Cavalry often carried warhammers or maces, rather than pokey weapons that could get stuck in a target. Steel haft about 24" long, head about 2" square and often having some ugly points on it instead of a flat face, and then a 6+" long pick on the back side of the hammerhead as a counterbalance. They'd leave hideous wounds... It'd be the secondary weapon after the lance, with the knight's sword being the last resort.
