, the Hulang will still suffer from some piss poor optimization and an extremely confusing statline for a heavy infantry, but perhaps there's a fighting chance for him down this avenue... (it's really a shame SunTze can't be used in IA, I feel he could do a lot there, even in spite of his enormous price tag).
I tried making a "mock" IA list with Sun Tze using Vanilla. It's not horrible and It's legal too! Yu Jing ────────────────────────────────────────────────── 9 1 SUN TZE Lieutenant (Advanced Command) MULTI Rifle, 2 Nanopulsers, Flash Pulse / Pistol, Knife. That and a good camo specialist. If I wasn't trying to keep to IA models, I would have done something different like a Guilang. The point of it was trying to do IA with Sun Tze.
