Can you use surprise shot with a Hacking Attack?

As Surprise Shot says BS Attack on the top left, of the block in the wiki.

    but, It also says.

In a Face to Face Roll between the user's BS Attack or Hacking Attack and an enemy, the enemy suffers a -3 MOD to the relevant Attribute. This -3 MOD is added to other MODscaused by Camouflage and Hiding, Range, Cover, etc.

Just making sure, we don't play it wrong

    Isn't it pretty explicit?

Its isn't pretty explicit, other wise I wouldn't be asking.

Why does it have the BS attack tag at the top of the box? Are all Hacking Attacks BS attacks?

The BS Attack label is a bit of a mystery, but the text box is pretty clear with this one.

No, hacking attacks are not BS Attacks, but a surprise hacking attack might be.

Trolling here: you can FtF a hacking attack with bullets... or a sword! XD

Anyway, I'd say that the Surprise Shot is considered a BS attack regardless of its original skill being a hacking attack or a BS attack.

Wait, I thought you can, as long as you meet all criteria to declare a BS Attack or CC Attack?

Yes you do, the trolling part was about spawning an argument of what is a hacking attack, a comms attack, a BS attack or a melee attack? Or all three? XD

Reminds me of CC Special Skills argument from the old forums. Accusations of trolling were flying wildly, but I still stand by the reading that CC Attack is not the only thing triggering them :yum:

    Anyway, moving on.

Okay cool, so would TO:Camouflage work vs a Surprise Shot Attack, even though a hacking attack was used for surprise shot?

Good attempt! Sadly, right now no, since hacking attacks do not require LoF and you can "surprise shoot" from behind total cover XD

    See Jammer.
Apparently, the MODs from visibility abilities like TO Camo, ODD or Low Visibility Zones do not actually depend only on being targeted by a BS Attack, like it says in the rules, but by the skill/weapon used requiring LOF AND being a BS Attack.

Isn't it because Jammer is a Comms Attack, but is also a BS attack in the discription?

Comm Attacks is a trait that allows you to Reset in response. It does not preclude other properties from appearing, technically.

    Jammer rules say:
"The user of a Jammer can declare a BS Attack using his WIP Attribute against a target within his ZoC."

Jammer does not require LoF, so TO would have the same effect as against Speculative Fire... And if a building is not in the way, the Muttas have a regular Chain Rifle, an E/M Chain Rifle, a pistol, and smoke.

I was pretty sure that Speculative Fire with template ignores those things because you don't actually target the enemy with them, so their defensive rules are not applied. This does not works with Jammers.

Speculative Shot always requires a target, you just get to ignore any visual MODs as long as you place the template off-centre.

In any case, from the current 1.3 FAQ:

When performing an Attack with a Jammer, is the roll affected by the negative MOD of ODD or Camouflage, for example?

No, in the case of an attack that does not require LoF, the negative MODs are not applied.

Yes, it requires a target you must cover with template somehow, I should've specified that. But it seems that instructions in that "dealing with ODD/ARM" text box give away the logic behind mechanics - you treat your blast focus as if it was your target for the purpose of resolving an attack (you measure range to it, and apparently you also apply defensive mods of whatever is under the focus as well).

    That's all lyrics though.

More on topic - I think that FAQ entry should be added to Jammer page in the wiki.

And a question: do rules ever mention that you get to ignore certain non-visibility-zone mods (like ODD, Mimetism etc.) if you don't have/need a LoF to the target, as a general rule? I haven't stumbled upon that in rules sections I've checked: CH, FoF, Spec. Fire etc. Am I missing something?

    Nope.

The chosen target is still the target (as confirmed by who is affected if you roll a critical) and whatever is under the centre of the off-centre template has no effect on the rolls made. There's also nothing that lets you measure range to the centre of the template instead of the target, which has upsides and downsides...
