Thought I'd start posting some WIP pictures on my construction site table. Mainly to put some pressure on myself, but also hopefully getting some input, ideas and energy! The initial idea was to create collapsible buildings to be able to pack the terrain neatly, which lead to the idea of collapsible concrete and steel frames, each floor accessible and playable. Turned out to be a bit too messy, but I still found the construction site concept quite cool. The real start came when my brother found me these Volvo construction machines. A bit too small in scale, but after removing the driver cab to make them look autonomous you don't really notice. First project, the forklift. Some painting left to be done. And the other container. Some painting left on this as well. Some CAD projects to be laser cut: First, the modular steel frame, made in 1,5 mm mdf, hoping it will be strong enough. This is supposed to be the centerpiece LOS-blocker, possibly two of them. Walls and floors will be added as needed, so that it blocks LOS like a solid building, but still keeping the full volume playable. Cover will be added in the shape of the usual crates, barrels etc. Work light Fences. Some work left on the construction barracks... I'm thinking consoles will be added in the form of holo-maps of the site projected from some form of table. Looking forward to that project! C&C welcome! Ideas on what to add, or what planet this could be fluffwise?
Fantastic start! I can't wait to see this unfold, the first couple of painted pieces seem really promising :)
Thanks! Progress is slow and unsteady... Finished what I guess will be a massive piece of scatter terrain.
Ripping the cab off those construction toys is a fantastic idea. They don't look out of place at all!
Awesome execution of tarpaulin, how did you do it? Also, if that is your Yu Jing could you post more of them? I'd really like to see more of that Sun Tze!
Looks great. Of course, a crane of some sort would be an excellent addition. Other things to add could be a section of excavated ground, a security booth and with vehicle barrier (https://www.securedbymac.com/turnstile-blog/topic/modular-guard-booth-with-vehicle-barrier-arms), portable toilets, a food truck with seating, traffic cones, pallets of building materials, generators, dumpsters for building debris. @Oestvang Lots of great ideas, thanks! A knocked over porta potty will be the first to be added! @Krofna The tarpaulin is a few layers of paper napkins soaked with watered down PVC glue. I remember creating banners in WH:FB way back, but learned from @Kukuruznik that it works for larger stuff as well. Regarding the minis, not super excited about my paint job on them, but its getting better. I'm very happy about my dont-bring-a-knife-to-a-gunfight conversions though. The myrm officer is my Sophotect btw, hate the official model...
Man, those tarpaulins over the frames are a really effective LoS blocker without putting a bunch of bulk into the model. Looks like a decent bit of interior-hiding possibility without being so deep they get fiddly.
Yup, which is also the main USP for the steel frames. Most of the table will be accessible while still providing LOS-block.
Progress! I've got some prototypes to share with you, most of which actually turned out great in their first iteration. Still have a giant backlog of CAD-stuff to be exported and cut though. Luckily, the design and fabrication is my favorite part of the process, while I will try to outsource the paint job... Well, actually, glueing the beams together wasn't a favorite part of the process either... ...but the concept worked like a charm! Needs some floors and walls to straighten the angles out, though. Holosurf(TM) tables for objective markers. This is the third and best iteration. Gave up on getting an even lighting and settled for centered lighting... The generator was the first of @Oestvangs ideas to be realised. Not totally sure about the fencing, might need some alterations. Happy that this came out exactly right! Next time I have a few hours and the laser at my disposal: the Dome, a half-finished indoor park. @Splod, thanks! Thanks for the link! :) Don't suppose you've got the files handy to share for the buildings under construction?
