Out of models to paint: best stripping method

I use Simple Green, though Castrol Superclean or Purple Power degreasers are also really good.

You will probably want a good set of brushes, I have a set of steel, brass, and nylon brushes intended to clean firearms, I use the brass and nylon brushes and sometimes steel dental picks for particularly stuck places.

 

I second the Biostrip, it removes the paint efficiently and you can just leave the models in it.

 

Sounds like a lot of work that could be avoided with more efficient solvent.

 

I'm willing to spend more elbow grease for lower toxicity. Acetone or brake fluid you don't want getting on your skin. Simple Green is safe enough to use to wash your hands in.

 

It's working

 

I picked up a $20 ultrasonic cleaner on amazon and it does a great job annihilating paint. Compared to acetone:

- Works really quickly, ready to scrub in 15 minutes
- You can use whatever as a solvent, no fumes
- Doesn't break down superglue

I'll use either, depending on my goals for that model. I also understand acetone can run *in* the ultrasonic cleaner if you're brave enough, but it isn't on my radar.

 

One trick with things like acetone is putting them in a small cup or ziplock bag, along the item to clean, then place this in the water of the cleaner. That way you reduce the quantity used, keep it separate from the machine, and in the case of the bag, unable to evaporate.
