I have commented on the situation offhandedly to my manager, not as a critique of the coworker, but more asking for guidance on how I can be more involved in my role as a lead so it actually involves leadership rather than just a "high performance" level of the same work that everyone does. Her response was to get me a shiny new full-color cubicle placard with my title prominently displayed and sending me in her stead to any meetings she didn't feel like attending.

The first part seemed to me like it was kinda condescending, but she is a former professor, so I justified it as just the way they do things.

Also, the issue with escalating is that the regional director (her immediate superior) is a close personal friend and I would feel like I'm doing the same thing they are, so it would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

The way I see it my choices are:
    1. Keep performing above the curve and try to snatch any chance to climb to a point where I don't have to deal with these people
    2. Start applying for new jobs
My girlfriend is a strong proponent of the second

Not a comfy place you're at mate.

If you feel like you're able to then go ahead with both 1 and 2.

I use to say that everything in life is a matter of balance. There good and bad in everything, if your job balance is tilting on the bad side, it's a sign I would not ignore.

I will dare to speak for everyone's here and wish you all the best for the future.

I appreciate the advice and the well-wishing

It's pretty sad to see things take a turn for the worse here, it's been a great 4 years and definitely the best job I've ever had but sometimes moving on is for the best

It is honorable of you to consider to omit this possibility, however this is not a friend service, but an actual problem. No matter if their superior is your close friend, he is still a superior who is the person to report your problems to. Don't feel bad about it, but keep it professional. Your actions have showed that you are completely capable of seperating your personal feelings from professionalism. Do not let others push you out of something you like doing.

Yeah no that's the plan, business is actually doing quite well in my area, so i'm going to be working on my Resume then start applying. only issue is i've been through five managers in ~3 years so i'm probably somewhat behind where someone should be after three years in the quality field but its worth a fucking shot.

Escalate it. They want to use nepotism to cheat the system, don't feel guilty about following the correct procedure where she would not.

Tell your boss that you really didn't want to bring it to his attention because he is your friend (and so it feels like you're doing the same thing they are), but you felt you had to because of how dangerous this was for the company.

Because I'm pretty sure that after you left (rather than continue to put up with her shit) and the various VIPs you've been dealing with had to deal with a moron, they'd cancel their contracts with your company!

My manager and I had a 1 on 1 where we touched upon yearly raises and I found out I was going to receive a 2% rather than the 15% I was promised when I took the position of lead so I got a bit mad and gave her a point for point of my grievances. She did seem receptive and told me she will make the necessary adjustments (and that she'll try to get me my money), the other coworker has been behaving and all seems okay at least since last Thursday.

I've got my resume updated just in case.

Well, while we are on the subject of work wtf's.

My wife has been working part time for a local agency. Her boss came to talk to her, and offered her a full time position, with a significant pay raise. The extra hours would cause some difficulty with balancing family life, but we discussed it and decided the money would be worth it. My wife told her boss she would accept the position. Several days go by with no word. My wife asks what the status is. Turns out her boss forgot to check with HR before offering my wife the job. HR is not sure if there is a position, or how much it would pay. Also they said if the position is offered, it has to be opened up, and my wife will have to apply and interview it. This being a government agency, HR could make a decision next week, or next year. So now we are stuck waiting on HR to decide what it wants to do.

    Yaay.

Seems like only way to ensure job stability these days is be the bureaucrats writing all the hiring rules. They can't sack you, because then no one would have a bloody clue how to hire someone to replace you.

Except locally they pay HR about as much as an unskilled worker.

My mom has had a massive work WTF for the last few years where she has been bullied and harassed (to the point of being sick for months) by a work colleague who was then promoted to be her boss. She has written testimony from multiple colleagues that she has been badly mistreated for a long time - they had tribunals and stuff where her c*nt boss told HR my mom is "incompetent", sadly HR took her boss's side initially. My mom was livid, 40 years plus of experience in pediatric nursing and midwifery, set up a completely new children's department at a private hospital in London to be told towards the end of her career by some NHS lackey that she's incompetent.

Luckily the nursing union have been supporting her, they said they've never seen a cut and dry case like this completely ignored by HR. Thankfully she has been offered another job somewhere much better finally after years of looking. Union are trying to get her some kind of pay out, union lawyers have said there is a big case to sue as they have a lot of evidence but my mom doesn't want to affect any future work.

Get new job she can retire from first, then sue assholes personally into poverty. Both the Harasser and HR.

I.... I think I know how Lovecraftian novels characters feel. I think I discovered government is run by fishmen, worshiping old gods and looking to propagate insanity and death. Consider following text to likely be last part of my sanity.

I work in IT sector, network administration and system maintenance. One of the systems I am contracted to work with is responsible for Ambulances in my country, dispatch for 112. While the job is overall boring and focuses on keeping communication channels going, recently something changed.
It all started a while ago(four months), when government formed new bureau meant to help "nationalizing" Ambulance services in the country, giving said bureau administrative privileges and control over databases and system. So far, pretty normal, as after all, they want to have the control. Point was, they demanded full admin privileges on devices that weren't part of their system, but were "lend" to serve as at the start of it, they didn't buy enough machines. That is still reasonable.... and then the godda&*%$^&(^&*&& proceed to use said privileges to redo firewall settings on every device they have access to. Results were not as bad as one could foresee, we managed to regain access to devices we were cut off from., but that was only a sign of things to come. It was proof, those people were not caring, or thinking what they are doing.

About three weeks ago, we got an email, seemingly innocent one. It is a procedure of naming new accounts and numeration of structure within system. The kicker came with final paragraphs:
"All accounts should be now named accordingly....*insert procedure here*" Innocent, right? System that we are using is not allowing change of account name, which was quite foreboding. That e-mail was followed with another one, about four days later:
"By 1st of April, whole of current system will be moving towards version x.0" Well, I have around thousand users, and of course, database changed format including new fields. We politely ask if any data import is planned. Answer:
"The procedure was explained in *Insert name of Naming Standard document*" Within system IDs, were merged for whole region with no one to coordinate, and three different dispatch centers competing with overlapping numbers. System is of course protected from unauthorized access, so we get to manually input new accounts, since due to competition for said IDs? Every time they overlap there is a message error, blocking automats. Alright, ton of work, but doable....

But we were given access to x.0 system only three days ago, due to delays. So we crunch, inputting accounts, getting the old setting back from new system, preparing the less than technically capable people (who admittedly save people lives, so I am more than okay with them not being most IT-savy. That is my job.) Ton of work, likely a disastrous result since a ton of users so used to their accounts and normal work routine will have to swap. Of course: new system has wonderful quirk that makes accounts ineditable, they inform us week before deadline they will be changing numbers of stations we should have access to, still central bureau is not responding to our e-mails.

Then C'thulu: We (as my part of the country) are not alone. They do it in whole damn country, in one night, during one hour, every dispatch will attempt switching to new system at same hour. System responsible for ambulances, will attempt swapping over during one hour. After most of local admins were given at best week to properly move old data to new system. The week we got for moving data, was apparently meant for testing on our end too.

They must be fishmen, otherwise it would be humans making that disastrous decision. Humans thinking they are improving and making it better and going for the most insane system swap in... point where people lives are at stake.
Tell me they are frigging fishmen...

They should be shot and their successors should have to clean up the remains so they know the consequences of fucking up a system responsible for saving human lives.

Yesterday was a public holiday for us as the Prince of Wales and his other 'alf dropped by.

They turned up in an RAF jet that the local airport didn't have a suitable set of stairs for, so they were delayed getting off the plane by two hours whilst they modified a staircar to fit!
