Hi ! I'm a new (Canadian) Aleph player, from the Montreal area. I've purchased almost all of the Steel Phalanx sectorial, and I'm looking to get the Vedic at release. Now, I'm still learning basic game concepts, but I'm a good reader and I've read quite a bit. What would be the ups and downs of the following SP list? All teh heroz ────────────────────────────────────────────────── 10 2 HECTOR Plasma Rifle, Nanopulser, Stun Grenades + 1 TinBot A / Heavy Pistol, EXP CC Weapon. (0 | 71) EUDOROS Mk12, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 40) AJAX 2 Combi Rifles, Nanopulser / AP Heavy Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 39) MYRMIDON Hacker (Assault Hacking Device) Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0.5 | 31) MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16) MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16) PHOENIX Heavy Rocket Launcher, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Heavy Pistol, DA CCW. (2 | 40) MACHAON Lieutenant Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 38) NETROD Electric Pulse. (0 | 4) NETROD Electric Pulse. (0 | 4) 3 SWC | 299 Points Open in Infinity Army I'm aware it's a little short on models, but it has one Group of 10 regular orders (if the two Netrods , two linked Fireteams and they both are complimentary to some extent. The idea is that one of them is more aggressive, and has the TinBot and the Myrmidon Hacker protecting the two HI models (Ajax and Hector), and Euroros with Number 2 protects the link on the Reactive Turn. Also, Eudoros can throw Eclipse Grenades vs. MSV2. The second Fireteam is designed to provide support fire and secure objectives. Machaon as the Lt. should stay out of danger, Phoenix is meant to do his thing: provide deadly AROs while the two Chain Rifle guys are expensive but useful "cheerleaders" / smoke providers / support pieces. This team also has access to Eclipse Grenades. How good/bad is this list?
It’s horrible. And its fantastic at the same time, because it shows, that you have no grasp of the game yet, so you’re grasping at the straw, that some cool named characters can bully their way through. They probably can’t. Instead of starting out at 300 points. Get some smaller games.. play icestorm.. starter vs. starter - the starters are designed, that you get a good variation of skills/function, so you learn the game gradually, both from what your troops can do, and what your opponent can do. From that you can learn, what aspects of the game, that you like, and start building armies that have synergy.
You want Hector as your lieutenant. It makes the Lt order a regular one - allows you to use it on link team. You need to write lists to specific missions. It has to be focused towards a goal, or more focused lists will beat it. Those notes aside, I feel like you would have a bad time fighting against some common nasties. A noctifer coming out of hidden deployment will ruin your day with a missile. A fiday will deploy nextdoor to your link and drop boarding shotgun love templates. You won’t have the depth to recover. The Myrmidon hacker kinda sucks; it’s just a liability. If you get into hacking range of something worth hacking, you may as well drop smoke and hit it. You’re asking to be redrummed for little return. Lots of smoke; no way to shoot through it - add an agema and stack some mods / deal with nasties like TO camo snipers.
It's a list with a focus on killing things. Not so bad for it actually. What it does not have is a margin for error. You have 10 orders and 3-4 units that need those orders. As soon as cheerleading netrods fall, you became order starved. So they need protection. You have no good ARO piece other than the link team with HRL. Which you don't want babysitting. Your HRL is also the long distance weapon you have, meaning you have to get into midfield. Where you will run into camo of your opponent and litlle to deal with it other than tanking (which you do well) Objectives. I see one (1) unit capable of pressing buttons. No backup. For some missions (quadrant control etc.) this is fine. In short, for "killy" missions, try it. Would guess glorious win or ignoble defeat with no middle ground. For "button pressing" missions, I would not try. Your only strategy here is: wipe opponent, stroll to objective, win. Not recommended. Cheers P.S. Enough lists around here. Get one or two and built: "how do I beat that!" As Aleph, start with Nomad :-)
I like the advice in the post script - go to other pages, find other people's lists and write ones to beat them. Also worthwhile thinking about what your local meta has in it. I.e., I know that I'm likely to have to deal with aggressive infowar, 5-man links with missile launchers in them, and hidden deployment missile launchers. I either need to be able to fight fire w/ fire on the infowar front, or go unhackable (something you can do w/ Phalanx), and I like to take something with overwhelming burst to address the nasty 5-man link AROs. If you can work out a way to handle hidden deployment missile launchers well I'd be happy to hear it - even the possibility of them sometimes wrecks my play :-)
Instead of giving other vague advice or deciding if this is a good or bad list I can explain to you my thought process when building a Steel Phalanx list: 1) Do I want more than 10 orders or is one group enough? If I want more I am going to need a hacker for Lamedh remotes and most likely one Thorakitai link. 2) Do I want to play one of the two big guys? Achilles or Hector? I always try to field Hector with a combination of Hector / Acmon / Dactyl Doctor to remove all remedies from him. If I don't need the big guns I can field another myrmidon link :D 3) Do I have well balanced fire teams? The usual myrmidon link looks like this: Threat / Specialist / Order Monkey Example 1: Ajax / Machaon / Myrmidon Chain Rifle (Aggressive Objective Control) Example 2: Phoenix / Myrmidon Hacker / Myrmidon Chain Rifle (Ranged ARO Denial) Hint: The Myrmidon Hacker is not really great in an assault team, but is great if you want to enable Fireteam3 Bonus on a backend piece like Phoenix and need to field remotes. Example 3: Nesaie Alkê / Paramedic / Forward Observer / Submachine Gun (Mid Range Assault Formation / Classified Support) 4) That one shenanigan piece: Atalanta / Teucer / Penthesilea / Scylla If you are new to the game refrain from using Penthesilea and just go with Atalanta (NOT AN ARO PIECE. GET HER OUT OF SIGHT IN REACTIVE) Maybe try building a list with these ideas in the back of your head.
Remember that myrmidon officer chain of command are specialists too, they can fill the specialist role in the fireteam quite well (and bring eclipse grenades)
For the record: I like your post, I really like the adice you gave, with this sole exception. You don't need order generating REMs to get in the region of 15 orders. Netrods are dirt cheap and easily boost your order count well above 10. Thorakitai are not much more expensive and much more competent (dodging, firefighting and pushing buttons) in more or less all aspects of the game than REMs - and at the same time not exposed to hacking. Consider this list: Argonautica ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 10 1 MACHAON Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 38) MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16) MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16) EUDOROS Mk12, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 40) MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16) MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16) THRASYMEDES (Fireteam: Enomotarchos) Submachine gun, Light Rocket Launcher, Nanopulser, Stun Grenades / Pistol, Shock CCW. (0.5 | 30) THORAKITES (Forward Observer, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13) THORAKITES Paramedic (Medikit, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 14) ATALANTA MULTI Sniper Rifle + TinBot E (Spotter) / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 39) GROUP 2 5 ALKÊ Lieutenant Spitfire, Nanopulser / Pistol, CCW. (1.5 | 25) THORAKITES (Forward Observer, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13) THORAKITES Paramedic (Medikit, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 14) NETROD Electric Pulse. (0 | 4) NETROD Electric Pulse. (0 | 4) 4 SWC | 298 Points Open in Infinity Army 15 orders, 4 fireteams and Atalanta, 6 specialists and almost no-one to hack.
Netrods are unreliable. The complete performance of your team 2 is dependent on getting your 5 orders because Thorakitai are slow. I prefer to place 2 Lamedh every time instead of 2 Netrods. In the worst case they are order monkeys in the best case they stop rambo pieces with flash pulses. To give you feedback on your list: You have only very few specialists and all condensed in 2 slow (4-2) fire teams. Machaon is your only fast moving Specialist, which makes him prime target. Also he is the only gun platform in that fire team while Eudoros has no Specialist support. I would expect you to get the feeling of "Hm I'd really like to have this option on this side of the table without giving out 3 orders..." when playing this list. Here is a 15 Order Steel Phalanx List I'd play. Look at me! No Netrods! ────────────────────────────────────────────────── GROUP 1 10 1 AJAX 2 Combi Rifles, Nanopulser / AP Heavy Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 39) MACHAON Lieutenant Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, Eclipse Grenades / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 38) MYRMIDON Chain Rifle, Nanopulser, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 16) THRASYMEDES (Fireteam: Enomotarchos) Submachine gun, Light Rocket Launcher, Nanopulser, Stun Grenades / Pistol, Shock CCW. (0.5 | 30) THORAKITES (Forward Observer, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13) THORAKITES Paramedic (Medikit, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 14) EKDROMOS Chain Rifle, Nanopulser / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 20) THAMYRIS Hacker (Hacking Device) Pitcher, Nanopulser / Assault Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 24) LAMEDH Rebot Flash Pulse, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 8) AGÊMA Marksman Missile Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (1.5 | 27) GROUP 2 5 ALKÊ Spitfire, Nanopulser / Pistol, CCW. (1.5 | 25) THORAKITES Paramedic (Medikit, 360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 14) THORAKITES (360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 12) THORAKITES (360º Visor) Submachine gun, Chain Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 12) LAMEDH Rebot Flash Pulse, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 8) 4.5 SWC | 300 Points Open in Infinity Army Agema and Ekdromoi as active Turn pieces in the 10 Order group. Myrmidon Team as Frontbreakers. Thrasymedes to secure objectives and Alke as Flank Support. Thamyris as Supportware and ARO piece. Also useful against Tags
Actually I played this list pretty extensively and I got the feeling of "Holy sh*t this army really, really ROCKS!!!" Every. Single. Time. The Thora links are excellent flankers. Since I field one Thora link on both sides of the field and Machaon in the middle, my specialists are everywhere! Machaon is prime target whatever you do. My opponent is always doing his best to kill him. And surprised like hell to find out he was NOT my Lt!... With Machaon and especially Eudoros and Alke incoming my opponent rarely has the luxury of spending orders killing my Netrods. And if he does: Who cares? G2 is chaff. After taking casualities I can move the survivors into G1, or just put the Thoras in SF mode. (Very evil thing.) My heavy hitters always redirect enemy fire away from the (rather squishy) specialists. The Thoras are pressing for the objectives almost totally unmolested. Honestly I could go on and on and on just raving about this list, but enough is enough. Just one thing to add: this list is almost totally immune to infowar. (And Netrods are... Well... I never started crying when they get killed instead of, say a Thora.) When your opponent learns you will run SP (or Aleph) he will just loads on hackers to deal with the fairest of all heroes (whom I also run on a regular basis with his BFF) - and turns out spending a lot of points on ineffective troopers. Like the conversation! Good list, just not to my liking. Is all!
It absolutely depends on the mission. If its Supremacy or other kill heavy mission I might be inclined to play a list rather like yours. My local meta prefers rather Specialist heavy missions
In the best case, Lamedh are: REPEATERS!!!! Bring a Danavas to the game!!! That means 2-3 free spots where to place White Noise, or Supportware rambo dakinis Sniffer carriers: Deva Sensor ftw! Paparazzo: Best buddies with the warcor! Place an mk4 on top and enjoy either hunting enemy MSV with the White Noise or blinding everything that won't maneuver to "slice the pie" or spread the burst... Unless you rolled a 15 and failed, or a 13 and failed, in the Initiative roll. Well, after downing Machaon, taking Ajax or Alke is piece of cake :p
"New player looking for input on SP list" All models sans the warcor are not playable in the Steel Phalanx :)
But... but... Thrasimedes can hack... or Uahu if Soldiers of Fortune is available... And the Steel Phalanx has access (like all factions) to 17pts Specialists remotes that carry a sensor... And a Total Reaction can ARO too... /sniffff ;P
OK, you said about them in your last post, but not in this one. Please don't ignore the poor daleths, they need more love, they really deserve it.
Weell... they are in an odd position. The Triangulated Fire option they have (full order, combi shot of B3 at -3 ignoring all other modifiers) is great... for non-remote troops, for remote troops is a little less since the only use they get from Marksmanship 2 (Supportware) is the Shock effect. Their main use is that of fast specialists that can uncover enemy camos with ease, and they also carry repeaters (wich can be a liability, if the enemy has hacking supremacy and you have one or two isolated hackers), plus they can place sniffers too. If anything, they need a second profile for SP without the repeater (I have asked the same for Corregidor's Morans), not because of the points, but to protect one or two hackers (specially if those are Assault Hackers like the Myrmidon, since they can't really threaten enemy hackers like a normal or killer hacker can... a 27-28ps KHD Myrmidon would be great). In short: fast specialist (of the generic kind) who can move after the SP has mowed down some opposition to capture some critical points, but which need to be carefull to not endanger the hacker that allows for them to be aligned. If paired with Uahu or a mercenary KHD (Druze), that is easier to control (since they can go into IMP-2 and avoid being hacked to death while in marker state). For a "kill and advance", usually the Thorakitai can cover that second position Machaon can't with his Fireteam, but remember that the Myrmidon Officer (in a second Fireteam with Eudoros, for example) is another heavy pincer, so the Daleth's use is quite situational in the current Aleph meta.
Whoa! Thanks everyone for the great advice. It's not always pleasant to hear, but pride should never stand in the way of proper education. I'll work on a better list and post it very soon.
