We do Recon games for newer players or if we're short on time. I'm gonna start doing this instead of my typical (and possibly too brutal for beginners) Bandit/Hellcat 1/2 combo. I think it'll give people a better look at the game and give me some more practical experience with the Gecko.

I'm curious if anyone else has been playing Recon? I find it to be a lot better balancing of low point games.

I run a 2 X Alg, Gecko, 4 X Jag, Massacre list in recon. It absolutely destroys new players but is only ok against older ones.

It's better but it's still not perfect. Ultimately the game gets extremely swingy / prone to Alla strikes at that points.

That's because the game is down to one moment of combat basically. Nothing can really be done about it. That's why I usually do Bandit/Hellcat: The Hellcat is safe until I need it and the Bandit can be carefully deployed behind the Jaguars if I go second.

One difference here is that we play on half width boards instead of the supertiny ones. I think it's a better balance so you don't start on their doorstep.

The rules still gives you 24" between DZs, so it's more that there's less diagonal space or depth to the DZs. Personally I think 3' X 3' is best.

There's several similar but different rulesets. This is my preferred, but even then next time I run a tournie for it we're going to heavily mod the rules.

Well an experienced friend did a paint/teach on my Geckos with me so they are now my best painted guys by a few decades. So I'll be using them a lot lol.

Mechanized Corregidor are go! Start to a new chapter in how I play Corregidor, finally going to use the best engineering team for actual engineering. Hopefully I can get some good reporting on it soon.

I still need to buy Tsyklons/Lunakhods.

I did get 3 Recon in today with the list I had posted. It gives you a good feel for what your star unit can do from a small perspective. Still just crazy about them being a specialist it's so useful.

Funny thing is that over the 3 games the Gecko made 3 successful armor rolls and still did pretty well.

Repairing STR on the Gecko at this scale is totally useful.

Those Geckos turned out great, @loricus! I really dig what you did with the Gecko ammo bracelet on the Clockmaker's? base. Very nice bit of basing, easy to do, great idea.

I haven't played any Recon at all. We have a pretty stable meta here, without a huge influx of new players. The newer folks are already pretty comfortable with 300 point games and are just sort of working out the rhythm of a full on ITS scenario.

I should try it with some veterans just to have a change of pace, and will definitely try it with new players once the next round of recruits show up. I've got a test subject in mind already. I'll report back with details.

Correct. Bakunin does education and implants for 15 wip engineering. Corregidor does a big ass robot arm.

Put a small Gecko logo on her arm, she's my Gecko pit crew. Her original model had insanely tiny arms so I'm happy to find a use for her.

We often run it as a mid-week tournie. 3 games ~4hrs without pressure.

Or just as a way to squeeze in 2 X games on a 6 X 4 table. With 3 X 6x4 tables you can squeeze in 3 full sized games and 2 X Recon if you put them edge-edge. We're kinda outgrown our main place, but given its central location we can't really move either

Huh. Recon as a table space compression scheme. Clever! It would be fun to run as a tournament too.

Yeah I've got a lot of Gecko theories running especially getting them to work in combat focused missions. Just need games games and more games. Really looking forward to it.

This is why I don't need to swap factions lol.

I wanted to try MSV2 Haris, active HI led links and Motorbikes. So I was looking at starting YJ... I'm now seriously considering selling my YJ.

There's a perspective where you start by seeing something you like and find a way to play it.
Or you can start with what you can play and find a way to like it.
Or you can have your units taken away...

Nah it's mainly that I can do all that AND have access to cool Nomad units.

I'm actually finding that paying for the wounds has been really good at this level. With my Bandit/Hellcat approach bad rolls or crits just ended it. I tended to either win or lose big.
I've taken more crits than games on the Gecko so far and I've only lost once to a Dog Warrior ARM rolling every hit until I ran out of guys. A lot of ties and narrow wins.

I'll be doing 300 point lists soon. I've used them a lot already but it was as support for a Wildcat link and it just took objectives ans defended the dz (although it was still worth it imo).

I'm 2 games of Recon+ in, and super like it. It's a good change of pace. My limited experience is suggesting to me that Doctors (and Engineers) are pretty important to recover from crits and the like, and that just shooting things with a Medikit can be pretty darned efficient.

This made me think about Hakims, and then it made me think about Tomcats and Zondcats. Does anyone use Zondcats regularly?

I'm kinda unimpressed by the thought of taking them--to me the whole point is board coverage not 6-4MOV. The Zondcat and Hellcat models were a huge part of the reason why I started Nomads in the first place, so never using the Zondcats makes me a little sad. They're not bad they just always get cut to fit in another Morlock, warcor, whatever.
