Because Crits happen, and a Kamau will still go down after one crit. An ORC will stay up after one crit.

Are there any concerns out there about running into ARO pieces which we can't beat with our usual firelane-dominating tools?

After all, with no smoke that's basically a game ending problem.

Well that's why PanO Vanilla is expected to bring a HMG Tag or Swiss all the time.
A Nisse is good value, but can fall flat on it's face rather easily, so you'll have to solve some problems with the real hard hitters.

Well, I think that the main thing about it is the table designing. A good table set up will give you the possibility to move in order to avoid to face the Defensive Core your opponent is playing, but maybe at the cost of some cautious movements and orders through terrain zones.

If the table is at least playable, the other thing to remember is that we have a lot of tools to ignore at least for a time those mighty ARO. Between TO Camo, Albedo and Eclipse, there is always a way to walk through AROs without that much worry.
Second thing to note is that except PanO, only Yu Jing provide a "gotcha" frightening and mighty long range ARO. So I would say that having second and third attack pieces at other places on the table is how you get yourself out of the mess that can be going out of DZ for us. You don't need the best ones. You need ones mighty enough to break through your opponent lines while not being too costly. If it is a specialist, it is a bonus but it is not necessary.
That's how I analyse this at least. That's why a lot of our usually dismissed units can shine. Since you're not going to fight the best troops of your opponent at first but want to force him to make mistakes, you don't need Swiss Guard or Cutter for this job. Every troop between the 20 to the high 50 points bracket can fit those requirements depending if you prefer quality or orders.
For example, I pretty rely on Albedo Black Friar and Seraph HMG in MO at the moment for this job but Dart, NCO Teutonic, FK, De Fersen, KotHS and Hospitallers can do this too. Since list building doesn't reflect that much how the list will be played during the game, I really think now flexibility is better than straight firepower. Jack of all trades can always exploit something they are better at rather than an ultra optimised shooting trooper. Expandable but competent troops can harass your opponent effectively enough to let him bleed dry without risking that much.
That's pretty how Ariadna and Haqqislam play but they don't have our ability to use very few orders to do the same job because our troops are more expensive but also more effective.
I remember someone (I think it was Eciu) who told us he and his opponent were only trading blows through expendable rambos while both list cores were mostly intact. This is a way to approach the game pretty effective right now. You want to force your opponent to reveal all he as for little cost until your main attack piece has all the cards in its hands to strike once and for all.

The entire point of a good list is to deal with any friggin table you can throw at it.

For PanO that means shoot things harder till they die, because that is our reality without Smoke.
If you're getting lucky you can solve problems differently or the table gives you some leverage. Not ending up royally screwed by matchups and table layouts is the essential point of a good list.

I think this is pretty well covered with linked Bagh Mari/Kamau sniper/hmg. Those guys can outshoot just about anything. The Swiss hmg is arguably the best gunfighter in the game, and even a fusilier hmg has roughly equal odds of taking out a linked Kamau.

Not as sure about MO, but the other sectorials still feel like they’re in a solid place.

Also, remember that if something like a Kamau or Haidao are holding down a lane, a coordinated order can be a fantastic option.

    Yep!

Because you cannot split your burst in ARO, even if you're a Total Reaction HMG.

And that's where Teutons still are the best due to BS 14 panzerfaust. I really have to try this one one day.

    Good points all.

One of my biggest concerns with Varuna list design (as I look forward to the next season) is that a lot of the units I'm planning on using as "point" just don't have the raw strength to muscle through like a Swiss HMG does.

But that's just something that I'll have to accept, or go with the ORC HMG.

I mean, I guess there's an argument for this:

TEUTONIC KNIGHT (Fireteam: Haris, Specialist Operative) Combi Rifle, Panzerfaust / Pistol, AP CCW. (0.5 | 36)
TEUTONIC KNIGHT Combi Rifle, Panzerfaust / Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 36)
TEUTONIC KNIGHT Combi Rifle, Panzerfaust / Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 36)

    Over this:

JOAN OF ARC Lieutenant MULTI Rifle, Nanopulser / Pistol, DA CCW. (+1 | 50)
MAGISTER KNIGHT Panzerfaust, Light Shotgun / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 23)
MAGISTER KNIGHT Panzerfaust, Light Shotgun / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 23)
MAGISTER KNIGHT Panzerfaust, Light Shotgun / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 23)

I'm not sure it's a great argument... but there's probably something there.

The latter costs a whole 11 pts more?

Can you split it with Neurocinetics?

All of the special Skills and rules that allow >B1 for BS Attack AROs have a clause that prevents splitting B.
Link 3 Man bonus, Supressive Fire, Neurokinetics and Total Reaction included.

A Kamau hmg will almost always have better odds. With shock immunity, there are very few things that will be able to kill him outright in the reactive turn. Even against something like a Haidao, it’s really close. Plus, you can break him away from the link and get aggressive and he’ll do well against most unlinked targets.

Also remember that the sensor Zulu Cobra can triangulated surprise shot with an assault pistol through patsy’s nimbus plus with three dice on 10s.
The trauma doc is actually a really useful profile to have on the table.

Definitely not a good argument :/

Im willing to put most weird units in lists, but our boys in black and white face too much internal competition and 108 points for a gimmick you can use twice feels really blegh

Only if it's in a full Fireteam. And that means exposing your Fireteam as you advance (if your opponent deployed smart).

That's a solid option, but remains order intensive, it's nice to have in your pocket 'though.

Hell, there are even good arguments for Bipandra these days.

I did not say it was a good argument.

But with the option to either run as a Haris OR use a Co-Ordinated Order to hit a tough target, it IS dangerous to basically anything.

I tend to play my core teams fairly statically. Typically, not always, if I can’t get to my opponent’s overwatching linked model in 2-3 orders with a gunner from my core team, I should be able to maneuver around it. This is why I typically get most of my work done, especially early on, with Nagas and Dart, Zulus and Crocmen, or Hexas. Pano can’t obscure things like most other armies, which is where camo and TO because such important tools.

Sometimes, it is possible for my opponent to overwatch a position so well that I can’t get to it with a marker safely and I can’t shoot my way out with a core from my deployment zone. That’s when I need to get creative. AD is a wonderful tool for that kind of situation. Getting a model up the table with mines, e/m grenades, or a direct template weapon (I’m looking at you Auxilia) then becomes the best option. It can be less order efficient, but then I know my opponent is really good.

Sadly, my head is in Guild Ball.
I went from one game a week and pushing hard for the local leage, making 3 lists for every game and refining refining refining to complete apathy.
It came a day after Dedalus Fall, saw all the silliness, watched as Ramha can PanO better than PanO (and with smoke), and just...... dont know.
Hope the hart comes back, this is a game that have consumed my every moment even in vacations, but after the last months of CB showing a disregard for rules, the power creep/leap.... they really dont seem to have a plan.
this past week never opened the Army and instead of coming to the forum at any free chance just come and check every odd day now.
    Its sad man, really sad

We all experience burn out and I felt a similar way when the update dropped – after a few games with some friends I quickly realized it wasn't so bad. The new stuff is good, but expensive.

I'm sure I speak for everyone here and say that we hope you can get back into infinity soon – your insight is always something to consider and something I know I enjoy reading
