Hey guys, I was wondering how many active players each of the larger tabletop game has and how many tournaments are run. I don’t have a very specific figure of merit I am looking for, but something like pie charts for sales of GW / Privateer Press / CB / .... by country, pie charts of listed tournaments by system for some countries etc. would be interesting to see. Has anyone seen any data collections going in this direction? So far my use of google didn’t turn up anything. Cheers!
The best you're going to get are the ICv2 figures, but they're just for North American sales and don't include all sales channels. As far as I can tell, nobody in the industry has reliable figures for numbers of players.
Thanks for the input! Maybe it is possible to see the number of tournaments held in a specific country? In Germany most tournaments are posted on one site. They allow you to rank the games by popularity: https://www.tabletopturniere.de/games (Press "Beliebtheit", which is popularity in German) But afaik they are counting from since the beginning of the website, which causes Warhammer Fantasy to still be the second most popular game. The full hall of fame would be Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Xwing, Warma/Hordes, Bloodbowl, Infinity, Mordheim, Middle-earth, Flames of War, 9th Age, Age of Sigmar, Space Hulk, Gothic, Necromunda, Eden, Malifaux, Saga. I used the same website to check, how many tournaments are announced (and not cancelled) for some systems in the months of October and November: Warhammer 40k: 26 X Wing: 17 9th Age: 10 Infinity: 8 Warma/Hordes: 8 Age of Sigmar: 8 SAGA: 5 Malifaux: 5 Guildball: 5 Star Wars Armada: 3 Dropfleet Commander: 2 Freebooters Fate: 2 Warhammer Fantasy: 1 Bloodbowl: 1 Flames of War: 0 Dropzone Commander: 0 Not sure how representative my little sample here is, but it indicates that Xwing is the only game successfull enough to nearly challenge 40k. I'd assume that this is mainly due to the fact that they operate somewhere between what we'd consider board games and tabletop games. Then more or less on one level we find Infinity (which I'd like to see way more up there), 9th Age (which I didn't think would become a thing at all), Warma/Hordes (which probably used to do way better) and Age of Sigmar (which seems to be in an ok place considering what it is). Would be cool if there are ways to gather similar samples from other places.
Here's the article, it shows how many ITS registered events (Tournaments, Leagues and One-Shots) happened last Season. https://www.infinitythegame.com/blo...tics-analyzing-the-organized-game-of-season-9
Thanks! This is also some really interesting data. Our German scene is developing quite well it seems.
