I am extremely curious as to how this game works

Do all players start $20k in debt?

The concept of being able to afford property in London made the original Monopoly too fantastical.

It's nice they've made more realistic versions like Middle Earth and Star Wars.

I prefer calling them fart-sniffers after that episode of South Park, like, a decade ago.

Also, it is not a New York magazine, it is a New York City magazine. Two completely different planets.

The sad thing is, I wasn't at first sure if this was satire or for real. I mean it should be satire. Hasbro has gone so far around the bend with monopoly, they just totally don't care. At the risk of sounding like a hipster, I just don't understand how Monopoly is still a thing. I know it is a shit game, you know it is a shit game, I thought everyone knew it was a shit game.

And then last week my wife brought home Monopoly. . .
I was like, 'what is this doing in the house!?' She wants to play it. . .
    You think you know a person . . .
I am afraid one of my friends might see it . . .

as a 23 year-old I can honestly say I've never played monopoly and have no interest in it. I'm afraid it's still a staple for a normies' "game night"

And that is the problem. When you try and get people to come to a game night, and they say they don't like board games. If you ask them why, Monopoly is almost always one of the games they give as example

Hasboro needs to just complete the Monopoly circle and release a game about making a game to criticize capitalism and having the game ripped off, republished, and rebranded for over a century.
(I swear at this point the history of the game is the only interesting aspect left.)

I think it's a combination of sheer inertia, and the stories that monopoly generates that keep it popular. Like no-one remembers the game of monopoly, but they remember their grandad eating the little pewter cannon out of anger or something.

Like, as a real world example, I don't remember the game itself, but I remember getting annoyed at always landing on my mate's owned properties all the time and removing my shirt and throwing it at him while shouting 'you've had all my money, you might as well have the shirt off my back as well!'
(note: it was all in jest, not an actual moment of sore-loser nerdrage, also there were numerous beers involved)
(additional note: it was also the day our circle of uni friends invented the game of strip monopoly)

A few years ago, one of my nephews complained about having to learn powerpoint at school ...

My response: "In my day, we had corporal punishment. I'd prefer it to learning powerpoint. "

Risk and Monopoly are those games I remember playing, but never actually finishing.
It's like everyone got too fed up to continue.

Ironically the 'Legacy Risk' game released few years ago, while built upon Risk basics, added enough new rules to actually make it fun, even without the 'Legacy' component. (The 'Legacy' bit was fun if you have an appropriately minded regular group)

The major upgrade? Victory conditions that don't require the total annihilation of everyone! Even with the normal table talk we would finish a 5-man game in around 3 hours. ( We had one unusual game only last 30 minutes! )

It would take a better man than I to come up with rules to make Monopoly a fun game.
