Hello everybody! I'm starting to adventure myself in this brave and wide world of the Steel Phalanx, and I noticed no lists bring Hector. I think the plasma rifle profile in a myrmidon link would be great, shooting 4 shots with plasma, so, double saves. That's 8 saves! I think the reason for no Hectors in any lists is blonde and armed, but what do you guys think? Have anyone used him instead of Achilles?
He is expensive and if you're taking a killing LT like Achilles you don't really benefit from stategos because your LT was going to use that order anyway. That said I actually love Fielding him. Plasma rifles are deadly. I've vaporized Orc Harris's in a single shot. To get the most out of him he needs to be linked, which makes for an expensive link. I like running him in elite 10 man lists with Myrmidons. Some people like to use thorakiti as cheap bodies to prop him up.
When folks run Achilles against me, I know exactly what to expect: he's coming, by himself, with a spitfire, and my only task is to hang on until I can get an encirclement and batter him to death. Achilles, by his nature, really simplifies a game. Hector, on the other hand, rolls with a link consisting of whoever the heck he wants, and fires hell templates everywhere with impunity. The plasma rifle is light-years beyond the spitfire and doesn't cost any SWC. He's a well-balanced fighter who provides zero suggestions for how to cope.
up until recently he has been my go to LT embedded in a somewhat defensive thorakitai link, and lock down an area and when the the main assault piece falls over he usually moves out and cleans up what ever is left on the table. the mix of plasma rifle, stun grenades and an x-visor tend to make incredibly annoying to dislodge. especially in suppression.
In steel phalanx I always use Héctor. I like big A in vanilla aleph. My current steel list I ran Héctor with Myrmidons Steel team 6 ──────────────────────────────────────────────────GROUP 1 10 HECTOR Lieutenant Plasma Rifle, Nanopulser, Stun Grenades + 1 TinBot A / Heavy Pistol, EXP CC Weapon. I really like him as a character (he's my favorite one in Illiad), but i have little experience with him. I took him a few times as Lt in vanilla, when i wanted the sheer firepower of the plasma rifle (i was expecting several xeodrons). But i found him to be a little lacking in vanilla, not being able to link is a problem. I also took him in SP with both thorakitai and myrmidons links. He was a bit of a weakness with myrmidons, being hackable and without ODD. He performed really well with thorakitai. Contrary to Thrasimedes, he does not have ODD, but he can tank a hit and still fight. He can have a thorakitai engineer with him, and the thorakitai have a wide weapon choice. Never tried the dactil link. It sounds interresting, but perhaps a bit too expensive. It would be really nice if Hector alone could build a mixed enomotarkos team (ex. Hector + dactyl engineer + thorakitai feuerbach + Machaon)
I think for the most part Achilles or Ajax are going to be a better bet in your list, but I did use Hector in a tournament for the Biotechvoir mission.
I think he's better in steel where the strategos order can be used to good effect moving a whole link around, and he can benefit from a link. (Though I still use him occasionally in vanilla because plasma is so great). My favorite way to play him is in an aggressive link. Admittedly that's a risky way to play. Usually his link includes a CoC officer and Mac, then either a spitfire or chain rifle as points allow. Mac can top off some wounds if some one goes nwi, and score objectives. Generally chewing through both a linked Hector and linked officer in 1 turn is a tall order for many opponents. Normally the rest of the list is a thorakiti link and light support like Scylla. Don't forget Hector has MA(stealth!) So frequently being hackable is less of a liability if you're careful about placement. I've ran lists like this to good effect before too, but I like it less. Remember you can reload the panzerfaust on acmon with the probot. A B2 bs 13 panzerfaust can do a lot of damage, but of course ideally you're engaging at shorter range where the plasma rifle can clean house. For me the most recent ITS season has placed a higher premium on killing which as others have mentioned in his price bracket there is no competing with Achilles. In prior seasons before the single combat group protection and larger emphasis on specialist play I prefered him at that price to Achilles specifically when paired with Dactyls as a hard to move method of delivery specialists late game.
70 points. The problem of Hector is his cost. At that price you *really* want something more than simply BS 13 with no mods or visors. Yes, plasma is fantastic. His skillset is good. But it is just far too expensive for what he brngs to the table.
Yup. I love the model. I’ve used it a bunch. Stun grenades seem cool. You know who’s got stun grenades for half the cost along with forward deployment? Thrasymedes. That’s who. Really though, a 70 point gun platform needs to be able to win gunfights. Hector can beat mooks, but he struggles against top tier pieces. For a couple of points more, Achilles has very few problems killing almost anything.
<points upwards> Basically this. Hector is not good enough a gunfighter to justify his high cost and he is a pure gunfighter. Taking a fireteam makes him even more expensive. No marker state for added safety, no visual MODs to win gunfights, no specialist profile, no insanely high MOV value to rampage through the enemy line, nothing.
Does his plasma rifle not compensate him well enough? Im just curious because the plasma rifle seems nuts. Ignore cover armor because its impact template and fire at burst 4 in the fireteam means the opponent is taking anywhere from 2 to 8 arm saves anytime they lose a ftf to hector
It does. His raison d'etre isn't to outshoot Achilles, but to enable a solid fireteam that can advance into contested territory, and then to act as a lynchpin of that team. Achilles can't do that - he's a superior gunfighter, but he has to go in without backup. Hector can take his own Doc and Engineer with him, and then provide covering fire and draw enemy attention while they go about scoring objectives.
Nailed it. Hector spitfire is the best way of towing up those dactyls onto an objective and is a good gunner and cc fighter and can hold himself in the midfield against a lot of threats. If you're doing a button pressing mission, that link gets work done and that's what wins games
@Stiopa and @csjarrat have it. At times he's a disappointing solo piece, in vanilla he can be pinned down by the likes of a support ware TR bot. In steel he comes into his own. With link bonuses his gun becomes deadlier and the support he brings with him in a link is what makes the difference. Achilles is the greater Rambo. Hector is the team player, who doesn't frenzy.
But then he does not have the easy discount that any team member can get with no drawback ^^ Well i just wish Hector could do a mixed enomotarkos team, ie being able to include myrms, thora and dactyls in his team at the same time.
