Imperial Service, I need help with my Wu Ming!

Hello guys, the purpose of this thread is to discuss how to properly field ,and what tactics to employ, The Wu Ming.

All I've ever read about the Wu Ming and my experience with them always points out to, I'm not comfortable with this Fireteam, I usually do the box spread, i.e: HMG, Boarding shotty(FO or Deflector), Panzerfaust LSG, and Chain Rifle Submachine Gun

I too own the Heavy Rocket Launcher Wu Girl along with 1 of each available Zhanying Model, but alas I cannot get my head around how to properly use them or List Build for them.

That's why I turn to you, what missions do these guys shine in? What do you support them with?
Are they too SWC and Points Hungry? Am I playing them wrong??

Thank you for your time reading this, and even more if you reply!

I love them. Especially in Limited Insertion games. I always have them with Zhanying. Either with the Hacker or Madtraps depending on the mission. The Zhanying hacker is great with the Tinbot Wu Ming. the -6 to hack them also applies to the hacker! The mad traps are good for clearing mines or just keeping some things from getting too close to the link. I think for a heavy weapon, it's just personal preference. I tend to like the more dice of the HMG. But I will go HRL if I need to shave off points.

I've noticed the Combi Rifle+E/Mitter profile a lot in fireteam configuration as well as the Grenade launcher one.

Would you think of those profiles as "core" or necesary?

I don't have a wu ming team yet, but both those profiles seem pretty great! The grenade launcher can fire speculative shots from 8-16" and hit on 13! Nasty. And the combi+e/mitter has mines to help you hole up during the reactive round to get ready for the enemy counterattack.

Honestly, I think the LGL profile is the most useful, even without being in a Fireteam. The Multi+LGL has a tool for almost every target. AP or Shock ammo for 1W targets, DA for tougher things, and the grenades for clumps and speculative fire.

BS13 means that 8-16" he's hitting on 16s for everything, and can Speculative Fire those Grenades on 10s.

Wu Ming do great in missions where holding territory or murder is important, letting them leverage their wounds, BS, and durability.

That said it depends on how deep you want to invest in them. They have pretty solid profiles to run solo, letting you choose what range bands you want hitting power for.

The fireteam duo's are useful for delivering specialists or a little extra punch. Don't be too attached to keeping the fireteam. Both profiles are capable of going into suppression which is a pretty solid way to guard the FO once they reach the console. They also both have access to direct templates.

Once you start diving for full Pain Train your committing about half you list. You can choose to invest heavily SWC or not, just keep in mind you will have to rely on the fireteam's AROs for defense since you are already invested.

I tend to go full in SWC wise, utilizing the HRL as a long range ARO piece while reserving thr burst 5 HMG for active. The FO's flashpulse and combi's Emitter are particularly debilitating AROs.

I'm not to fond of the Panzerfaust since I will probably be SWC and points wise the CR/SMG and FO squeeze it.

The CR/SMG deserves special consideration as Pain Trains need cheap filler profiles to bulk out the team and Wu Ming have a good one. At 25 points, this profile brings a lot of versatile close range punch while bringing the overall cost of the team more in line with Domaru-Tanko and Riot GRRRLS than Mobile Brigada.

Considerations you need to keep in mind when you run the pain train:
LT - Have to leave room for one. CG are the cheapest, but squishiest. More badass Lts are an option but gulp points.

Specialists - Even with FO and Zhanying options, you'll need more. The Sophie usually gets top billing. Ninja KHD, FO remotes, Xi are solid choices as well.

Smoke/Optical mod counters - Smoke counters the pain train hard, so something to stop warbands helps. The much vaunted Rui Shi is a solid choice for the price if you can handle the requirements and SWC.

Orders - whether by remotes or Kuang Shi a pain train needs orders to do it's job.

Bypass Capability - The Pain Train is a brutish tool, but sometimes it runs into things that aren't worth tangling with. Smoke is a great tool to bypass things, though another model that infiltrates or ADs to get a better angle works too.

In my opinion the funny point of the Wu ming core is his cost. They are the only paint train that can be used in a its worth list of 15-16 orders. It's easy so say that Wu Mings work great in zone control missions, but with proper support ( kuang shis, rui shi , 3 celestial wards to hide leutinent and some ninja) they work pretty well to in light objective missions like supplies.

Speaking about composition of the fireteam, as the comarad said the zhanying is a must. The sensor+ madtraps are very usfull.

I usually pick the hmg one + the chain one ( not only for cheap, he is very usfull to protect the fireteam in short range) + the heavy rocket launcher ( the main ARO guy from the fireteam if you go first and you can move it to have good range)+ (and this is the strange spot ) foward observer shotgun or multi plus granades.

Ofc this is an a fully Wu Ming based list xD. For the duo i have 2 ways:

The hmg + chain is the strong hit team. It work in a 5-6 orders group two as a suport tool for ypur main carry ( Su Jian/ grulla core)

Shotgun observer + chain rifle: cheap rambo team. This team work is to walk fast to the enemy deploy zone. They are a bit "cheap" and expandable.

The granade launcher porfile and the e/mitter one look great but i never use them beacuse in the core ( out of limited incerscion ) every role is covered.

I've yet to use the Chain Rifle WM but he'd make a great replacement for Zhanying above. I just like the ZY for the sensor and madtraps.

Ok, I made a thing, I've yet to test it, but how do you guys like this one?

Where I play we always use the SPEC-OPS Minis, a weird meta maybe? but I could change Xi and the Spec Ops for a Sophie.

Lots of pain in that Train! I hope it works for you. Spec Ops are fun but dare to be different! I see that same combo of stuff all the time!

When the SpecOps first came out (back when Paradiso was released), they were very popular. I had some concerns about how they could plug the intentional design holes in a faction, but that generally didn't seem to be a problem. Some metas stopped using them later, others didn't.

I like them but almost always I see Doc/Eng Mimetisim or Doc/Hack Mimetisim. I'm hoping that in the future they put a limit on how many specialist options you can take or up the cost of them. But this is a totally different subject.

While off topic, I have heard XP will be split between two or three categories, and I think one of those categories is weapons, so it'll be hard to make a WIP 15 Docineer Hacker.
At least in so far as early stages of testing had come back when, so no guarantees they'll be remade any time soon or in this manner

    And back on topic.

Maybe you want to exploit speculative fire a little more, and use this (but this is rather an all or nothing type of list, and probably preaty unfriendly):

What you want to actually do with this list is to deliver the link team to the centre of the table and there use your 4 command tokens to rain coordinated speculative shots with 4 dice, and then reform your link. You also have a forward observer and biolocators to make your fire even more unfriendly.

Never played it, but toyed with the thought for long time. If any of you guys give it a try, please share your experiences.

The HMG should absolutely not sit out for ARO duty - it's too valuable to lose in the passive turn and is a beat stick in the active.

Taking the Zhanying Missile Launcher is an option, as is taking the Zhanying Hacker. In general though, if you take a zhanying it means you will lose your 5 man link bonus sooner than if you take the HRL as an ARO piece - often you can put that out to slow the enemy and force them to engage, then guts it prone when it takes a wound, leaving your link intact. The Zhanying Missile Launcher is cheaper and scary, but born to die in the first turn. Zhanying Madtraps would also be good, and brings some close quarter support to the team.

Rather than taking the tinbot, I would take a Ninja KHD to support this link. Infiltrate it along the route your Wu Ming plan to go and use it to kill any hackers threatening your link with repeaters.

For missions that need more specialists, taking two forward observers is a good plan.

Often I take a kuang shi link, hacker and Rui Shi along with something like this. The Rui Shi will often end up being my first turn attacker, with the Wu Ming moving out and engaging things after the MSV2 has dealt with several ARO pieces etc.

The saddest part of running Wu Ming is that you end up taking a celestial lt most of the time. They can hide and not get in trouble, but some games a rogue daturazi or krakot is going to grenade them and make you sad no matter where they hide out. You don't really have points for a pheasant or HI lt if you're running a strong Wu Ming link with a good order count of 15-16 orders.
